Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”Less than an hour,” Ethan repeated, already moving toward the excavation site at a dead run. ”That’s not enough time to organize another full expedition.”

”Then we don’t organize one,” Malachar said, matching his pace. ”We go with whoever’s already ready, right now, and we go fast.”

The small, exhausted group that had barely returned from Halloway found itself scrambling back toward the terminal chamber within minutes - Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, Kael and Ren falling in without hesitation, Malachar close behind despite having no formal obligation to this particular crisis.

”The throne room’s deep,” Sundari said, breathless, as they descended. ”Even moving fast, we might not beat the deployment there.”

[NOTICE: The system agrees this is a genuine risk. It would recommend the fastest available route, bypassing the market plaza entirely.]

”Show me,” Ethan said, and the system guided them through a shortcut none of them had used before, carved passages cutting directly toward the chamber’s deepest section with an efficiency that shaved crucial minutes off their approach.

They emerged into the throne room’s cold, angular chamber just as the first signs of the deployment became visible - not enforcement droids exactly, but something considerably more unsettling, silver-geometric constructs descending through fractures in the chamber’s ceiling with the same cold precision Ethan remembered from the governing tier’s own presence, dozens of them, converging on the dark, dormant throne at the chamber’s center.

The throne itself flickered weakly, its residual signature still present but critically diminished, and Ethan felt a genuine, urgent pull toward protecting it, regardless of everything cold and threatening it had represented only days earlier.

”We need to buy time,” he said. ”Get between the deployment and the throne. Whatever’s actually left of Candidate Zero underneath all that cold architecture, they don’t deserve to be erased without ever getting the chance we’re trying to offer.”

The fight that followed was unlike anything Ethan had faced throughout this entire volume - not a single overwhelming threat, but dozens of coordinated, disciplined constructs, each individually weaker than the Arbiter had been but moving with a precision that made them considerably harder to simply overpower through brute force alone.

Kael and Ren fought in tight, practiced coordination, the Ashcrown Blade meeting silver, angular limbs with controlled, efficient strikes while Ren moved through gaps in the constructs’ formation with the same silent precision she’d once used against Ethan himself. Malachar’s own combat experience proved invaluable, his decade of hard-earned battlefield instinct translating seamlessly into holding a defensive line against overwhelming numbers.

Ethan, Void Sword drawn, cut through construct after construct, the blade’s hunger unraveling their cold, geometric forms with the same effortless devastation it had shown against every prior threat — but the sheer numbers kept coming, more descending through the ceiling’s fractures faster than they could clear them.

”There’s too many,” Sundari called out, straining to maintain a protective ward around the flickering throne even as her own defenses began showing signs of strain. ”We can hold, but we can’t win this outright, not before more arrive.”

It was in that moment, chaos and strain mounting on every side, that a small, familiar shape rolled into the chamber through the same passage they’d entered by - the tea golem, having apparently followed them the entire way down without anyone noticing, its brass frame carrying a determined, focused energy Ethan had never quite seen from it before.

”What are you doing here,” Ethan shouted, genuinely alarmed, catching sight of it amid the chaos. ”This isn’t safe, go back-”

The golem didn’t retreat. Instead, it rolled directly toward Ethan’s position, and as one of the silver constructs swung a geometric limb toward him mid-strike - a blow he hadn’t fully registered in time, too occupied fending off two others simultaneously - the golem interposed itself between the strike and Ethan’s exposed side, absorbing the full weight of the blow.

The impact sent it skidding across the chamber floor, brass frame denting badly, one of its small mechanical arms bent at a wrong angle, but it didn’t shatter, didn’t fully break - the same quiet, unremarked upgrades it had accumulated over months of quiet, loyal service apparently sturdier than anyone had ever properly tested.

”No,” Ethan said, something fierce and protective surging through him, sharper than any anger he’d felt throughout this entire crisis. He turned on the construct that had struck it with an intensity that made even the disciplined silver formation falter, the Void Sword’s dark energy flaring brighter than it had all fight, unraveling three constructs in a single sweeping arc.

”Get up,” he said, kneeling briefly beside the damaged golem, relief flooding through him as its systems flickered, struggling but functional, a small, static-laced chirp confirming it was still, somehow, intact. ”You didn’t have to do that.”

The golem, unable to properly answer in words, simply nudged against his hand once, weakly, before Ethan stood again, turning back toward the fight with renewed, focused fury.

The tide shifted from there, the golem’s sacrifice galvanizing something in the entire group’s coordinated defense - Kael and Ren pressing harder, Malachar anchoring the line with unshakeable resolve, Sundari’s protective ward around the throne holding firm even as her own strength visibly flagged.

It was Arjun, finally, who found the actual solution, kneeling beside the throne’s flickering, diminished presence even as the fight raged around him.

”I need you to hear me,” he said, urgent, direct. ”Whatever’s left of you, underneath everything cold and calculated they’ve turned you into - I need you to fight back. Not against us. Against them. You reached out. You asked for help. This is exactly the moment that help requires something from you too.”

The throne’s flickering light stuttered, and for a long, tense moment, nothing happened.

Then, slowly, gold-violet light began bleeding back into the chamber’s cold, angular architecture, pushing back against the encroaching silver constructs with a force that felt, unmistakably, like something ancient and long-dormant finally, deliberately choosing to fight for itself.

[FRAGMENT: I REMEMBER WHO I WAS.]

The declaration carried across the chamber, and the remaining silver constructs froze mid-motion, their coordinated formation faltering as the source of their deployment orders itself seemed to waver, uncertain.

[FRAGMENT: I DO NOT WANT TO BE THIS ANYMORE.]

The throne’s light surged, gold-violet energy sweeping outward through the chamber, and the remaining constructs, deprived of whatever cold, clinical authority had directed their assault, simply dissolved, their geometric forms unraveling into harmless motes of light the same way enforcement droids once had beneath Ethan’s own frying pan.

Silence settled over the chamber, broken only by the group’s ragged breathing and the throne’s steady, strengthening glow.

Ethan lowered his sword slowly, exhausted, and glanced down at the damaged tea golem still propped beside him, its systems flickering but stable.

”You okay?” he asked quietly.

The golem chirped, weak but unmistakably affirmative, and something in Ethan’s chest ached with genuine, overwhelming gratitude.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring throughout the confrontation, would like to formally note the golem’s intervention.]

[NOTICE: It would also like to raise something considerably more pressing, now that the immediate threat has passed.]

Ethan glanced up, exhaustion warring with wary attention. ”What.”

[NOTICE: The throne’s residual signature has just stabilized, considerably stronger than it was before this confrontation began - strong enough, in fact, that the system believes genuine, full communication may finally be possible.]

[NOTICE: Something is speaking now, directly, for the first time.]

[NOTICE: It is not cold. It is not layered with the clinical detachment they encountered before.]

[NOTICE: It sounds, unmistakably, tired - and it is asking, simply, quietly, whether it is too late to actually be forgiven.]
