Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The morning after the celebration, nursing a cup of tea and an entirely reasonable amount of leftover cake for breakfast, Ethan finally decided to deal with something that had been quietly, persistently annoying him since roughly the second week of this entire apocalypse.

”I want to talk about the mug,” he announced, to nobody in particular, at the breakfast table.

Suresh, across from him, didn’t even look up from his tablet. ”Which one. There are, at last count, fourteen distinct varieties currently in circulation.”

”Fourteen,” Ethan repeated, genuinely appalled. ”There are fourteen versions of my face on a mug.”

”Fifteen, if you count the one from Instance 6-Halloway that has you drawn with three arms,” Suresh said. ”Apparently the artist worked from a garbled description.”

Ethan pressed both hands over his face, the same gesture he’d been making about this exact topic since before the mug had even properly gone viral. ”This ends today. I want it formally, officially retired. All of it. Every variant, every world, every three-armed misrepresentation.”

”You understand,” Suresh said carefully, ”that the mug has, at this point, become something of an independent cultural phenomenon across multiple Instances. It’s not really under your jurisdiction.”

”I have jurisdiction over my own face,” Ethan said. ”That’s got to count for something.”

He raised the matter formally that afternoon, half-joking, half-genuinely determined, before a gathering that included, somewhat absurdly given the stakes of every prior Watch session, a considerable portion of the assembled delegations who’d stayed on for the celebration.

”I’d like to propose an agenda item,” he said, standing before the loosely assembled group with a straight face that fooled absolutely nobody. ”The formal, multiversal retirement of all merchandise depicting my likeness, up to and including, but not limited to, mugs.”

Reyla, of all people, was the first to respond, with something that might have been the driest joke Ethan had heard from her yet. ”This feels like an inappropriate use of the Watch’s founding authority.”

”I built the founding authority,” Ethan said. ”I get at least one petty use out of it.”

Kaia, laughing despite herself, raised a hand. ”For the record, the Threshold Accord formally opposes this motion. Our merchandise revenue from the mug has funded three separate rehabilitation initiatives for recovering Instances.”

Ethan blinked. ”Wait. The money’s actually going somewhere useful?”

”Extensively useful,” Kaia confirmed. ”Instance 19-Marrow’s reconstruction fund is nearly forty percent mug-financed at this point.”

Ethan sat with that revelation for a long, deflated moment, the wind fully knocked out of his righteous campaign against novelty pottery.

”That’s genuinely infuriating,” he said finally. ”You’ve made it impossible for me to hate the mug on principle.”

The debate that followed carried the same warm, low-stakes energy as the previous night’s celebration, delegates weighing in with genuine amusement rather than the careful, exhausted gravity of every prior council decision this volume had demanded.

”I’d like to propose a compromise,” Malachar offered, clearly enjoying himself considerably more than the situation strictly warranted. ”The mug remains in circulation, given its charitable value. However, all future designs require formal approval from the subject, to prevent further three-armed inaccuracies.”

”I can accept that,” Ethan said grudgingly. ”But I want the record to show I fought for full retirement first.”

”Duly recorded,” Suresh said, clipboard reappearing with suspicious speed for someone who supposedly wasn’t tracking party logistics anymore. ℯℯ𝑙.

The vote, when it came, was unanimous and entirely unserious — the mug’s continued existence formally ratified, with the caveat that Ethan retained personal veto power over any future design, an amendment that several delegations immediately began treating as a fun new challenge rather than a genuine restriction.

”You do understand,” Kaia said afterward, still grinning, ”that giving you veto power just means every artist across six thousand worlds is going to spend the next several months trying to design something you can’t object to.”

Ethan groaned, the particular, familiar sound of a man who had just, somehow, made his own problem considerably worse through his own well-intentioned intervention. ”That’s not what I wanted.”

”No,” Kaia agreed, delighted. ”But it’s what you’re getting.”

The following weeks proved her entirely correct. Submissions arrived from across the network with alarming enthusiasm — a design from Instance 6-Halloway depicting Ethan asleep on his sky-couch, captioned THE ULTIMATE GOD TAKES A NAP, which he approved, grudgingly, on the grounds that it was at least accurate. A version from the Meridian Concord showing him mid-exhale, small figures visibly flying off the edge of the mug, which he vetoed on the grounds that Kael Draven had specifically asked never to be reminded of the grain silo incident again. A particularly earnest attempt from a group of Instance-9 children, depicting Ethan with the tea golem, which he approved instantly and without hesitation, no notes.

”This is worse than any of the actual crises,” he told the system one evening, scrolling through the latest batch of submissions with the particular exhaustion of a man who had genuinely believed retirement would be simpler than escalation. ”I fought titans. I negotiated with ancient system architecture. None of it prepared me for reviewing mug art.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to note that it finds this development genuinely delightful.]

”You would.”

[NOTICE: It would also like to point out that the subject has, in fact, approved eleven of the fourteen submissions received this week, suggesting his objection to the process is somewhat less sincere than he claims.]

Ethan didn’t have a good response to that.

It was Meenakshi, unexpectedly, who offered the resolution that finally settled the matter properly — not through any formal council process, but through the same practical, unbothered wisdom she’d brought to every other complication this story had thrown near her bakery.

”Let the golem design one,” she suggested, when Ethan mentioned the ongoing saga over pastries one afternoon. ”It knows you better than any of these artists across a dozen worlds who’ve never actually met you. Let it make the official one, and tell everyone else that’s the canon version. Simple.”

Ethan sat with that, genuinely surprised he hadn’t thought of it himself. ”That’s actually a really good idea.”

The golem, given the assignment, took to it with characteristic, quiet dedication, disappearing for the better part of two days into whatever creative process passed for a tea-brewing machine’s design work, before finally emerging with a finished piece that Ethan, reviewing it that evening, found himself genuinely, unexpectedly moved by.

It wasn’t dramatic. It didn’t show him mid-battle, or asleep on a couch in the sky, or exhaling anyone into a grain silo. It simply depicted Ethan, sitting at the small courtyard table, cup in hand, the golem itself beside him, both of them rendered with the particular, careful warmth of something made by someone — or something — that genuinely, deeply cared.

”This one,” Ethan said quietly, turning the design over in his hands. ”This is the official mug. No more submissions needed.”

The golem chirped, unmistakably pleased, and rolled a small, satisfied circle before returning to its usual rounds.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the exchange, would like to note that this represents a genuinely fitting resolution to what began as an entirely frivolous complaint.]

Ethan set the design down carefully, feeling something warm and quietly content settle over him. ”Yeah. Guess even the stupid stuff turns out meaningful eventually, if you let it.”

[NOTICE: The system believes that observation applies to considerably more than mugs.]

Ethan glanced up, curious. ”Meaning what?”

[NOTICE: The system would simply like to note that the Watch’s next formal council session is scheduled for tomorrow — the first time, in this entire crisis, that the agenda contains nothing more urgent than routine, ordinary business.]

[NOTICE: It believes this represents, genuinely, finally, the true and complete end of this volume’s central crisis.]
