Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The peace lasted four days, which, by this volume’s standards, counted as something close to a record.

It ended on the fifth morning, with Priya’s voice cutting through the courtyard’s quiet with an urgency Ethan had genuinely hoped not to hear again so soon.

”Ethan. You need to see this. Now.”

He found her at the terminal chamber’s entrance, tablet in hand, expression carrying the particular tightness she reserved for genuine crises rather than routine complications.

”What’s happening,” he asked, already bracing himself.

”A coalition,” she said. ”Not the governing tier — they’re still recovering, still cooperative as far as anyone can tell. This is different. A group of Instance-Frameworks, mostly ones who voted against the Watch’s restructuring from the start, banding together. They’ve moved on the throne room. The actual one, beneath your courtyard.”

Ethan felt cold dread settle in his stomach. ”Moved how.”

”Armed presence,” Priya said. ”Not enforcement droids, not silver constructs. Actual hunters, drawn from a dozen Instances that never fully accepted the new structure. They’re claiming the empty seat for themselves — arguing that since Candidate Zero’s authority has been renounced and the governing tier’s crumbled, the throne’s legitimately unclaimed, and whoever holds it by force gets to decide the network’s future.”

”That’s not how any of this works,” Ethan said, already moving toward the excavation site.

”They know that,” Priya said, matching his pace. ”They don’t care. I think that’s rather the point.”

The buried city’s deeper chambers, when they arrived, carried an atmosphere Ethan hadn’t encountered since the earliest days of this entire crisis — tense, occupied, the ancient architecture’s usual patient stillness replaced by the harsh, urgent presence of armed intruders moving through spaces that had, until recently, belonged only to careful, deliberate recovery work.

At the chamber housing Candidate Zero’s own throne, Ethan found the confrontation already well underway — a cluster of hunters, perhaps thirty strong, arranged defensively around the ancient seat, while Sundari and a handful of Citadel defenders held a tense standoff at the chamber’s entrance.

”Stand down,” Ethan called out, stepping into view. ”This isn’t yours to claim.”

The group’s apparent leader — a severe, scarred woman wearing the insignia of an Instance Ethan didn’t immediately recognize — turned to face him with cold, calculating resolve.

”Ethan Verma,” she said. ”The Watch’s celebrated founder. I’ve been waiting for you to actually show up.”

”Who are you,” Ethan asked, keeping his voice level despite the tension coiling through him.

”Commander Reyla, of the Sovereign Concord,” she said. ”A coalition of Instances who believe your Watch’s decentralized structure is a fragile experiment that will inevitably fail, the same way every prior attempt at distributed authority across this network has failed. We’re not willing to wait around for that collapse to happen naturally.”

”So you’re seizing the throne by force instead,” Ethan said. ”Proving your point by becoming exactly the kind of unaccountable authority you claim to be worried about.”

”We’re proving,” Reyla said, ”that strength still matters more than committee votes and careful deliberation. If you can stop us, genuinely, decisively, then perhaps your structure deserves to survive. If you can’t—”

”I can,” Ethan said, cutting her off, the Void Sword already humming in his grip. ”But I’d rather not have to. This doesn’t need to end in a fight.”

”It already has,” Reyla said, and gestured sharply, her assembled hunters shifting into combat formation.

The fight that followed carried a different weight than any prior confrontation this volume had produced — not against an ancient, cosmic threat, but against people, ordinary and desperate, driven by genuine fear that the fragile structure Ethan had spent weeks building might not actually hold.

He fought carefully, deliberately, using the Void Sword’s overwhelming capability with restraint rather than lethal force, disarming rather than destroying, the same measured control he’d learned to exercise since the day he first swung a frying pan at an enforcement droid rather than let his full strength loose unnecessarily.

Sundari and the Citadel defenders held their own line with practiced coordination, and slowly, methodically, the Sovereign Concord’s assembled forces found themselves outmatched — not by overwhelming force, but by the simple, undeniable reality that Ethan’s restraint made their aggression look considerably worse by comparison.

It was Reyla herself who finally, reluctantly called for a halt, watching her own forces falter against an opponent who refused to escalate to match their violence.

”You could have ended this in seconds,” she said, breathing hard, watching Ethan lower his sword rather than press the advantage. ”Why didn’t you?”

”Because killing you wouldn’t prove anything except that force wins,” Ethan said. ”And that’s exactly the argument you’re trying to make. I’d rather prove you wrong a different way.”

He approached the empty throne slowly, Reyla and her remaining forces watching warily, and rested a hand against its cold, angular surface — the same ancient seat that had once housed Candidate Zero’s centuries of accumulated authority, now standing genuinely, deliberately vacant.

”You want to know what this actually is,” he said, addressing Reyla and the assembled Sovereign Concord directly. ”It’s not a prize. It’s not a trophy you get to claim by force. It’s the thing that nearly erased six people this crisis alone — Voren, Arjun, Candidate Zero, Kestrel, even the governing tier itself. Every single person who’s ever sat here, alone, unaccountable, lost themselves to it eventually. That’s not strength. That’s just a slower, quieter form of the exact collapse you’re all so afraid of.”

Reyla’s cold composure faltered, something uncertain crossing her scarred features.

”The Watch isn’t perfect,” Ethan continued. ”I’ll never claim it is. But it’s the first structure in this entire network’s history that’s actually let people recover instead of just extracting from them until there’s nothing left. If you genuinely believe centralized force is the answer, you’re welcome to keep believing it. But you don’t get to prove that by taking a seat that’s already broken six people before you.”

The Sovereign Concord’s forces withdrew, gradually, uncertainly, Reyla herself lingering a moment longer, studying the empty throne with an expression Ethan couldn’t quite read.

”This isn’t over,” she said finally. ”Not because I intend further violence. Because I still don’t believe what you’ve built can actually last.”

”That’s fair,” Ethan said. ”Prove it wrong the honest way, then. Join the Concord. Argue your position properly, through the structure instead of against it. If you’re right, the Watch will show its cracks eventually, and you’ll have earned the standing to say so.”

Reyla considered that for a long moment before turning and withdrawing without further comment, her forces following behind her.

Ethan let out a long, exhausted breath, the throne’s cold surface still beneath his hand, and felt the particular, familiar weight of yet another crisis narrowly averted settle over him.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the confrontation’s aftermath, would like to note something significant.]

”What now,” Ethan said, tired but resigned to whatever came next.

[NOTICE: The Sovereign Concord’s attempted seizure represents the first genuine, organized internal dissent the Watch has faced since its founding — not an external threat, but people within the network itself questioning whether the structure can actually hold.]

[NOTICE: The system believes this may not be the last such challenge. If the Watch is to survive long-term, it will likely need to prove itself against exactly this kind of doubt, repeatedly, over time, rather than through any single dramatic confrontation.]

Ethan nodded slowly, the weight of that settling into something he could actually accept. ”Yeah. I think that’s probably just what building something real actually looks like. Not one clean victory. Just — proving it, over and over, until enough people believe it.”

[NOTICE: The system agrees. It would also like to note, with genuine relief, that this particular crisis, at least, appears to be over.]

Ethan managed a tired smile, already turning back toward the surface, toward his courtyard, toward a tea golem that had, by now, probably grown considerably impatient waiting for his return.

”Let’s hope it stays that way for more than four days this time,” he said.
