Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

By midmorning, word had gotten around the Citadel the way word always did — not through any formal announcement, but through the particular quality of silence that settled over a building full of people who’d learned to recognize when something serious had happened overnight.

Priya arrived first, patrol reports abandoned, expression carefully neutral in the way she got when she was already calculating contingencies. Malachar came next, Halvorsen a step behind him, both moving with the unhurried purpose of people who’d decided panic was a luxury they’d given up years ago. By the time Kael and Ren slipped in from the training yard, weapons left behind but posture still braced for one, Room 404 had gone from ”quiet apartment” to ”informal war room” without anyone officially deciding it should.

Wren sat curled on the couch with the tea golem parked beside him like a bodyguard built out of clay and stubbornness, saying nothing, listening to every word.

Ethan walked them through it — the beacon, the cut signal, the dawn warning, the wall that had opened on its own and addressed the system by a name nobody outside this room had ever used. He kept his voice level through all of it, mostly because someone in the room needed to, and mostly because getting loud about it wouldn’t make the wall any less mysterious or the entity any less unidentified.

”So we’ve got a fourth party,” Malachar said when he finished, arms crossed, voice flat in the particular way that meant he was thinking hard and not liking his own conclusions. ”One old enough to predate the Concord’s undefeated streak. One that can reach the system directly, which — correct me if I’m wrong — nothing has ever managed to do.”

[NOTICE: Nothing has ever managed to do. I would like that officially entered into whatever record Suresh is keeping, because I have spent three volumes being reachable by exactly one person and his increasingly complicated found family, and last night that changed without my consent.]

”And it’s looking for survivors,” Priya said. ”Actively. Has been, per its own words, longer than our network’s existed.”

Kaia, still working through corridor-stability data with the focus of someone who hadn’t really stopped since last night, didn’t look up. ”That’s the part that scares me most, honestly. Not the wall. Not the reach. The scale. If it’s been doing this since before our network existed, that’s not a side project. That’s a purpose. Something built or chose to spend that long finding people other Convergences erased.”

The room sat with that for a moment.

It was Suresh, unsurprisingly, who cut through the weight of it with the flattest possible question. ”So who do we ask? Because I refuse to believe the answer is ’nobody, we just wait for the mystery entity to text back when it feels like it.’”

Ethan actually huffed a short laugh at that, which felt strange given the circumstances, but strange in the correct, familiar way — the tension in the room easing half a degree the way it always did when Suresh said something practical enough to yank everyone back down to ground level.

”We ask the one source who’s supposed to have every network’s file,” Ethan said. ”The Authority.”

[NOTICE: I have already tried. Formally, through the correct channels, with the correct paperwork, because apparently even reaching out to a cosmic bureaucratic referee body requires paperwork now. No response yet.]

The kettle buzzed before anyone could comment on that.

Not the beacon pattern. Not the cold OBSERVATION formatting. Something new — clean, formatted, precise in a way that felt distinctly official, the digital equivalent of someone clearing their throat before a scheduled meeting.

[WATCHER RECORD: Acknowledging your inquiry. Apologies for the delay — verification protocols required additional time given the nature of what you’re asking about.]

Everyone in the room went still. Ethan recognized the tag immediately — the neutral procedural observer the system had first flagged back around Chapter 189, the one that reported upward to the Convergence Authority and had, so far, been more honest than anyone strictly needed it to be.

”You know what we’re asking about,” Ethan said, careful.

[WATCHER RECORD: I am aware of the contact you received. I was aware within minutes of it occurring. I did not reach out immediately because I needed to confirm, through my own channels, exactly how much I am permitted to tell you.

[WATCHER RECORD: The answer, unfortunately, is: less than I would like.]

[NOTICE: That is already a more honest opening line than most of the exposition I get handed in this story, so credit where due.]

Ethan almost smiled despite himself. ”Start with what you can tell us, then.”

[WATCHER RECORD: The entity that contacted you is real, is old, and is known to the Convergence Authority. It does not have a formal designation in the public registry, but it exists in restricted files — files that predate the Authority’s current oversight structure, going back further than any active Convergence record I have direct access to.

[WATCHER RECORD: Internally, in the oldest surviving documentation, it is referred to only as the Unlisted. Not a name. A classification. Something the Authority chose not to formally acknowledge, generations ago, rather than something that chose not to be acknowledged.]

That landed heavier than Ethan expected. Not we don’t know what it is.We decided not to know what it is.

”Why,” he said. ”Why bury a file on something that’s apparently been finding survivors of destroyed networks longer than the Authority’s had a current structure to oversee anything.”

The pause that followed was longer than the Watcher’s usual cadence — long enough that Ethan wondered, not for the first time, whether even a neutral procedural entity felt something close to discomfort when a question landed somewhere it wasn’t supposed to.

[WATCHER RECORD: Because the Unlisted’s existence raises a question the Authority has never wanted answered publicly: if something has been quietly recovering survivors from ”resolved” Convergences for this long — survivors the Authority’s own records list as fully absorbed, fully accounted for, fully closed —

[WATCHER RECORD: then how many of those closed cases were never actually closed at all.]

Wren made a small sound from the couch. Ethan didn’t turn to look, not right away, because looking would have made it a spectacle, and the kid deserved better than being stared at while the ground shifted under a word he’d spent Chapters refusing to fully hear — closed. His home. Filed, apparently, as closed, by an institution that might have been wrong.

That was the answer this Chapter needed — not everything, not close to everything, but the real one underneath the mystery: the Authority hadn’t hidden the file out of malice or strategy. It had hidden it because the Unlisted’s existence was an accusation. Proof, potentially, that the Authority’s own record of ”who survives a Convergence and who doesn’t” was less final, and less accurate, than every network operating under its rules had been led to believe.

[NOTICE: I would like a moment to be furious about that on Wren’s behalf, if nobody minds.]

[WATCHER RECORD: You are entitled to that. For what it’s worth — and I recognize it is not worth much — I do not believe the Authority acted with cruelty. I believe it acted the way most large, procedural institutions do when confronted with evidence their own foundation might be flawed. It filed the inconvenient thing away and hoped it would stay filed.

[WATCHER RECORD: It did not count on the Unlisted reaching out to you directly. That has never happened before, as far as my access extends. Which means one of two things is true.]

”Which are,” Ethan pressed.

[WATCHER RECORD: Either the Unlisted has decided your network is significant enough to break a pattern it has held for longer than recorded history —

[WATCHER RECORD: Or something has changed, recently, that made reaching out necessary. And given the timing — given that your network is currently drifting toward a Convergence with the one undefeated power in three prior events —

[WATCHER RECORD: I do not think that timing is a coincidence. I think the Unlisted is watching the Concord too. And I think it does not like what it is seeing.]

The room went cold in a way that had nothing to do with the temperature.

That was the second open thread — not resolved, not even close, just laid bare with the kind of clarity that made everyone in the room recalculate exactly how large this was actually getting. An ancient, unlisted, deliberately-buried entity, old enough to predate the Authority’s current structure, quietly rescuing survivors from Convergences the official record called finished — and it had just chosen, for the first time anyone could document, to make direct contact. Not with the Authority. Not with the Concord.

With them.

”What is it seeing,” Priya asked quietly, ”that made it decide we were worth the risk.”

The Watcher’s reply, when it came, carried none of its usual careful neutrality — just something close, for the first time, to genuine unease.

[WATCHER RECORD: I don’t know. But I intercepted a fragment of corridor traffic forty minutes ago that I was not authorized to intercept, from a boundary sector closer to the Cleansing Concord’s approach vector than anything should be moving yet.

[WATCHER RECORD: A single line, unformatted, untagged, almost like it wasn’t meant to be sent at all — just leaked.

[WATCHER RECORD: It said: ”They heard the Unlisted’s voice. Tell the Vanguard to move the timeline up.”]

Nobody in the room breathed for a second.

[WATCHER RECORD: Ethan — I don’t yet know who or what a ”Vanguard” is within Concord structure. I don’t know how far up their timeline just moved, or by how much.

[WATCHER RECORD: I only know that whatever you triggered last night by answering that beacon —

[WATCHER RECORD: the other side noticed too. And they are no longer waiting.]
