Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The peace, this time, lasted less than a day.

Ethan was halfway through a genuinely uneventful breakfast - eggs, toast, the golem hovering nearby with an air of cautious optimism - when Suresh appeared in the doorway of Room 404 with an expression that immediately killed whatever appetite remained.

”Reyla didn’t just walk away,” Suresh said. ”She regrouped. Fast. And she didn’t come back to the throne room this time.”

Ethan set down his fork. ”Where, then.”

”The Concord’s ratification ceremony,” Suresh said. ”The formal signing that finalizes the Watch’s charter across all six thousand Instances. It’s scheduled for this afternoon, remember? Reyla’s Sovereign Concord has announced they’re staging a counter-demonstration at the exact same time, in the exact same courtyard, with considerably more armed backup than they brought to the throne room.”

”She said she wasn’t planning further violence.”

”She lied,” Suresh said flatly. ”Or changed her mind. Either way, current estimate puts her forces at nearly two hundred, gathered from Instances that never fully accepted the vote. They’re not hiding it. They want everyone watching when they disrupt the ceremony.”

Ethan sat with that for a long moment, feeling something shift in his chest — not fear, not even the familiar weight of dread that usually accompanied these escalations, but something closer to plain, exhausted irritation.

”She had her chance to make her case honestly,” he said, standing. ”I offered her a seat at the table. She’s choosing to burn the table down instead, on the exact day we’re supposed to finally finish what we’ve spent weeks building.”

”What do you want to do,” Suresh asked.

Ethan looked at his half-eaten breakfast, at the golem still hopefully holding a fresh cup of tea, and felt the specific, particular annoyance of a man whose actual, hard-won morning was being ruined for the second time in twenty-four hours.

”I’m gonna go finish my breakfast,” he said. ”Then I’m gonna go stop this before it wastes anyone else’s afternoon either.”

The ceremony proceeded on schedule, delegates from across the network gathering in the courtyard in full formal regalia, the charter’s final draft prepared for signing, and Ethan arrived precisely on time, tea in hand, looking considerably less concerned than the situation apparently warranted.

Reyla’s forces had already begun massing at the courtyard’s eastern edge, armed, formation tight, clearly prepared for exactly the kind of confrontation Ethan had avoided escalating the day before.

”You came back,” Ethan said, approaching Reyla directly, unhurried, sipping his tea like he had nowhere particular to be.

”I told you this wasn’t over,” Reyla said, her scarred face set with grim determination. ”I intend to prove it, publicly, in front of every delegation watching.”

”You’re gonna disrupt a peaceful signing ceremony,” Ethan said, ”in front of the same six thousand Instances who already voted for this structure. You understand that even if you ’win’ whatever confrontation you’re planning, you’ve just demonstrated exactly the kind of unaccountable force everyone’s been afraid of. You’re not proving the Watch is weak. You’re proving why it exists.”

”Words are cheap,” Reyla said. ”Let’s see if the man behind them is actually as strong as the legend claims.”

Ethan sighed — the specific, familiar sigh he reserved for moments when patience had officially, finally run out.

”Okay,” he said. ”Fine. Let’s finish this properly, then, so I can actually get back to my tea.”

What followed lasted, by the system’s later official count, four seconds.

Ethan didn’t draw the Void Sword. He didn’t need to. He simply set his cup down on the low courtyard wall, exhaled once — carefully, controlled, mindful of the grain silo lesson he’d learned months earlier — and let the accumulated, effortless weight of everything he’d become since that first accidental exhale finally, briefly, show itself in full.

The pressure wave that rolled outward from him wasn’t violent. It didn’t hurt anyone, didn’t send bodies flying the way Kael Draven had once been sent. It simply, quietly, made two hundred armed hunters’ knees buckle beneath them, weapons clattering from suddenly nerveless hands, the sheer, incomprehensible scale of what they’d chosen to challenge finally, physically undeniable.

Reyla herself dropped to one knee, breathing hard, staring up at Ethan with something that had shifted, in an instant, from cold determination into genuine, unshakeable understanding.

”That’s it,” Ethan said quietly, standing over the assembled, kneeling formation with none of the triumphant cruelty the moment might have carried from someone else. ”That’s the whole gap between us. I didn’t even draw the sword. I’m not saying that to humiliate you. I’m saying it because I think you genuinely, honestly needed to feel it, once, to understand why force was never actually the argument you thought it was.”

Reyla, still kneeling, still catching her breath, looked up at him with an expression Ethan hadn’t expected — not defeat, exactly, but something closer to relief.

”I spent my whole life believing strength settles everything,” she said quietly. ”I think some part of me actually wanted to be proven wrong. I just needed it to happen decisively enough that I couldn’t keep pretending otherwise.”

The Sovereign Concord’s forces dispersed within the hour, no further violence required, the demonstration’s collapse serving as considerably more persuasive an argument than any of the Watch’s prior diplomatic efforts had managed against their particular brand of stubborn conviction.

The ratification ceremony proceeded that afternoon, delayed by barely thirty minutes, the charter’s final signing carrying, if anything, considerably more weight for the interruption it had just survived.

Ethan stood at the platform’s edge as delegation after delegation added their formal seal to the Watch’s founding document, feeling the accumulated weight of everything this volume had built finally, genuinely settling into something real and permanent.

Reyla, notably, remained for the ceremony, standing at the courtyard’s edge rather than departing with her forces, and when the final Instance added its seal, she stepped forward, unarmed, and requested, quietly, formal admission to the Concord as an independent observer — not yet a full member, but no longer an outside threat either.

”Prove me wrong properly,” she said, when Ethan asked why. ”The honest way, like you suggested. I’d rather do that from inside the room than outside it.”

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the ceremony’s successful conclusion, would like to formally note this milestone.]

Ethan, exhausted but genuinely, deeply satisfied, glanced up at the darkening evening sky above the courtyard. ”Go ahead.”

[NOTICE: The Watch’s founding charter has now been formally ratified by all six thousand two hundred and fourteen registered Instances, with an additional forty-nine Instances joining through subsequent crisis response, and Instance Zero — the original template world — lending its foundational authority directly to the structure.]

[NOTICE: This represents, by every metric the system can measure, the first genuinely stable, accountable, multiversal governing structure in this network’s entire recorded history.]

Ethan felt the words settle with a weight he hadn’t quite let himself anticipate, the exhausted culmination of weeks of impossible crises finally, genuinely arriving at something like an actual conclusion.

[NOTICE: The system would also like to raise something it detected during the ratification’s final moments — a transmission it did not expect, given everything that has already been resolved.]

Ethan tensed slightly, old habit dying hard. ”What now.”

[NOTICE: It is not a threat. It is, unexpectedly, a formal message from the deepest layer of the network’s own foundational architecture — the same voice the group encountered on the original world, days ago.]

[NOTICE: It reads simply: ”I have been watching everything that has happened since the Reset failed. I believe I finally understand something I did not understand before.”]
