Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”Someone was listening,” Ethan repeated, already reaching for the Void Sword out of pure reflex, though there was nothing visible in the courtyard to point it at. ”Inside our network. Watching the whole conversation.”

[NOTICE: The system would clarify, before alarm escalates further, that ”someone” may not be the correct word. The secondary signal does not carry a personhood signature the way the governing tier, or Candidate Zero, or even Wren’s transmission did. It reads more like an automated response — something old, dormant, that simply activated the instant a specific word was spoken aloud.]

”Which word,” Malachar asked, already on his feet, scanning the courtyard with the wary alertness of a man who’d spent a decade never fully trusting a quiet moment.

[NOTICE: ”Convergence.”]

The word hung in the air, and Ethan felt the shape of the morning’s crisis quietly, unpleasantly deepen. ”So somewhere in our own network’s architecture, there’s something that’s been sitting dormant this whole time, just waiting for that specific word to get said.”

[NOTICE: That is the system’s current working theory, yes.]

”Can you trace it,” Sundari asked. ”Find out where it activated from.”

[NOTICE: The system is attempting that now. It would note, with some professional embarrassment, that this represents the third time this year it has discovered dormant architecture buried within Earth’s own foundational structure that nobody previously knew existed.]

”At this point,” Ethan muttered, ”I’m just gonna assume my entire courtyard is secretly built on top of an infinite stack of ancient secrets.”

[NOTICE: The system would not entirely rule that out.]

The trace took the better part of an hour, the system working carefully through layers of the distributed foundational architecture — the same network of embedded, shared systems that had replaced the old centralized structure weeks earlier — until it finally, cautiously, delivered its answer.

[NOTICE: The signal did not originate from Earth’s own local architecture. It originated from a broader, network-wide monitoring layer — something embedded across every participating Instance’s own distributed system, activated simultaneously the moment the word ”Convergence” was spoken anywhere within range of the Watch’s own communication infrastructure.]

Ethan sat with that, something clicking into place with growing unease. ”So it’s not spying on us specifically. It’s a trigger. Built into the network itself, a long time ago, that goes off automatically whenever somebody says that specific word.”

[NOTICE: That appears to be the case. The system suspects this trigger predates even the foundational architecture’s own distribution — possibly embedded during the network’s original construction, centuries before Arjun Mehra, before Candidate Zero, possibly before the concept of ”Instances” as we understand them existed at all.]

”So whoever built our entire network,” Kaia said slowly, ”already knew, from the very beginning, that Convergence was something worth building an alarm for.”

The implication settled over the courtyard with unsettling weight.

”That’s not reassuring,” Kael said. ”That’s the opposite of reassuring.”

”No,” Sundari agreed. ”But it does tell us something useful. Whatever built this network, whatever the original architects were — they knew this threat existed. They built in a warning system for it. That means, at minimum, it’s not an unprecedented threat. Somebody’s dealt with this before.”

They brought the discovery, along with the full account of Wren’s warning, before the full Grand Concord that afternoon — the assembled delegations absorbing the news with the particular, weary resolve of people who’d genuinely hoped, only weeks earlier, that the era of impossible, world-spanning crises had finally concluded.

”I want to be honest with everyone,” Ethan said, standing before the gathered representatives. ”I don’t know what we’re actually facing yet. Wren wouldn’t tell us the full story of what happened to his own network. All we’ve got is a warning, an ancient trigger nobody knew existed, and a word — Convergence — that apparently scared whoever built our entire multiverse enough to leave an alarm behind for it.”

”What do you propose,” the presiding representative asked.

”I think we need to actually go looking,” Ethan said. ”Not wait passively for whatever’s coming to arrive and explain itself on its own terms. Wren said our network’s ’wall’ is thinning — that means there’s a literal edge to explore, somewhere beyond every Instance we’ve ever mapped. I want to send a proper, authorized expedition there. Find out what we’re actually dealing with before it finds us first.”

The proposal generated considerable debate — Reyla, predictably, raising careful concerns about resource allocation given how recently the network had finished stabilizing from its last crisis; Chancellor Meret offering cautious support, her own world’s recent brush with catastrophe having taught her the value of proactive investigation over reactive scrambling; the Instance 12-Kesh envoy raising the genuinely difficult question of whether provoking contact with an unknown, potentially hostile force was actually wiser than simply reinforcing existing defenses and waiting.

It was Malachar, finally, who offered the argument that tipped the debate.

”I spent a decade building walls around my own world, convinced that isolation and preparedness alone would keep it safe,” he said. ”It worked, to a point. But it also meant I never actually understood the threats I was defending against — I just reacted to them, over and over, exhausting myself in the process. Ethan’s suggesting something different. Understanding before reacting. I think, given everything Wren’s already told us, that’s worth the resources it costs.”

The vote, when it finally came, authorized the expedition with a clear, if not unanimous, majority.

Assembling the team took the better part of two days, the Watch’s now well-practiced coordination infrastructure proving its worth once again — Kaia’s technical expertise in corridor stability considered essential, given that nobody had ever attempted to travel toward the network’s own literal boundary before. Sundari’s centuries of ancient-architecture experience made her an obvious inclusion. Arjun, now solid and steady enough to travel without risk of destabilizing, insisted on joining, his own history with refusing power and building connection instead feeling, to him, directly relevant to whatever diplomatic challenge might be waiting.

Malachar volunteered as well, his hard-won leadership experience and combat capability both valuable insurance against the genuine unknown they were about to walk into. Kael and Ren rounded out the team’s defensive capability, and, at the last moment, Wren himself — still cautious, still guarded, but apparently trusting Ethan’s earlier promise enough to offer his own careful, remote guidance through the connection the system had managed to stabilize.

”I can’t come with you,” Wren explained, his voice steadier now than it had been during their first contact, the accumulated days of careful, patient trust-building clearly having eased something in him. ”I don’t have a physical presence anymore, not in any form that could travel through your network’s own transit corridors. But I can guide you. I know what the edge of a network actually looks like, from the inside. I’ve seen it before.”

”Then guide us,” Ethan said. ”We’ll take whatever help we can get.”

They gathered at the terminal chamber the following morning, the assembled expedition carrying the particular, focused tension of people preparing to walk into genuinely uncharted territory — not another Instance, not the Deep Layer, not even the Root’s colorless void, but the literal edge of everything the network had ever mapped.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the preparations, would like to raise one final piece of information before departure — something it discovered while continuing to investigate the network-wide monitoring trigger from the previous day.]

Ethan paused, sword half-strapped to his back. ”What now.”

[NOTICE: The system has identified the trigger’s original activation date — the very first time, in the network’s entire recorded history, that the word ”Convergence” was spoken aloud anywhere within its boundaries.]

”When was that,” Ethan asked, already bracing.

[NOTICE: It was not, as one might expect, during this current crisis, or even during the Grinding. The trigger’s very first recorded activation occurred centuries ago — during the exact same period Candidate Zero’s own throne room records place their initial acceptance of the seat.]

The implication landed with unsettling weight.

[NOTICE: The system believes Candidate Zero may have known about the threat of Convergence from the very beginning of their own reign — possibly even before they built the governing tier, before they built the Root, before any of the crises this network has already survived.]

Ethan felt the Void Sword’s hum sharpen against his shoulder, wary and alert.

[NOTICE: Which raises an uncomfortable question the system does not yet have an answer for.]

[NOTICE: If Candidate Zero has known about this threat for centuries, and never once mentioned it — even during their own recovery, even during every conversation about the network’s true origin and purpose — the system believes it is worth asking, urgently, before this expedition departs.]

[NOTICE: What, exactly, is Candidate Zero still not telling us?]
