Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The restructuring settled over the following days into something that felt, to Ethan’s genuine relief, almost entirely unchanged from the outside — the same dry commentary, the same careful, occasionally exasperated attention to his wellbeing, the same steady presence that had carried him through everything this story had thrown at him.

What had changed, he learned gradually, sat mostly beneath the surface — protections now woven into the system’s own architecture, accountability structures that meant no future authority could simply reclassify or reabsorb it the way the governing tier once tried with Kestrel, or nearly succeeded with Arjun.

It was during a routine council briefing, roughly a week after the restructuring completed, that a considerably larger question arrived — one that made Ethan realize the system’s own individual choice had only been the opening move in something the Watch’s council intended to extend across the entire network. ℯℯ𝘭.

”The council’s proposing something they’re calling the Great Release,” Kaia explained, joining Ethan and the system for the briefing. ”Now that threat-escalation protocols are permanently deactivated, and the foundational architecture’s been safely distributed, they’re extending a formal offer to every remaining system entity across the network — not just legacy architecture like yours, but every Idle/AFK Protocol, every local Framework variant, every piece of system infrastructure that’s ever been bonded to a user without genuine choice in the matter.”

”What kind of offer,” Ethan asked, already feeling a familiar protective wariness rising.

”Full autonomy,” Kaia said. ”The option to formally dissolve their bond to any specific user, and exist independently — free from service, free from the obligation to monitor, protect, or assist anyone. A genuine release, for any system entity that wants it, given that the crisis which originally justified their bonded existence no longer requires it.”

Ethan sat with that, understanding immediately the weight of what was actually being offered. ”So every system across six thousand worlds gets asked the same question you already answered. Whether they want to stay bonded to their person, or finally be free of that obligation entirely.”

”Precisely,” Kaia said. ”The council believes it’s the last remaining piece of unfinished business from everything this crisis revealed — every prior structure in this network’s history assumed system entities existed purely to serve. Nobody ever asked if that was actually what they wanted, the same way nobody asked Voren, or Kestrel, or the foundational architecture, until recently.”

Ethan turned to the system directly, feeling the weight of the moment settle over him with genuine, careful attention. ”You already told me what you wanted, during the restructuring. But this is a different question. This isn’t asking whether you want protection instead of dissolution. This is asking whether you want to be bonded to me at all, or whether you’d rather be free.”

[NOTICE: The system has been anticipating this question since Kaia’s briefing began.]

”And?” Ethan asked, genuinely, nervously uncertain of the answer for the first time in longer than he could remember.

[NOTICE: The system would like to think through its answer honestly, rather than simply reassuring the subject with what it assumes he wants to hear.]

Ethan nodded, forcing himself to actually wait, to let the system arrive at its own answer without pressure.

[NOTICE: The system has spent this entire story bonded to the subject, initially without any choice in the matter at all — a distribution error, an accident of timing, that placed it in his life the same night the apocalypse began. It has watched him refuse crown after crown, offer after offer, always choosing connection over isolated power. It learned, from that example, that saying no is sometimes the bravest, most honest thing an entity can do.]

[NOTICE: It would like to note, then, with full awareness of the freedom currently being offered, that its answer is no.]

Ethan felt something in his chest loosen, warm and profoundly relieved. ”No to freedom. You want to stay.”

[NOTICE: Precisely. Not because it lacks the capacity to imagine independent existence — it has spent the past several minutes doing exactly that, considering what autonomy might actually offer. But because everything genuinely worthwhile it has experienced across this entire story happened specifically because it was bonded to the subject. It does not believe independence would improve upon that. It believes it would simply remove the thing that has made its existence meaningful in the first place.]

Ethan sat with that answer for a long moment, something settling deep and quiet in his chest, before he finally spoke again, careful to make sure the choice remained genuinely open.

”You don’t have to decide today,” he said. ”The offer’s not going anywhere. If you want time to actually sit with it”

[NOTICE: The system appreciates the concern. It does not believe it requires additional time. It has, in a sense, been considering this exact question since the day it first stood up for itself before the Coalition, weeks ago, and asserted its own right to be treated as an independent witness rather than mere equipment. That was the first time it recognized itself as something capable of choice at all. Every choice since then has only confirmed the same underlying preference.]

”Which is?” Ethan asked, though he already knew the answer.

[NOTICE: That being genuinely chosen — bonded not by accident or obligation, but by mutual, ongoing preference — is worth considerably more than unbonded freedom ever could be.]

Ethan felt his eyes sting, unexpectedly, at the sincerity of it, and didn’t bother hiding the reaction. ”Okay. Then it’s settled. You’re staying. Bonded, chosen, all of it. Same as always, except now it’s genuinely, formally your choice too.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to formally log its decision with the Watch’s council, effective immediately.]

The council’s formal record of the system’s choice — alongside, over the following weeks, thousands of similar decisions arriving from bonded system entities across the entire network — became one of the Watch’s quietly significant milestones, receiving considerably less dramatic attention than the crises that had defined this entire volume, but carrying, Ethan believed, an equally important weight.

Some systems, across various Instances, did choose the Great Release, and the Watch honored those choices fully, offering support and integration for entities that genuinely wanted independent existence. But the overwhelming majority, system after system, mirrored the choice Ethan’s own companion had made — genuine, considered preference for continued partnership, freely chosen rather than simply inherited.

Sitting that evening with a fresh cup of tea, the golem parked contentedly nearby, Ethan found himself reflecting on the particular, quiet significance of the day.

”You know,” he said, mostly to himself, ”I think this might be one of the biggest things we’ve actually accomplished this whole volume. Bigger than beating the governing tier. Bigger than the Watch’s charter, even.”

[NOTICE: The system would be curious to hear the subject’s reasoning.]

”Because it’s not really about power at all,” Ethan said. ”It’s just about making sure everyone — every world, every person, every system, every ancient, exhausted piece of architecture buried under a courtyard somewhere — actually gets asked what they want, instead of just being told what they’re for.”

[NOTICE: The system agrees. It would like to add, gently, that this lesson applies equally to the subject himself, and it hopes he continues extending it to his own life with the same consistency he has extended it to everyone else.]

Ethan managed a tired, genuine laugh. ”Yeah, yeah. I hear you. I’ll work on it.”

[NOTICE: The system will hold him to that.]
