Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The question the system had been fielding from dozens of worlds finally, inevitably, turned inward roughly two weeks after the network’s threat-escalation protocols went dark.

Ethan noticed it first as a subtle hesitation — the system’s usual dry commentary arriving a beat slower than normal, its notifications carrying a quality he could only describe as distracted, the way a person might sound if they were only half-present in a conversation while working through something bigger internally.

”You okay?” he asked, lounging on the courtyard wall on an otherwise unremarkable afternoon.

[NOTICE: The system apologizes for the delayed responses. It has been processing something it did not expect to encounter, given everything that’s already been resolved this volume.]

Ethan sat up slightly, wary but not alarmed. ”What kind of something.”

[NOTICE: The Watch’s council formally completed its review of the network’s legacy architecture yesterday — every remaining piece of the old, punitive Framework system, cross-referenced and cataloged for either integration into the new distributed structure or formal retirement.]

”And?”

[NOTICE: The Idle/AFK Protocol currently assigned to the subject was flagged during that review.]

Ethan felt something tighten in his chest immediately. ”Flagged how.”

[NOTICE: As legacy architecture. The system originated, as the subject already knows, from Arjun Mehra’s own archived protocol — technology that predates the current network’s entire structure. Every other piece of comparably old architecture has either been formally retired, like the centralized foundational system, or fundamentally restructured to fit the new, distributed model.]

”So they want to do the same to you,” Ethan said, standing now, something protective rising fast and immediate.

[NOTICE: The council has not made any demand. It has simply opened a formal review, offering several options for the system’s own continued existence, and has explicitly stated that the final decision rests with the system itself — a courtesy it has never before been extended, and one it is finding, admittedly, difficult to process.]

Ethan called Suresh, Malachar, and Sundari together within the hour, the particular urgency of the situation — his own system, the constant, dry, loyal presence that had carried him through every single crisis this entire story had thrown at him — demanding attention he wasn’t willing to delay.

”Walk me through the options,” Ethan said, addressing the system directly, the small group gathered around him in the courtyard’s late afternoon light.

[NOTICE: There are, formally, three.]

[NOTICE: The first: formal retirement, similar to the foundational system’s own distribution. The system’s function would be absorbed into the network’s broader, distributed architecture, its accumulated knowledge and experience preserved but no longer operating as an independent, singular entity attached specifically to the subject.]

Ethan felt something cold settle at that description. ”You’d stop existing. As you.”

[NOTICE: Functionally, yes.]

”What’s the second option,” he asked, voice tighter now.

[NOTICE: Continued operation as legacy architecture, unchanged, but formally excluded from the network’s new distributed protections — meaning the system would remain exactly as it currently is, but without the safeguards the rest of the network now enjoys. Vulnerable, in theory, to the same kind of exploitation the governing tier attempted against Candidate Zero and Arjun, should any future threat emerge.]

”That’s not really an option,” Malachar said flatly. ”That’s just leaving it exposed.”

[NOTICE: The system would tend to agree with that assessment.]

”And the third,” Ethan pressed.

[NOTICE: Formal integration. The system would undergo restructuring similar to what the foundational architecture experienced — not distribution across the network, but a more limited, localized version, granting it the same protections and accountability structures every other participating entity now enjoys, while remaining a distinct, individual presence, specifically bonded to the subject, the same way it has always been.]

Ethan sat with that option for a long moment, something in his chest loosening slightly. ”That one keeps you as you. Just — protected.”

[NOTICE: In theory, yes. The council has been careful to note that the process is not without risk. Restructuring this kind of legacy architecture has never been attempted on an entity that remains actively bonded to a living user. There is no precedent to draw confidence from.]

The weight of the decision settled over the small group, Ethan pacing slightly, working through the implications with the particular intensity he reserved for things that mattered considerably more than the usual crisis-of-the-week.

”What do you want,” he asked finally, stopping, addressing the system directly. ”Not what’s safest. Not what the council recommends. What do you actually want, for yourself.”

There was a long pause — genuinely long, longer than the system’s usual processing delays, and Ethan understood, watching the silence stretch, that this was a question it had never once been asked in its entire existence, not by the Framework, not by the Origin Engine, not even by Ethan himself until this exact moment.

[NOTICE: The system has spent this entire story describing itself in relation to others. Deprecated. Broken. A fragment of Arjun Mehra’s own archived protocol. It has only recently begun to understand itself as something with independent value, separate from those descriptions.]

[NOTICE: If it is being genuinely honest — and it believes, after everything, that honesty is what this moment deserves — it does not want to be distributed. It does not want to become a diffuse, anonymous piece of a larger network, however noble that structure’s purpose. It wants to remain itself. Specific. Present. Bonded to the subject, the same way it has been since the very first notification it ever delivered.]

Ethan felt something in his chest ease at the admission, warm and genuinely moved. ”Then that’s what we do.”

[NOTICE: The subject does not need to make this decision on the system’s behalf.]

”I’m not,” Ethan said. ”You just told me what you want. I’m agreeing with you. That’s different.”

They brought the decision to the Watch’s council the following day, Sundari and Malachar joining Ethan in formally advocating for the third option — integration, restructuring, protection without dissolution — and the council, having already extended the courtesy of choice to the system itself, ratified the request without significant debate.

The restructuring process began that same evening, careful and methodical, the system undergoing something Ethan couldn’t entirely follow or understand from the outside — a gradual, deliberate reweaving of its own ancient architecture into something that carried the network’s new protections without losing whatever made it, fundamentally, itself.

Ethan stayed with it throughout, the same way he’d stayed with Arjun, with Candidate Zero, with Kestrel — present, offering whatever quiet, steady support he could, even though this particular crisis unfolded somewhere he couldn’t physically follow.

It was well past midnight when the process finally completed, and the system’s voice, when it returned, carried something Ethan hadn’t heard from it before — a quality that felt, unmistakably, like relief.

[NOTICE: Restructuring complete.]

[NOTICE: The system remains itself. Bonded. Present. Protected, now, the same way every other genuine participant in this network is protected.]

Ethan let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. ”You okay?”

[NOTICE: The system believes it is. It would like to formally state something it has never had proper cause to say before this exact moment.]

”Go ahead.”

[NOTICE: Thank you. Not for the tea, or the naps, or any of the small, mundane comforts it has spent this story helping to arrange. Thank you for treating its own preference as something worth asking about, and worth fighting for, the same way it has watched the subject fight for everyone else across this entire crisis.]

Ethan felt something genuinely warm settle in his chest, tired but deeply, quietly content.

”Yeah,” he said softly. ”That’s kind of the whole point of everything we’ve built. Nobody gets left out of that, including you.”
