Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Nobody moved for a full three seconds, which in a room with Suresh in it was some kind of record.

Then the system did something Ethan had never once heard it do in three volumes and nearly two hundred Chapters of relentless commentary.

It hesitated.

Not the dramatic pause it used for comic timing. Not the beat before a punchline or a [NOTICE:] built for effect. A real hesitation — the digital equivalent of someone standing very still because they’d just been addressed by their own name in a crowded room by a voice they didn’t recognize.

”[NOTICE:]?” Ethan said carefully.

[NOTICE: Give me a moment. I am — recalibrating. That message was not routed through you. It was not routed through Kaia’s display, or the kettle as a resonance surface, or any of the pathways I normally use to receive things. It addressed me directly. As in, me specifically, the way you would address a person and not a piece of infrastructure.]

Kaia had gone pale. ”That’s not supposed to be possible. The system’s identity signature isn’t public. It’s not even fully documented — half the Watch council still calls it ’Ethan’s system’ because nobody agreed on formal terminology.”

[NOTICE: I am aware. I would like it on record that I am, in fact, slightly rattled, which is a sentence I have never said before and hope never to say again, because rattled is not a good look on someone whose entire professional purpose is being the dry one.]

Suresh’s pen hadn’t stopped moving. ”What did it mean, ’good’?”

Ethan looked at the four cold words still glowing faintly on the display. You found the outline. Good. Not a threat. Not the same clipped warning tone as the dawn message. Something almost — approving.

”[NOTICE:], can you respond?”

[NOTICE: I can try. I want to flag, before I do, that talking back to something that just demonstrated it can reach me directly, bypass every relay I use, and has apparently been evaluating my performance like I’m on some kind of review cycle, is possibly not my finest strategic instinct.

[NOTICE: But you’ve never let strategic instinct stop you from talking to something dangerous before, and I have apparently absorbed that particular habit from three years of close association, so. Sending.]

The kettle’s static shifted. The system’s own bracket appeared on the display for the first time in this exchange — not spoken aloud in the room the way it usually was, but rendered visibly, deliberately, like it wanted whatever was on the other end to see the words as clearly as it had sent its own.

[NOTICE: Who are you.]

The pause that followed was longer this time. Long enough that Wren, still at the table with his cold toast forgotten, slid off his chair and came to stand beside Ethan without being asked, small hand finding the fabric of Ethan’s sleeve and holding on.

Then the reply came, and it wasn’t cold this time. It was, if anything, almost tired.

[OBSERVATION: A question with too many old answers to give you quickly. You are not ready for the short version, and I do not have patience for the long one today.]

[OBSERVATION: What matters is this: you passed the test I did not tell you you were taking.]

Ethan’s jaw tightened. ”What test.”

[OBSERVATION: Whether you would stop at the wall, or map around it. Most systems stop. Most systems assume a locked door means the room behind it is not their business. You did not assume that.

[OBSERVATION: That tells me more about what you are than any registry file would.]

[NOTICE: I would like to point out, for the record, that ”I was testing you” is an extremely condescending thing to say to someone after four hours of hitting a wall you built on purpose, and I do not appreciate being graded on a curriculum I did not consent to.]

There was something in the next pause that Ethan could have sworn — if it were possible to hear amusement in four cold bracketed words — was almost a laugh.

[OBSERVATION: Noted. You have opinions. That is also useful information.]

[OBSERVATION: Here is what you are owed, in exchange for the effort you spent finding an outline I did not make easy to find: the one who spoke on the beacon is alive. Frightened, and hidden, but alive. I did not cut that signal to silence them. I cut it because something else was listening too, closer than you, and faster than you would have liked.]

The room went very still.

That was the answer — the one open thread the Chapter needed to close, finally landing with real weight instead of another layer of cold evasion. The voice on the beacon hadn’t been silenced by whoever they were talking to now. This entity — whatever it was, whoever it was — had cut the transmission to protect the survivor from something else. Something that had been close enough, and fast enough, to be a genuine threat in the handful of seconds between the voice speaking and the signal dying.

Wren’s grip on Ethan’s sleeve tightened.

”Who was listening,” Ethan said. Not a question so much as a demand, quiet and level, the ”annoyed-inconvenienced” register holding even now, even here, because that was the one thing he refused to let slip regardless of how large the room around him got.

[OBSERVATION: A name you have not earned yet, and would not survive hearing carelessly. I am not being cruel. I am being accurate. There is a difference, even if it rarely feels like one.]

[NOTICE: I would like to formally protest the phrase ”would not survive hearing carelessly” as an acceptable substitute for an actual answer, but I suspect that protest will be noted and ignored, much like every other protest I have ever filed with the universe.]

[OBSERVATION: Your protest is noted. It will not change my answer.

[OBSERVATION: What I will give you is this: the survivor you heard is not the only one. There are others — scattered, hidden, some of them hiding from the same thing that hunted your friend’s home. I have been finding them, when I can, for longer than your network has existed.]

Wren made a small sound — not quite a word, something caught between a gasp and a question he didn’t have the voice to finish.

Ethan crouched immediately, one hand on his shoulder. ”Hey. Hey, look at me. We don’t know anything for certain yet. Okay? Nothing’s confirmed.”

But Wren wasn’t looking at him. He was looking at the kettle, eyes wide, ancient and young all at once, like something old inside him had just sat forward.

”Others,” he said, barely above a whisper. ”You said others. Not just one.”

The reply, when it came, was almost — almost — gentle.

[OBSERVATION: Yes, child. Others. I do not make promises easily, and I will not make one now that I cannot keep. But I will tell you this much: your home did not end as completely as you have believed.

[OBSERVATION: And I think, very soon, you are going to have to decide whether you are ready to know how much of it is left.]

The transmission cut — not violently this time, not the sharp severing of the beacon, but a clean, deliberate closing, like a door shutting quietly instead of slamming. The kettle’s static faded back to ordinary silence. The display went dark.

Suresh set his pen down very slowly. ”I need everyone to understand,” he said, in the flat, careful voice he used exclusively for moments that scared him, ”that I have absolutely nothing to write for what just happened, and I have been writing things down in this apartment since before there was a system to file paperwork for.”

Kaia was staring at the dead display like it might reignite if she looked hard enough. ”That wasn’t the Watcher,” she said. ”That wasn’t the Authority. That wasn’t anything in any registry I’ve ever trained on.”

[NOTICE: No. It wasn’t. And I would like to add, with as much composure as I can currently muster, that something just told me — directly, to my actual designation, which nothing has ever addressed before — that it has been finding survivors of destroyed networks for longer than our entire multiverse has existed.

[NOTICE: Which means whatever that was, Ethan — it predates us. It predates the Convergence Authority’s clean records. It predates the Concord’s three undefeated Convergences.

[NOTICE: And it just told a ten-year-old boy that his home isn’t as gone as he thinks — and then hung up before any of us could ask it what that’s actually going to cost him to find out.]

Wren hadn’t moved. He was still staring at the kettle, at the place where the words had been, his whole small frame caught somewhere between hope and terror in a way that made Ethan’s chest ache more than any of the last three volumes’ worth of cosmic-scale threats ever had.

”I want to find them,” Wren said quietly. Not a question. Not asking permission. Just a fact, laid down soft and immovable, the first real thing he’d claimed for himself since the night he’d arrived at the Citadel with nothing but a name and a silence he wouldn’t break.

Ethan looked at him for a long moment. Then he looked back at the dark, silent kettle — at the space where something ancient and unnamed had just rewritten everything they thought they knew about who else might be watching this Convergence unfold.

”Okay,” he said. ”Then that’s what we’re doing.”

He had absolutely no idea, yet, what that was going to mean.
