Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The morning the last emergency notification formally expired felt, to Ethan, almost anticlimactic — no dramatic countdown, no ancient voice announcing a final threshold crossed. Just Suresh, over breakfast, mentioning it the way he might mention the weather.

”The Watch’s crisis-response designation for the Citadel just lapsed,” he said, sliding a tablet across the table. ”Officially, as of this morning, we’re no longer classified as an active emergency coordination site. We’re just — a sanctuary. The way we were always supposed to end up being, eventually.” 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂

Ethan stared at the notice for a long moment, the plain administrative language carrying more weight than its dry phrasing suggested. ”No more emergency designation. No more standing perimeter alerts. No more”

”No more sirens,” Suresh confirmed, something genuinely warm crossing his usually composed expression. ”No more midnight briefings. No more clipboard triage at three in the morning.”

Ethan felt something loosen in his chest that he hadn’t fully realized he was still carrying. ”That’s - actually kind of huge, Suresh.”

”It is,” Suresh agreed. ”I think we should mark it properly. Not with another committee session. Something else.”

Word spread through the Citadel over the course of the day, and Ethan watched it land differently across every corner of the community he’d spent this entire volume building, rebuilding, and defending.

Priya, briefing her defense volunteers on the news, found herself met with a mixture of relief and, surprisingly, a little wistfulness — months of shared purpose, shared danger, shared trust suddenly no longer organized around the next crisis.

”It’s strange,” she admitted to Ethan later, watching her trainees disperse for the evening with none of the usual tension. ”I’ve spent so long preparing people for the next attack that I almost don’t know what training looks like when it’s not urgent.”

”Then figure it out slowly,” Ethan said. ”That’s kind of the whole point of not being in crisis mode anymore. You get to actually take your time.”

Kael and Ren, for their part, seemed to settle into the news with quiet, easy contentment — the two of them had already, gradually, built something considerably more personal than the training partnership that first brought them together, and the removal of constant emergency pressure seemed, if anything, to give that something room to breathe properly for the first time.

Malachar took the news with a particular, thoughtful stillness that Ethan recognized immediately.

”I’ve never lived somewhere that wasn’t, in some sense, permanently braced for the next crisis,” he admitted. ”Even before the apocalypse, my Instance’s history was full of conflict. I don’t actually know what it looks like, a place that’s genuinely, structurally at peace rather than just holding its breath between disasters.”

”Neither did I, honestly,” Ethan said. ”Not really. Guess we’re gonna find out together.”

The Citadel’s physical transformation happened gradually over the following weeks, less a dramatic overhaul and more a quiet, accumulating shift in priorities. The defensive perimeter, once maintained with round-the-clock vigilance, relaxed into something more casual — still present, still capable, but no longer carrying the tense, anticipatory weight it had held throughout the crisis.

The excavation site, once a source of near-constant emergency activity, settled into Dr. Osei’s team’s careful, unhurried academic work — cataloguing, preserving, occasionally offering fascinating discoveries that no longer carried the immediate threat of catastrophic consequence attached to them.

Meenakshi’s rebuilt bakery, its display case fully restored and, per her earlier promise, considerably improved, became once again simply a bakery — a place people visited for pastries and conversation, rather than a site the entire multiverse had briefly watched become a bargaining chip in an ancient entity’s threat.

And the courtyard itself, once host to emergency Grand Concord sessions and desperate midnight mobilizations, slowly transformed into something closer to what it had briefly been, months ago, before any of this began — a genuine gathering space, filled with ordinary conversation, children playing near the World Tree, refugees-turned-residents going about lives no longer defined primarily by survival.

Ethan found himself, one particularly quiet afternoon, simply sitting and watching all of it unfold — the tea golem making its rounds with characteristic diligence, Suresh reviewing paperwork that had, for the first time in months, nothing to do with emergency logistics, Malachar and Halvorsen debating something that sounded, from a distance, suspiciously like an argument about which local restaurant made better food.

”This is what we were actually building toward this whole time,” he said, mostly to himself. ”Not the Watch. Not the trials. Not any of the cosmic stuff. Just — this. Ordinary. Boring, even, in the best possible way.”

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the courtyard’s quiet activity, would like to agree with this assessment.]

Ethan glanced up, tired but genuinely content. ”You’ve been quieter lately. Fewer emergency notifications.”

[NOTICE: The system has noticed the same pattern. It finds the change genuinely pleasant, though it admits to a small, lingering wariness — the accumulated instinct of an entire volume spent bracing for the next escalation.]

”Yeah,” Ethan admitted. ”I feel that too. Keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to offer, cautiously, that perhaps this time, it simply doesn’t have to.]

It was Sundari who finally raised, gently, the question that had been quietly forming in the back of Ethan’s mind for days.

”You’ve built something genuinely stable,” she said, finding him near the World Tree that evening. ”The Watch functions without requiring your constant presence. The Citadel’s thriving on its own rhythm. Even the recovering entities — Arjun, Candidate Zero, Kestrel, the remaining governing tier fragments — they’re healing, steadily, with support that doesn’t specifically require you standing over them every moment.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said slowly, sensing where this was heading.

”I think,” Sundari said carefully, ”you’ve reached the point where you genuinely get to decide what you actually want your life to look like, going forward. Not react to a crisis. Not simply maintain what’s already built. Actually decide, deliberately, what comes next.”

Ethan sat with that, feeling the weight of the question settle into something he hadn’t quite let himself fully consider yet.

”I think,” he said slowly, ”I want exactly what I wanted before any of this started. Naps. Tea. Peace and quiet. A bakery two streets over. People I actually care about, close by, safe.”

”That’s not a small thing to have earned,” Sundari said gently.

”No,” Ethan agreed, feeling something settle deep and genuine in his chest. ”I guess it’s not.”

[NOTICE: The system, quiet through most of this exchange, finally interjected, its tone carrying something warm and genuinely hopeful.]

”What,” Ethan said, glancing up.

[NOTICE: The system would like to note that the Watch’s council has scheduled its next formal session for three weeks from today — the first time, in this entire crisis, that no urgent business has required an earlier date.]

[NOTICE: It would also like to suggest, gently, that perhaps this represents an appropriate moment for something the subject has been quietly, consistently postponing since long before the Grinding even began.]

Ethan raised an eyebrow, curious despite himself. ”What’s that.”

[NOTICE: An actual celebration. Not a crisis debrief disguised as one. Genuine, uninterrupted festivity, for everyone who’s carried this story through to whatever comes next.]
