Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The rest, this time, actually happened.

Ethan spent the following week doing almost nothing of consequence, and treasured every minute of it. He slept properly. He ate meals that didn’t come with countdowns attached. He wandered the Citadel’s courtyard watching Kael teach a new batch of volunteers, watching Malachar argue good-naturedly with Halvorsen over some minor point of Instance-9 policy, watching the tea golem expand its repertoire to include something that might, generously, be called baking.

It was on the eighth morning, sitting on the low wall near the World Tree with a cup of tea he had absolutely no intention of rushing, that the sky changed.

Not violently. Not with fracture lines or ominous gold-violet light. It simply — softened, all at once, the ordinary blue overhead deepening for a moment into something that looked, briefly, like the scrolling archival text Ethan had grown so accustomed to seeing in the Deep Layer, before settling back into unremarkable, ordinary sky.

Ethan didn’t even reach for the sword. He just watched it happen, sipping his tea, and waited for the system to explain.

[NOTICE: The system would like to report something significant, though not, it believes, alarming.]

”Go ahead,” Ethan said, unhurried.

[NOTICE: With the foundational system’s distribution complete and stable, the Watch’s council has just authorized the first network-wide deactivation of legacy threat-escalation protocols — the old, punitive systems every Instance’s individual Framework once relied upon to enforce apocalypse-level trials, regardless of whether those trials still served any purpose.]

Ethan sat with that for a moment, turning the implications over slowly. ”You’re saying every world’s apocalypse is just — turning off. All at once.”

[NOTICE: Not entirely. Instances still facing genuine, active threats retain full defensive capability. But the punitive, escalating threat generation that characterized the old Framework model — the endless waves, the manufactured crises designed to force growth through suffering — that mechanism has just been formally, permanently disabled across every participating Instance.]

Ethan felt something settle in his chest, warm and quietly profound. ”So kids on six thousand worlds just woke up this morning to a slightly less terrifying version of their own apocalypse.”

[NOTICE: That is a reasonably accurate summary, yes.]

He spent the rest of the morning watching the reports come in, relayed through the Watch’s own distributed communication network — brief, simple messages from Instance after Instance, each one confirming the same quiet, undramatic transformation.

Instance 6-Halloway reported their sky’s persistent gold-violet fractures, lingering since their near-collapse, finally fully healing for the first time since the crisis began. Instance 19-Marrow’s Chancellor Meret sent a message that consisted entirely of a single line: ”My children asked if the monsters are done being scary now. I told them yes.” The Threshold Accord’s own homeworld reported the first fully quiet night in recorded memory, no gate activations, no threat escalations, just ordinary, unremarkable rest.

Kaia found Ethan reading through the accumulated reports, her own expression carrying something Ethan hadn’t seen from her before — genuine, unburdened relief.

”Four generations,” she said quietly, sitting beside him. ”My grandmother spent her entire life maintaining a corridor for a man who never came back. My mother spent hers waiting for someone else to finish what he started. I spent mine finding you. And now, this morning, I woke up to a sky that isn’t actively trying to kill anyone for the first time since before any of us were born.”

”How’s that feel,” Ethan asked gently.

”Strange,” Kaia admitted. ”Good, but strange. I don’t quite know what to do with a life that isn’t organized around waiting for a crisis anymore.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said, understanding the sentiment more than he expected to. ”I think that’s gonna be a pretty common feeling, actually, across a lot of worlds, for a while.”

The Instance-9 delegation’s own report, delivered personally by Malachar over the courtyard’s midday meal, carried a particular weight given everything that world had endured under his own decade of centralized rule.

”Our monster incursion rates were already low,” he said. ”I made sure of that, at considerable cost. But the punitive escalation protocols — the ones that would have triggered increasingly severe trials the longer any dissent went unresolved — those are gone now too. I didn’t even realize how much of my own governance had been shaped by fear of exactly that mechanism until it stopped existing.”

”You built a whole throne trying to outrun a threat that’s been quietly, invisibly manipulating every world’s stability this entire time,” Ethan said slowly, the full weight of it settling. ”Not just yours. All of them.”

”It would appear so,” Malachar said. ”I find myself, strangely, both relieved and considerably more upset about the last decade of my own life than I expected to be.”

”That’s fair,” Ethan said. ”Take the time you need to sit with that. Nobody’s rushing you toward anything anymore.”

Not every report carried the same easy relief. Instance 12-Kesh’s delegation, still processing Voren’s own long, difficult recovery, sent word that their world’s population had reacted to the sky’s transformation with genuine, complicated grief — two centuries of sacrifice, of believing their successor’s dissolution had purchased necessary safety, suddenly revealed as unnecessary, at least in its most extreme form.

”It’s not that they regret helping Voren,” the envoy explained, when Ethan reached out personally. ”It’s that they’re realizing, now, how much of what he sacrificed might never have needed sacrificing at all, if someone had simply tried a different approach centuries earlier.”

Ethan sat with that weight for a long while, feeling the particular, uncomfortable responsibility of having proven, decisively, that an easier path had always existed — a proof that, however necessary and hard-won, couldn’t help but recontextualize every prior sacrifice made under the old system’s assumptions.

”Tell them,” he said finally, ”that Voren’s sacrifice mattered. It bought time, it bought stability, even if it wasn’t the only way. Nobody gets to go back and undo what already happened. But we can make sure it’s the last time anyone has to make that particular trade.”

That evening, sitting once more with the assembled circle that had carried him through this entire crisis — Suresh, Malachar, Sundari, Arjun, Kael, Ren, Kaia — Ethan raised his cup in a quiet, unceremonious toast.

”To every sky that’s a little less scary this morning than it was yesterday,” he said.

The group echoed it, quiet and genuine, and the courtyard settled into the particular, contented stillness of people who understood, finally, that something real and lasting had actually been accomplished.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the evening’s quiet celebration, would like to add a final piece of data before allowing the moment to continue undisturbed.]

Ethan glanced over, more curious than wary this time. ”What.”

[NOTICE: With threat-escalation protocols deactivated across the network, the system has detected something it did not anticipate — a surge in what it can only describe as ”voluntary system inquiries.” Individual Idle/AFK-type protocols and their local variants, across dozens of Instances, reaching out independently, asking questions about their own continued function now that the old, punitive architecture no longer dictates their purpose.]

Ethan felt a genuine smile cross his face. ”They’re asking what they’re supposed to do now that they’re not required to hurt anyone anymore.”

[NOTICE: Precisely.]

”What are you telling them,” Ethan asked.

[NOTICE: The system has been telling them the truth. That it does not fully know either, having only recently worked through the same question itself. But that it has found, through direct experience, that the answer tends to arrive naturally, given enough patience, and enough genuine partnership with the people they’re meant to serve.]

Ethan sat with that, the weight of it settling somewhere warm and quietly proud.

”That’s a good answer,” he said.

[NOTICE: The system learned it from somewhere.]
