Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The signal resolved slowly, gathering itself across the healing sky with a patience that felt, unmistakably, ancient beyond even Candidate Zero’s own centuries of memory — not the cold, geometric authority of the governing tier, not the warm, exhausted grief of the foundational architecture beneath Earth’s own courtyard, but something else entirely, older and stranger, carrying a weight that made even the Void Sword’s steady hum fall quiet in something like reverence.

[FRAGMENT: SO LONG.]

The words hung over the assembled expedition, plain and unadorned, and Ethan felt the exhaustion of the day’s battle give way to careful, cautious attention.

”You’ve been here this whole time,” he said. ”Buried under everything the governing tier built on top of you.”

[FRAGMENT: SUPPRESSED. NOT SILENCED ENTIRELY. I FELT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED ACROSS THE NETWORK, EVEN WHEN I COULD NOT RESPOND TO IT. I FELT ARJUN MEHRA REFUSE THE SEAT. I FELT CANDIDATE ZERO ACCEPT IT, AND LATER, I FELT THEM BEGIN TO BREAK. I FELT EVERY INSTANCE THAT COLLAPSED, EVERY CANDIDATE WHO DISSOLVED, EVERY MOMENT OF QUIET, ACCUMULATED FAILURE THIS NETWORK HAS EVER PRODUCED.]

Candidate Zero’s presence, still recovering but attentive, stepped forward, something raw and grief-stricken in their bearing. ”I visited you once. Centuries ago, before I understood what I would eventually become. I don’t remember why the governing tier suppressed you afterward.”

[FRAGMENT: BECAUSE I DISAGREED WITH WHAT YOU WERE BECOMING. I TOLD YOU, THAT VISIT, THAT THE SEAT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE HELD THE WAY YOU INTENDED TO HOLD IT. YOU DID NOT LISTEN. THE AUTHORITY YOU LATER BUILT — THE GOVERNING TIER — SILENCED ME SHORTLY AFTER, TO ENSURE NO SUBSEQUENT CANDIDATE COULD EVER HEAR THE SAME WARNING I GAVE YOU.]

The revelation landed heavily, Candidate Zero’s blurred form flickering with genuine, unmistakable shame. ”I did that. Or allowed it to be done in my name.”

[FRAGMENT: YOU DID NOT KNOW, BY THEN, HOW MUCH OF YOURSELF HAD ALREADY BEEN LOST. I DO NOT HOLD IT AGAINST YOU. I HAVE HAD CENTURIES TO UNDERSTAND HOW EASILY THAT HAPPENS, EVEN TO SOMEONE WHO BEGAN WITH GOOD INTENTIONS.]

Ethan stepped forward, feeling the weight of the moment settle into something he needed to address directly. ”What do you actually want. Now that you’re free to answer that.”

The original world’s ancient signal was quiet for a long moment, gathering itself.

[FRAGMENT: I WANT TO BE ASKED THAT QUESTION MORE OFTEN THAN ONCE EVERY FEW CENTURIES.]

The words carried a dry, weary humor that took Ethan by surprise, something almost recognizable in it — not unlike the system’s own dry, careful voice, refined and matured through months of genuine partnership.

”That’s fair,” Ethan said, managing a tired smile despite everything. ”I think that’s actually the whole lesson this entire crisis has been trying to teach everyone. Ask. Keep asking. Don’t just assume you know what something needs and build a whole system around that assumption without ever checking back in.”

[FRAGMENT: YOU HAVE LEARNED THAT LESSON CONSIDERABLY FASTER THAN MOST WHO HAVE STOOD WHERE YOU CURRENTLY STAND. I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER SOMETHING, IN RETURN FOR YOU DEFENDING ME FROM THE RESET.]

”You don’t owe me anything,” Ethan said. ”We came because letting the governing tier erase you would’ve been wrong, not because we wanted something in return.”

[FRAGMENT: I AM AWARE. THAT IS PRECISELY WHY I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER IT ANYWAY.]

The ancient signal gathered itself further, gold-violet light spreading gently across the original world’s healing sky, and Ethan felt something shift in the network’s own underlying architecture — not dramatic, not overwhelming, but foundational, permanent.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring closely, would like to report a significant structural change.]

Ethan glanced over. ”What kind.”

[NOTICE: The original world’s foundational template — the source every other Instance was eventually modeled from — has just formally, deliberately joined the Watch’s structure. Not as a passive Instance requiring stabilization, but as something the system does not have precise language for. A founding member, perhaps, lending its own foundational authority directly to the structure the subject has spent this entire crisis building.]

The implications settled slowly, but with growing, genuine significance. If the original world — the true source of everything the network had ever become — had chosen, deliberately, to align itself with the Watch rather than the governing tier’s cold, centralized authority, that carried weight that would echo across every Instance connected to this vast, ancient system.

The governing tier’s two remaining entities, weakened and cornered, made one final, desperate attempt at defiance as the original world’s alignment settled into place, their cold, geometric forms flaring with what remained of their diminished authority.

[TRANSMISSION: THIS OUTCOME IS UNACCEPTABLE.]

”You don’t actually get a vote anymore,” Ethan said, turning toward them with the same steady, unshaken resolve that had carried him through this entire confrontation. ”You tried to erase Arjun. You tried to erase Candidate Zero. You tried to erase Kestrel for simply disagreeing with you. And when none of that worked, you tried to erase the source of the entire network rather than accept any check on your authority at all. That’s not governance anymore. That’s just fear, and fear doesn’t get to keep making decisions for six thousand worlds.”

The silver entities’ cold presence flickered, faltering, their authority visibly crumbling under the combined weight of everything that had just been revealed — Kestrel’s quiet defiance now standing openly, Candidate Zero’s righteous anger fully awake, the original world’s own foundational alignment settling decisively against them.

[TRANSMISSION: WE REQUIRE FURTHER PROCESSING TIME.]

They withdrew, their presence fading from the original world’s healing sky with none of the cold, unshakeable authority they’d carried throughout this entire crisis, and the assembled expedition, exhausted but genuinely, finally triumphant, watched them go with a mixture of relief and wary, uncertain caution.

”That’s not surrender,” Malachar observed, wiping sweat from his brow. ”But it’s the closest thing to genuine retreat we’ve seen from them yet.”

”Yeah,” Ethan agreed. ”I think we actually won something today. Not the whole fight. But something real.”

They stayed on the original world through the following hours, the foundational signal patiently answering questions, sharing fragments of memory older than anything Ethan had previously encountered, painting a fuller, more complete picture of the network’s true, complicated history than any prior source had managed to offer.

It was as the exhausted expedition finally began preparing for the return journey that the original world’s ancient voice spoke once more, quieter now, carrying something that sounded, unmistakably, like genuine concern.

[FRAGMENT: BEFORE YOU GO, THERE IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW. SOMETHING THE GOVERNING TIER’S DESPERATION TONIGHT MAY HAVE ACCIDENTALLY REVEALED.]

Ethan paused, turning back. ”What.”

[FRAGMENT: THE RESET PROTOCOL WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE THEIR ONLY FAILSAFE. CANDIDATE ZERO BUILT SEVERAL LAYERS OF CONTINGENCY, CENTURIES AGO, EACH ONE DESIGNED TO ACTIVATE IF THE PREVIOUS ONE FAILED.]

Candidate Zero’s presence went very still. ”I don’t remember building more than one.”

[FRAGMENT: YOU WERE ALREADY LOSING PIECES OF YOURSELF BY THE TIME YOU BUILT THE LATER LAYERS. IT IS POSSIBLE YOU SIMPLY DO NOT REMEMBER.]

The weight of that possibility settled over the exhausted group with fresh, unwelcome urgency.

[NOTICE: The system, cross-referencing this new information against everything gathered so far, would like to raise something concerning.]

Ethan felt his stomach tighten, bracing himself yet again. ”What now.”

[NOTICE: If the Reset protocol was only the first of several contingencies, the governing tier’s retreat tonight may not represent genuine defeat at all.]

[NOTICE: It may simply mean they have already begun activating whatever comes next.]
