Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

They found Chancellor Meret’s missing administrators alive, which was, given everything else this crisis had thrown at them, a genuine relief - trapped rather than harmed, sealed behind a wall of shimmering, cold distortion roughly a hundred meters into the buried chamber’s outer passage, conscious and shaken but otherwise unhurt.

”It just - appeared,” one of them explained, voice unsteady, once the barrier had been carefully dismantled with a combination of Sundari’s expertise and the system’s own careful analysis. ”We were investigating the disturbance the same way we always do. Then the wall sealed shut behind us, and something spoke. Cold. Layered. It didn’t threaten us directly. It just asked questions.”

”What kind of questions,” Ethan asked.

”About you,” the administrator said, looking at him directly. ”About the Watch. About whether Instance 6-Halloway’s leadership genuinely believed a decentralized structure could actually hold, or whether we were simply too afraid to admit the old, centralized model had at least offered certainty, even at cost.”

Ethan felt something cold settle in his stomach at that. ”It’s not trying to conquer worlds. It’s trying to prove a point.”

”That would track with everything we’ve seen so far,” Sundari said grimly. ”An entity that’s held absolute, unaccountable authority for centuries doesn’t necessarily want more territory. It wants to be right. It wants proof that everything we’re building will eventually collapse back into needing exactly what it’s always provided.”

They didn’t find Candidate Zero waiting at the chamber’s center the way Ethan half-expected. Instead, they found the space eerily quiet, the throne-like structure at its heart dark and inactive, the cold, layered presence that had haunted their previous encounters notably absent.

”It’s not here,” Priya said, scanning the chamber with wary attentiveness. ”This whole expedition, and it’s just - gone?”

[NOTICE: The system would clarify. It is not gone. It has simply withdrawn its active presence, likely conserving whatever power remains after the foundational architecture’s severance. The system detects a faint, residual signature still present, considerably weaker than before.]

”So we won,” Kael said, cautious. ”Just like that.”

”I don’t think it’s that simple,” Ethan said, something uneasy settling in his chest despite the apparent victory. ”It’s not the kind of thing that just gives up after one setback.”

Arjun, who’d remained largely quiet since their return to the surface, finally spoke, his blurred form carrying a considering weight. ”I think this was never really about conquering Halloway. I think it was a demonstration, the same way the bakery was a demonstration - a way of showing us how much reach it still has, even weakened. It wanted us to come here. It wanted to see how we’d respond, together, as a genuine collective force, rather than the small, desperate teams it’s engaged before.”

”And?” Ethan pressed.

”And I think,” Arjun said slowly, ”based on the fact that it withdrew rather than confronting an entire coordinated expedition directly, it learned something it didn’t want to learn. That the structure you’re building is genuinely stronger than it anticipated.”

They stabilized Instance 6-Halloway’s own foundational chamber over the following hours, applying the same careful, distributed technique that had worked at both Earth’s and Marrow’s crises, the exhausted architecture there responding with the same grateful, surprised relief they’d witnessed twice before.

By the time they finished, exhaustion had settled deep into every member of the expedition, and Chancellor Meret, finally able to properly thank the team that had saved her world’s second crisis in as many weeks, insisted on hosting a proper meal before anyone attempted the return journey.

It was there, seated around a long, simple table in the Chancellor’s own modest quarters - considerably less grand than Ethan expected from someone leading eleven million people - that the true war room of this entire crisis finally took shape, not in some formal command center, but over shared food and exhausted, honest conversation.

”We need a better plan than reacting to wherever it shows up next,” Priya said, methodically working through the practical shape of the problem while accepting a second helping of whatever local dish Meret’s staff had prepared. ”It’s proven it can relocate, draw power from multiple sources, threaten specific, personal targets. We can’t keep responding crisis by crisis.”

”Agreed,” Malachar said. ”We need to understand what it actually wants, beyond simply proving a point. Every adversary I’ve faced, no matter how powerful, had some underlying motivation that, once understood, became exploitable.”

”I think Arjun’s onto something,” Ethan said, glancing at the ancient, blurred figure seated quietly at the table’s edge. ”It’s not trying to win territory. It’s trying to prove the old model was right - that centralized control was always necessary, that everything we’re building is doomed to fail the same way every prior attempt at distributed authority apparently has, across however many centuries it’s been watching.”

”So it needs us to fail,” Sundari said slowly. ”Not defeated in combat. Genuinely, structurally failed. Which means the actual battlefield isn’t Halloway, or Earth, or any single Instance. It’s the Watch itself.”

The table went quiet at that, the weight of the insight settling over everyone present.

”Then that’s where we actually fight this,” Ethan said finally. ”Not chasing it across the network, reacting to wherever it decides to threaten next. We finish building the Watch. Properly, thoroughly, with every protection we’ve already discussed. We prove, definitively, that the structure works - and every day it keeps working, Candidate Zero’s entire argument gets weaker.”

Malachar nodded slowly, something settling into grim agreement. ”That’s a harder fight than combat, in some ways. Slower. Less satisfying. But probably the only kind of fight that actually resolves this permanently.”

It was Meret, listening quietly through most of the strategic discussion, who finally spoke, her exhausted but genuine warmth carrying real weight.

”I want to formally apply for full Watch membership,” she said. ”Instance 6-Halloway abstained from the original vote, the same way Instance 19-Marrow did. I think that hesitation nearly cost both our worlds everything. I don’t want to make that mistake a third time.”

”That’s not a decision to make out of gratitude,” Ethan said carefully. ”Or fear. If you’re joining, I want it to be because you actually believe in what we’re building, not just because you’re relieved we showed up when you needed us.”

”I understand the difference,” Meret said. ”And I mean it regardless. I watched a structure built on trust, distributed authority, and genuine accountability actually show up for a world that had explicitly refused to participate in building it. That’s not something the old system ever offered anyone. I’d like my world to be part of building something better, going forward, rather than simply hoping to be rescued the next time it fails to protect itself.”

Ethan felt something genuinely warm settle in his chest at that, the first unambiguously positive outcome of an otherwise exhausting, unsettling day.

[NOTICE: The system, quiet through most of the evening’s conversation, finally interjected, its tone carrying a mixture of relief and renewed urgency.]

Ethan glanced over. ”What.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to formally note that Instance 6-Halloway’s application represents the forty-eighth Instance to join the Watch’s founding structure, and the third to do so following direct experience with a crisis the old system would have left them to face alone.]

[NOTICE: It would also like to raise something considerably more urgent. While monitoring residual signatures following Candidate Zero’s withdrawal, the system detected a final, faint transmission - not a threat this time, but something it did not expect at all.]

Ethan tensed immediately. ”What kind of transmission.”

[NOTICE: It appears to be addressed, not to the subject, but to Arjun Mehra specifically.]

[NOTICE: And unlike every prior communication from Candidate Zero, this one does not carry any trace of hostility.]

[NOTICE: It reads simply: ”I remember you. I am sorry for what I became. Please come find me before it’s too late to matter.”]
