Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The chamber’s gold-violet light convulsed violently, the governing tier’s sudden reclassification of Kestrel triggering something Ethan hadn’t anticipated — not a targeted strike, but a wholesale redirection of the extraction attempt, the two remaining silver entities abandoning their assault on the foundational architecture entirely to converge, with cold, singular focus, on Kestrel’s exposed, vulnerable form.

”They’re not trying to extract the Reset’s power anymore,” Sundari shouted over the growing chaos. ”They’re trying to destroy the dissent before it spreads further.”

Ethan felt the weight of the collective network’s resistance suddenly, dangerously unmoored, no longer opposed by a coordinated extraction attempt but instead facing something considerably more chaotic and immediate.

”Get behind me,” he said to Kestrel, already moving to intercept the converging entities, Void Sword raised.

”No,” Kestrel said, voice carrying a fragile but unmistakable determination. ”I have spent centuries hiding what I actually believed, disagreeing silently while doing nothing to act on it. If this is the moment that finally changes, I would rather it happen standing, not cowering behind someone else’s protection.”

The two silver entities struck simultaneously, their cold, geometric forms converging with brutal, coordinated precision, and Ethan barely managed to intercept the first strike, the Void Sword meeting silver with a violent, resonant clash that sent shockwaves through the already-straining chamber.

Arjun moved to intercept the second, his own recovered solidity proving sturdier than Ethan expected, blurred hands gripping the entity’s angular limb with a strength that spoke to centuries of dormant, barely-tapped power finally, deliberately unleashed.

”You built this tier to serve you,” Arjun said, straining against the entity’s cold resistance. ”The same way Candidate Zero built it to serve them. It’s time it remembered that authority isn’t supposed to run without anyone actually holding it accountable.”

The fight that followed carried a chaotic, desperate intensity unlike anything Ethan had faced throughout this entire volume — not a clean confrontation with clear stakes, but a scrambling, urgent defense against an authority determined to erase the first genuine crack in its own centuries-long unity before that crack could widen any further.

Candidate Zero’s throne, still recovering but drawing on reserves of strength Ethan hadn’t expected, added its own weight to the defense, gold-violet energy lashing out against the silver entities with the particular fury of someone finally, decisively turning against the very thing they’d once, unknowingly, given birth to.

”I built you to protect what I’d become,” Candidate Zero’s voice rang out through the chamber, carrying centuries of accumulated regret finally given proper, righteous anger. ”I did not build you to erase everyone who dares to change.”

The combined resistance — Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, Candidate Zero, and Kestrel’s own fragile but determined defiance — gradually, painfully began to turn the tide, the two remaining silver entities’ cold, coordinated assault faltering under the weight of an opposition considerably more unified than they’d apparently anticipated.

It was in that critical moment, the balance finally shifting toward something resembling hope, that Kestrel made a choice Ethan would spend considerable time afterward wishing he’d been fast enough to prevent.

Seeing an opening — a brief moment where both silver entities’ attention had shifted toward defending against Candidate Zero’s righteous assault — Kestrel stepped forward, placing themselves directly between the entities and the chamber’s straining foundational core, absorbing an attack meant to further destabilize the architecture entirely.

The strike that followed wasn’t meant to kill. Ethan understood that immediately, watching it land — it was meant to reclassify, to forcibly reabsorb, the same cold, clinical erasure that had nearly claimed Arjun days earlier, except delivered now with none of the careful restraint that prior attempt had shown.

”No!” Ethan shouted, already moving, but too far, too slow, the strike connecting before he could intervene.

Kestrel’s blurred form convulsed violently, the fragile, hard-won solidity they’d only just begun to rebuild tearing apart under the sudden, brutal reabsorption attempt, static and gold-violet light scattering across the chamber in erratic, agonized bursts.

”Hold on,” Ethan said, reaching Kestrel’s side, the same desperate urgency he’d felt fighting to keep Arjun stable days earlier now consuming every part of him. ”Stay with me. You said you wanted to try. This isn’t trying failing. This is just the hard part.”

Kestrel’s fracturing form flickered weakly, voice barely audible over the chamber’s ongoing chaos. ”I do not think I have enough left. Centuries of absorption does not simply reverse because I finally found the courage to resist it once.”

”You don’t get to decide that alone,” Ethan said fiercely, the same stubborn, unshakeable resolve that had carried him through every impossible crisis this story had thrown at him settling into every word. ”I didn’t let Arjun go. I’m not letting you go either.”

He reached for the same distributed technique that had saved Arjun, drawing on the collective, voluntary strength of the network’s own foundational architecture, still resisting the governing tier’s extraction attempt even amid the chaos of direct combat.

[NOTICE: The system, straining under the combined effort of maintaining network-wide resistance while also supporting an emergency stabilization, would like to confirm the situation’s severity.]

[NOTICE: Kestrel’s fragmentation is considerably more advanced than Arjun’s was during the earlier crisis. The system cannot guarantee successful stabilization.]

”Then we try anyway,” Ethan said, gritting his teeth against the strain, pouring everything he had left into the improvised, desperate effort.

The chamber’s gold-violet light gathered around Kestrel’s fracturing form, Sundari and Arjun adding their own strength to the effort, Candidate Zero’s throne lending whatever reserves it could spare without abandoning its own defensive stand against the remaining silver entities.

Slowly, agonizingly, Kestrel’s dissolving form began to steady — not fully, not cleanly, but enough, the fragmentation slowing into something considerably less catastrophic than the immediate crisis had threatened.

”Thank you,” Kestrel managed, voice fragile but present, the words costing them visible effort. ”I did not expect anyone to actually fight for me. I have been invisible for so long, even to myself, that I forgot what it felt like to matter enough for someone else to try.”

The two remaining silver entities, watching their reclassification attempt fail against the combined, unified resistance, withdrew abruptly, their cold, geometric presence retreating from the chamber with none of the measured, procedural calm they’d shown throughout every prior confrontation.

[TRANSMISSION: THE RESET PROTOCOL REMAINS ACTIVE. IT WILL BE TRIGGERED THROUGH ALTERNATIVE MEANS.]

The threat hung in the chamber’s exhausted, tense aftermath, and Ethan, kneeling beside Kestrel’s fragile, stabilizing form, felt the true weight of what they’d just survived settle over him.

”They’re not giving up,” he said quietly. ”Just changing tactics.”

”No,” Arjun agreed, exhausted but grim. ”And I don’t think we’ve seen the full extent of what ’alternative means’ actually implies yet.”

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the aftermath with careful, methodical attention, would like to raise something it has just detected — a piece of information the chaos of the confrontation nearly obscured entirely.]

Ethan glanced up, bracing himself yet again. ”What now.”

[NOTICE: During the fight, while the entities’ attention was focused on the direct confrontation, the system detected a separate, secondary transmission being routed through an entirely different pathway — not through the buried city’s architecture at all.]

[NOTICE: It appears the governing tier has begun redirecting the Reset protocol’s activation sequence toward a location outside the network’s own primary infrastructure entirely.]

[NOTICE: Somewhere the system has limited visibility into, but recognizes, with growing dread, from a designation buried deep in Candidate Zero’s own earliest archived memories.]

[NOTICE: It is targeting the very first Instance ever seeded by this entire system, centuries before any of the network’s current structure existed.]

[NOTICE: The original world. The one every other Instance was eventually modeled after.]

[NOTICE: If the Reset triggers there, the system believes it may not simply revert the network to an earlier state.]

[NOTICE: It may unmake the foundational template every other Instance — including Earth — was ever built from in the first place.]
