Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The planning, once it started, took on a life entirely its own — Suresh, predictably, treating ”genuine, uninterrupted festivity” with the same methodical rigor he applied to emergency logistics, right up until Priya physically confiscated his clipboard and told him, not unkindly, that a party wasn’t supposed to have a runsheet.

”It doesn’t need coordination,” she said. ”It needs food, music, and everyone we care about in one place, not currently fighting for their lives.”

”That last part’s the part I keep double-checking,” Suresh admitted, though he let the clipboard go.

The date settled itself naturally — the evening before the Watch’s next scheduled council session, giving every delegation that wanted to attend a reason to already be present at the Citadel without needing a separate journey. Word spread fast, and by the time the actual evening arrived, the courtyard had transformed into something Ethan hadn’t quite seen before in this entire story: full, warm, loud, and entirely, blessedly without stakes.

Meenakshi closed the bakery for the day specifically so she could bring everything to the courtyard instead, an entire table groaning under trays of pastries that had, over the months, become something of a diplomatic institution across dozens of worlds. Delegates who’d once argued fiercely over charter language now argued, with equal passion, over whether the cardamom buns or the coconut ones deserved to be finished first.

The tea golem, given free rein and, for once, no emergency to interrupt it, outdid itself completely — an entire spread of tea varieties Ethan hadn’t even known it had learned to make, alongside something that could generously be called a cake, decorated, in careful brass-claw handwriting, with something that read, unmistakably, CONGRATULATIONS ON NOT DYING.

”That’s either the most heartfelt thing it’s ever made,” Kael said, staring at the cake, ”or the most passive-aggressive.”

”With that thing, it’s usually both,” Ethan said, grinning.

Malachar and Halvorsen arrived with a contingent from Instance-9 bringing their own contribution — some kind of spiced, layered dish that turned out to be a considerable hit, and Malachar himself, dressed down from his usual composed formality, spent the better part of the evening laughing more freely than Ethan had ever witnessed from him.

”I don’t think I’ve properly celebrated anything in over a decade,” he admitted, watching Halvorsen dance, badly and enthusiastically, with a cluster of Citadel residents who’d long since stopped treating either of them as visiting royalty and started treating them, simply, as neighbors. ”I forgot what it actually felt like.”

”You should do it more,” Ethan said. ”I think you’ve earned considerably more than one night of it.”

Kaia arrived with a full Threshold Accord delegation, her own quiet, careful composure finally, fully relaxed into something genuinely joyful — four generations of careful, patient waiting resolving, at last, into an evening where nothing at all was required of her except enjoyment.

”My grandmother would have loved this,” she said, watching the courtyard’s warm chaos unfold. ”She spent her whole life imagining what it might look like, the day the waiting finally ended. I don’t think even she imagined it would look this ordinary. This happy.”

Sundari and Arjun arrived together, and Ethan watched, quietly moved, as the two of them — centuries of shared history, grief, and hard-won reconciliation between them — simply sat, side by side, sharing tea, sharing quiet conversation, sharing an evening that carried none of the desperate urgency their earlier reunion had demanded.

Candidate Zero’s presence joined too, carefully, tentatively, manifesting through a small, careful projection the system had helped arrange — still recovering, still fragile in ways that would take considerably longer to fully heal, but present, genuinely, for the first time at something that wasn’t a crisis or a negotiation.

”I did not expect to ever attend something like this,” they admitted quietly, watching the courtyard’s warmth with something like wonder. ”I had forgotten such things still existed.”

”They do,” Ethan said, settling beside the projection. ”You’re welcome here, whenever you’re ready for more of it.”

Kestrel, steadier now, joined them soon after, and the small circle — Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, Candidate Zero, Kestrel — sat together for a long while, the weight of everything they’d all survived finally, genuinely settling into something like peace.

Reyla arrived later in the evening, notably without her usual guarded formality, and found Ethan near the courtyard’s edge, watching the whole gathering unfold with a tired, genuine contentment.

”I wasn’t sure I’d be welcome,” she admitted.

”You’re part of this now,” Ethan said simply. ”Same as everyone else here. Grab some food. The cardamom buns are apparently winning, if you want an opinion on that particular ongoing debate.”

She managed a small, genuine smile — the first Ethan had seen from her — and moved toward the crowd with something that looked, unmistakably, like relief at finally being allowed to simply belong somewhere instead of constantly proving herself.

It was well past midnight, the courtyard’s energy settling into something quieter, warmer, when Ethan finally found himself alone for a moment, sitting on the same low wall he’d occupied through so much of this crisis, watching the gathered celebration continue without needing his active participation to sustain it.

Suresh joined him, two cups of tea in hand, offering one without a word.

”You did good,” Suresh said simply, watching the courtyard.

”We did good,” Ethan corrected. ”All of us. I keep having to relearn that lesson, apparently.”

”Apparently,” Suresh agreed, a faint, genuine smile crossing his face.

They sat together in comfortable silence for a while, watching Kael and Ren dance badly and happily near the World Tree, watching Malachar laugh at something Halvorsen said, watching the tea golem roll proud circles around its congratulations cake, watching an entire courtyard full of people — refugees, delegates, former enemies, recovering ancient entities, ordinary residents — simply exist together, unburdened, for one genuine evening.

[NOTICE: The system, quiet for most of the celebration, finally interjected, its tone carrying warmth Ethan had rarely heard from it before.]

”What,” Ethan said, not looking away from the courtyard.

[NOTICE: The system would like to formally log this evening as the first genuine, uninterrupted celebration in its entire operational history — no emergency notifications, no lurking countdown, no crisis waiting to interrupt.]

[NOTICE: It would like to note, simply, that this is what it always hoped things might eventually look like, back when it first described itself as broken, deprecated, not supposed to exist.]

Ethan felt something warm and quietly proud settle in his chest, watching the courtyard’s contented chaos continue around him.

”You were never actually broken,” he said softly. ”Just — waiting for the right moment to prove it.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to say the same about the subject.]

Ethan managed a tired, genuine laugh, raising his cup slightly toward the courtyard’s warm, ordinary noise.

”Yeah,” he said. ”I think we both finally got there.”
