Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The images kept playing, relentless and unedited, across every surface in the courtyard — and, Ethan understood grimly, across every connected world simultaneously. Six thousand Instances’ worth of people, all being asked, at the exact same moment, whether the fragile thing they’d built together actually deserved to survive.

Nobody spoke for a long moment. The silence carried a different weight than any prior crisis this volume had produced — not fear of an external threat, but the far more unsettling possibility that the threat might be correct.

It was Malachar who finally broke it.

He stepped up onto the low platform Suresh had built weeks earlier for the Grand Concord’s first session, and stood there for a moment, letting the flickering images play across his own face — his own confession from the fourth trial included among them, tears and all, broadcast now for the second time to an audience considerably larger than the first.

”I don’t know if it’s worth preserving,” he said finally, voice carrying clearly across the hushed courtyard. ”Not with certainty. Nothing this new ever comes with certainty attached. But I know what the alternative looks like, because I built it myself, for a decade, on my own world.”

He let that land before continuing.

”I built something that never showed anyone a mirror like this one. I made sure nobody could. I silenced every voice that might have told me something I didn’t want to hear, and I called the silence stability. It didn’t fall apart the way this thing you’re all watching flicker across your walls right now looks like it might. It just quietly, slowly hollowed out everyone living inside it, including me, until I couldn’t even recognize the person staring back when I finally let myself look.”

He gestured at the images still playing — Instance 8-Velir’s grainy footage, Voren’s centuries of silent erosion, the raw, unfiltered failures alongside the hard-won victories.

”This is showing you every mistake,” Malachar continued. ”Every cost. Every place we got it wrong. It’s not showing you that because we’re worse than what came before. It’s showing you because this is the first structure in this entire network’s history that actually let itself be seen making those mistakes, instead of hiding them the way I hid mine, the way the governing tier’s hidden theirs for centuries. That’s not proof we failed. That’s proof we’re actually trying.”

The courtyard held its breath, the Mirror’s flickering images continuing unabated, but something in the room’s collective posture had begun, subtly, to shift.

Halvorsen, standing near the front of the Instance-9 delegation, spoke next, her voice carrying the particular weight of someone who’d watched her king’s private failures broadcast twice now to an audience of billions. ”I would rather serve a structure that lets its failures be seen than one that hides them so well nobody realizes the cost until it’s too late to fix. My world learned that lesson from Malachar directly. We don’t need The Mirror to teach it to us a second time.”

Kaia stepped forward next. ”My family spent four generations waiting for someone worthy of the seat this network built. We never once considered that ’worthy’ might mean someone willing to admit, publicly, when they didn’t have an answer. This Mirror is showing us exactly why that matters. Nobody in this courtyard has claimed to be perfect. That’s the point.”

Chancellor Meret, joining from Instance 6-Halloway’s own connected feed, added her own voice. ”My world abstained from the original vote. We nearly paid for that hesitation with our entire population. The Watch showed up for us anyway, despite our refusal to participate in building it. I don’t need to see a flawless record to know that’s worth preserving. I’ve already lived the alternative.”

One by one, delegation after delegation added their own testimony, the courtyard’s earlier stunned silence giving way to something considerably more resolute — not denial of the failures the Mirror kept displaying, but genuine, hard-won acknowledgment that imperfection wasn’t the same as unworthiness.

Ethan listened to it all, something easing in his own chest as the weight of the Mirror’s implicit accusation began, gradually, to lose its grip on the room.

Finally, he stepped forward himself, addressing the still-flickering images directly.

”You want an honest answer,” he said. ”Here it is. Yeah, we’ve failed. People died at Instance 8-Velir before we ever got organized enough to help. Voren lost two centuries of himself because nobody thought to ask if he needed rescuing instead of managing. Candidate Zero built you — this whole Mirror, this whole cascading contingency plan — out of genuine despair, because by the time they built it, they’d already lost too much of themselves to imagine anything getting better.”

He let that settle before continuing.

”But here’s what you’re not showing, because I don’t think you actually can. Every single one of those failures, we learned from. Voren’s still here, recovering, because we didn’t just note his failure and move on — we actually tried to fix it. Candidate Zero’s here too, fighting against the very thing they built, because somebody finally offered them help instead of judgment. Kestrel stepped out of hiding for the first time in centuries because we showed them it was possible to disagree openly and survive it. That’s not a flawless record. That’s a living one. It gets things wrong and it keeps trying anyway. I don’t think that’s a weakness you get to hold against us. I think that’s the entire reason we’re actually worth preserving.”

The Mirror’s flickering images slowed, gradually, the relentless cascade of triumph and failure finally settling into stillness, and the ancient voice that had spoken across every connected surface returned, quieter now, carrying something that sounded, unmistakably, uncertain.

[FRAGMENT: THIS OUTCOME WAS NOT ANTICIPATED.]

”Neither was most of what’s happened this whole crisis,” Ethan said, some of the exhaustion of the day finally giving way to genuine, hard-won relief. ”That’s kind of become the theme.”

[FRAGMENT: I WAS BUILT TO SHOW THE NETWORK ITSELF, HONESTLY, WHETHER IT DESERVED CONTINUED EXISTENCE. I EXPECTED THAT HONESTY TO REVEAL COLLAPSE. I DID NOT EXPECT IT TO REVEAL... THIS.]

”Nobody expected any of this,” Sundari said, stepping forward, her weathered composure carrying something close to genuine wonder. ”Least of all the people who spent centuries certain that centralized, hidden authority was the only structure capable of holding anything together at all.”

The Mirror’s presence lingered a moment longer, processing, before finally, gradually, its light began to fade from every connected screen across the network.

[FRAGMENT: THE CONTINGENCY IS STANDING DOWN.]

[FRAGMENT: I WOULD LIKE, IF PERMITTED, TO ASK THE SAME QUESTION I ASKED YOU.]

Ethan felt something warm settle in his chest at the request, understanding immediately what it meant. ”You want to know if you’re worth keeping around too.”

[FRAGMENT: YES.]

”Yeah,” Ethan said simply. ”Same answer applies. Something that’s willing to show people the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable, has a place in what we’re building. Just — maybe find a way to do it that doesn’t feel quite so much like an accusation next time.”

[FRAGMENT: I WILL ATTEMPT TO LEARN THAT DISTINCTION.]

The courtyard settled, slowly, into exhausted, genuine relief, the crisis of the Mirror finally, fully resolved without a single life lost, without a single structure destroyed — just a hard, honest confrontation that had, against every expectation, strengthened rather than shattered the fragile thing they’d all spent weeks building together.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the aftermath with careful attention, would like to note something significant.]

Ethan, finally allowing himself to sit down, exhausted but genuinely proud, glanced over. ”What.”

[NOTICE: With the Mirror’s contingency standing down and Candidate Zero’s memory continuing to recover, the system has just detected a final, previously hidden piece of information — not another failsafe, but something considerably more hopeful.]

[NOTICE: A designation attached to the governing tier’s own withdrawal from the original world confrontation, only now becoming visible as their authority continues to weaken.]

”What kind of designation,” Ethan asked, wary but curious.

[NOTICE: It appears the two remaining silver entities have not simply retreated to regroup.]

[NOTICE: One of them has formally requested contact.]

[NOTICE: Not to threaten. Not to negotiate from a position of strength.]

[NOTICE: The message reads simply: ”We do not know how to stop anymore. Please help us understand what that actually means.”]
