Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”The original template,” Ethan repeated, exhaustion warring against the fresh, staggering weight of this new revelation. ”You’re telling me there’s a first world. Before Arjun’s Instance, before mine, before Candidate Zero even accepted the seat. The actual blueprint everything else was copied from.”

[NOTICE: That is the system’s current understanding, yes. Candidate Zero’s earliest archived memories reference it only briefly, buried so deep the system nearly missed the connection entirely.]

Candidate Zero’s presence, still recovering but attentive, spoke into the tense silence. ”I remember now. Fragments, the same way Arjun recovered his own memories during the containment attempt. Before I accepted the seat, before any of this network existed in its current form, there was a single world — the first true Instance, seeded not as an experiment but as the actual origin point of everything that followed. I believe I visited it once, centuries ago, before I understood what accepting the seat would eventually cost me.”

”And the governing tier’s redirecting the Reset there,” Sundari said. ”Not to erase the network’s recent growth. To erase the actual source everything else was built from.”

”If that template is destroyed,” Arjun said slowly, working through the implications with visible dread, ”I don’t think this only affects one world. Every Instance modeled after it — which, based on what Candidate Zero just said, might mean every Instance across the entire network — could lose whatever foundational structure they were originally built upon. Not just reverted. Unmade, at the root.”

The weight of that settled over the exhausted group with staggering, immediate clarity.

”We need to get there,” Ethan said, already forcing himself upright despite the accumulated exhaustion of the day’s confrontation. ”Now, before they finish redirecting the Reset.”

[NOTICE: The system would caution against immediate action without proper support. The subject has already expended considerable strength defending the foundational architecture and stabilizing Kestrel. Rushing into another confrontation, alone or with a small, exhausted group, risks repeating the exact mistake this entire crisis has taught against.]

”I know,” Ethan said, frustration and urgency warring in his voice. ”But we don’t have time to organize a full expedition the way we did for Halloway. If they’re already redirecting the Reset—”

”Then we call the Watch,” Priya’s voice cut through, having descended partway into the chamber during the fight’s aftermath, having witnessed enough to understand the stakes immediately. ”Properly. Not a small, exhausted strike team. The actual structure you’ve spent weeks building, put to use exactly the way it was designed to be.”

Ethan looked at her, something settling in his exhausted chest at the reminder. ”You’re right. I keep forgetting the lesson I already learned.”

The emergency summons went out within minutes, the Watch’s newly established, distributed communication structure — built specifically to coordinate rapid, collective response across the network’s many Instances — activating for the first time at genuine, full scale.

The response was immediate and, considering everything the past month had built, genuinely staggering in its scope. Malachar and Halvorsen mobilized Instance-9’s own considerable combat resources. Kaia’s Threshold Accord contributed technical expertise in corridor stability, invaluable given the uncertain, ancient nature of whatever pathway would lead to the original world. Chancellor Meret, still processing Halloway’s own recent crisis, insisted on contributing regardless, citing the debt her world already owed. Even delegations that had remained cautious throughout the Watch’s founding negotiations stepped forward now, the shared, immediate threat overriding whatever hesitation had previously held them back.

”This is what it’s actually for,” Ethan said quietly, watching the courtyard transform into a genuine, coordinated mobilization effort unlike anything this volume had produced before. ”Not me, alone, rushing into every crisis. This.”

”It only works because you built it this way from the start,” Suresh said beside him, clipboard already tracking the rapidly assembling response with practiced efficiency. ”Don’t forget that part, either.”

The corridor to the original world, once Kaia’s technical team and the system’s combined effort finally located and stabilized a viable pathway, opened into something that made the entire assembled expedition fall silent with genuine, reverent awe.

Unlike the buried city’s dark, ancient architecture, unlike the Deep Layer’s vast, patient emptiness, this world resolved into something that looked, disorientingly, like the earliest possible version of everything Ethan had encountered throughout this entire story — familiar in its underlying shape, yet unmistakably foundational, raw, unfinished in ways that suggested every subsequent Instance had simply built layers of refinement atop this original, unpolished template.

A sky, colored in shades that felt both familiar and subtly wrong. A landscape carrying the recognizable shape of civilization, yet somehow simpler, more essential, as though every world that came after had elaborated endlessly on ideas this place had only just begun to establish.

”This is it,” Candidate Zero said quietly, their presence carrying genuine, ancient reverence. ”I remember now, fully. This is where everything began.”

The governing tier’s remaining presence was already visible in the sky overhead, gold-violet fractures spreading rapidly across the original world’s foundational atmosphere, the Reset protocol’s activation sequence clearly already well underway.

[TRANSMISSION: YOUR INTERFERENCE WAS ANTICIPATED. THIS LOCATION’S ISOLATION MAKES DEFENSE CONSIDERABLY MORE DIFFICULT THAN EARTH’S OWN, RECENTLY REINFORCED ARCHITECTURE.]

”Maybe,” Ethan said, drawing the Void Sword, the full weight of the assembled Watch’s coordinated response settling into place behind him. ”But you keep making the same mistake, over and over. You assume this is still about me, alone, standing against you. It’s not. Look behind me.”

The silver entities’ cold, geometric presence flickered, taking in, for the first time, the full scale of what had actually arrived — not a small, desperate team, but a genuine, coordinated coalition drawn from dozens of Instances, each one having chosen, deliberately, to answer the call the moment it went out.

[TRANSMISSION: RECALCULATING.]

”Yeah,” Ethan said, feeling something steady and resolute settle into his voice. ”You should probably keep doing that. Because every single time you’ve tried this, we’ve gotten better at answering it together, and you’re the only one still fighting this alone.”

The confrontation that followed unfolded across the original world’s fracturing sky, the assembled expedition working in genuine, practiced coordination to counter the governing tier’s desperate, escalating attempts to complete the Reset’s activation before it could be stopped.

Malachar and his own Instance-9 forces held a defensive perimeter around the foundational template’s most critical points, drawing on tactical discipline built through a decade of hard-won experience. Kaia’s technical team worked frantically to stabilize the fracturing corridor connections, preventing the Reset’s gathering power from fully consolidating. Sundari and Arjun, working alongside Candidate Zero and a still-fragile but determined Kestrel, applied every ounce of accumulated wisdom about this ancient system’s own architecture to counter the extraction attempt directly.

And Ethan, at the center of it all, channeled the full, collective weight of the network’s voluntary resistance — not alone this time, but genuinely, deliberately supported by every world that had chosen to answer the call.

The governing tier’s activation sequence strained, faltered, and finally, catastrophically, collapsed under the combined weight of an opposition it had consistently, fatally underestimated.

[TRANSMISSION: RESET PROTOCOL — TERMINATED.]

The original world’s fracturing sky began, slowly, to heal, and the assembled expedition, exhausted but victorious, watched the silver entities’ presence flicker weakly, their cold, unshakeable authority finally, decisively broken.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the aftermath with careful, methodical relief, would like to raise one final observation.]

Ethan, breathing hard but genuinely triumphant, glanced over. ”What.”

[NOTICE: With the Reset protocol terminated and the governing tier’s remaining authority critically weakened, the system has detected something unexpected in the original world’s own foundational architecture — long dormant, previously masked by the governing tier’s own interference.]

[NOTICE: A signal, ancient and patient, finally free to surface after however many centuries of suppression.]

[NOTICE: It appears this world, the true origin point of everything the network eventually became, has been waiting — just like every other piece of architecture this story has encountered — for someone to finally ask it what it actually wants.]
