Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”A seventh candidate,” Ethan repeated slowly. ”Older than you. Older than the governing tier. That’s - that’s a lot of new information for one evening.”

”I know,” Arjun said, his blurred form still carrying the fragile unsteadiness of the previous night’s near-unraveling. ”I don’t have much more than fragments myself. The containment attempt loosened memories I didn’t know I still had, buried the same way my own fragment was buried in the foundational chamber. I think, now, that the governing tier didn’t just weaken me to prevent me from asking questions. I think they weakened me specifically to keep me from remembering this.”

[NOTICE: The system has been cross-referencing everything Arjun has recalled against its own archive access, and it would like to offer what limited corroboration it can.]

Ethan glanced up. ”Go ahead.”

[NOTICE: Buried in the foundational chamber’s own oldest records - beneath even the layer containing the eleven hundred failed Instances - the system found a designation it initially dismissed as corrupted noise during the earlier stabilization effort. It did not have bandwidth to investigate further at the time. Reviewing it now, in light of Arjun’s recovered memory, the system believes it may be relevant.]

”What’s the designation,” Ethan asked.

[NOTICE: It reads simply: ”CANDIDATE ZERO.”]

The words settled heavily over the small group gathered near the World Tree - Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, who’d joined partway through the conversation with the particular wariness of someone who’d already lived through enough surprises for one lifetime.

”Candidate Zero,” Sundari repeated. ”Not one of the six known cases. Not even a numbered case at all. Something before the counting even started.”

”That tracks with what I remember,” Arjun said. ”Fragments, mostly. A sense of something ancient, something that predates the entire counted history of unresolvable users. I don’t think Candidate Zero refused the seat the way the rest of us did. I think - and I want to be clear, this is genuinely uncertain, pieced together from half-remembered impressions rather than solid fact - I think Candidate Zero accepted it. Fully. And then built everything that came after, including whatever containment mechanism was just used against me.”

Ethan felt the shape of the story’s true architecture finally beginning to clarify, layer by layer, each revelation peeling back something older and more foundational than the last. ”So there’s a structure under the structure under the structure,” he said. ”The Watch, that we’re trying to build. The governing tier, that’s apparently been running things unaccountably for centuries. The foundational architecture, that we just helped stabilize. And now - Candidate Zero, underneath all of it, maybe still out there somewhere, maybe the actual source of everything that’s gone wrong this entire volume.”

”That’s my current understanding, yes,” Arjun said. ”Though I want to stress - I don’t know if Candidate Zero is still active in any meaningful sense. The governing tier itself might be all that remains of whatever they built, centuries ago, with no one actually steering it anymore. Or they might still be out there, watching, the same way I watched from the Deep Layer for centuries without anyone knowing.”

The revelation demanded action, but action, this time, came slower than the crisis Ethan had grown accustomed to responding to. There was no immediate threat bearing down, no countdown ticking toward catastrophe - just an unsettling, open question about who or what actually sat at the true root of everything they’d been fighting.

”We need more information before we do anything else,” Ethan said, the following morning, addressing the assembled group that had, by now, become something like his de facto war council - Suresh, Priya, Malachar, Kaia, Sundari, Kael, Ren, and the system’s constant, careful presence woven through every conversation. ”Charging blind into whatever’s actually behind the governing tier feels like exactly the kind of reckless mistake that’s gotten people hurt this entire volume.”

”Agreed,” Suresh said, clipboard already out, the familiar rhythm of practical planning helping ground the room after the previous night’s chaos. ”So what do we actually know, concretely, versus what’s still speculation?”

They worked through it methodically - the foundational architecture, stabilizing but still fragile, requiring ongoing distributed support the Watch’s structure was, at least, well-positioned to provide. The governing tier, cold and unaccountable, having withdrawn after Ethan’s refusal but almost certainly still watching, still calculating its next move. And Candidate Zero, a shadow at the edge of everything, unconfirmed, unproven, but carrying enough weight in Arjun’s recovered fragments that nobody in the room was willing to dismiss the possibility outright.

”The Watch’s founding negotiations are still ongoing,” Kaia pointed out. ”Forty-seven Instances still need stabilization support. We can’t put everything on hold to chase a shadow that might not even still exist.”

”No,” Ethan agreed. ”But we also can’t finish building something as important as the Watch without knowing whether there’s a bigger threat waiting to undermine it the moment it’s finished. If Candidate Zero built the governing tier, and the governing tier’s already tried twice to derail everything we’re building - once by opposing the Watch outright, once by offering me total power specifically to isolate and eventually corrupt me - I don’t think ignoring that possibility is actually safer than investigating it.”

Malachar, who’d been quiet through most of the discussion, finally spoke, his tone carrying the weight of hard-earned experience. ”I spent a decade believing the only way to protect my world was total, centralized vigilance - watching every threat myself, personally, because I didn’t trust anyone else to catch what I might miss. I nearly destroyed myself doing it. I’d caution against making the same mistake here, on a considerably larger scale. You don’t have to personally investigate Candidate Zero alone.”

”I know,” Ethan said, managing a tired, genuine smile. ”Believe me, I’ve learned that lesson. That’s actually why I want to bring this to the full Concord instead of quietly handling it myself. If there really is a Candidate Zero, potentially still active, potentially responsible for everything the governing tier’s been doing, that’s not something I should be investigating alone in some dramatic, secretive mission. That’s exactly the kind of thing the structure we’re building should actually be for.”

The formal proposal went to the Grand Concord that afternoon, delegates absorbing the revelation of a seventh, foundational candidate with the same mixture of alarm and grim resolve that had characterized nearly every major development this volume had produced.

”We formally request,” Ethan said, standing before the assembled representatives, ”that investigating Candidate Zero, and determining the true nature and current status of the governing tier, become an official function of the Watch’s founding mandate - not a personal mission for me or anyone else, but a genuine, collective undertaking, resourced and staffed the same way we’re already handling the forty-seven failing Instances.”

The vote, when it came, passed with considerably less debate than most of the Watch’s prior decisions - the shared, recent memory of watching an entire hidden authority nearly erase Arjun Mehra in front of them apparently enough to unify even the most cautious delegations behind decisive, collective action.

That evening, with the formal investigation authorized and the first working groups already assembling to begin, Ethan sat once more at the excavation site, exhausted but genuinely proud of what the Watch had just, for the first time, actually accomplished as a real, functioning body rather than an idea still being negotiated.

[NOTICE: The system would like to note that today represents a meaningful milestone - the first time the Watch’s structure has been tested by a genuine, active crisis, and the first time it has responded not through any single person’s unilateral action, but through collective, deliberate decision-making.]

”Yeah,” Ethan agreed, tired but satisfied. ”Feels like it might actually work.”

[NOTICE: The system would also like to raise something it has been holding since this morning, uncertain of the appropriate moment to share it.]

Ethan tensed slightly out of habit. ”What.”

[NOTICE: While cross-referencing the foundational chamber’s archive for any further trace of Candidate Zero, the system found one additional fragment - badly corrupted, but bearing a designation it recognizes immediately, because it matches something the subject has encountered before, in a considerably more mundane context.]

”What kind of designation.”

[NOTICE: A location tag. Coordinates, of a sort, formatted the same way the very first off-world signal was formatted, weeks ago, before Kaia’s delegation ever arrived.]

[NOTICE: According to this fragment, Candidate Zero’s last confirmed location was not the Deep Layer, not the foundational chamber, not anywhere within the network’s own architecture at all.]

[NOTICE: It points to Earth.]
