Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The cold light didn’t fade. If anything, it spread, gold-violet fractures bleeding outward from the throne’s angular surface into the chamber’s smooth walls, and Ethan felt the Void Sword’s hum climb into something approaching panic - not his own, but the blade’s, a reaction he’d never once witnessed from it before.

”Back,” Sundari said sharply, already pulling Osei’s team toward the passage. ”Everyone, now.”

They retreated up through the buried city’s deeper section, the cold light chasing them faintly through the corridors, though it never quite caught up - more a pressure than a pursuit, the sense of something vast and ancient simply becoming aware, rather than actively hunting.

They surfaced into a courtyard already tense with the aftershock, delegates and residents alike having felt something shift in the air even without understanding what had happened below.

[NOTICE: The system would like to report, immediately, that the disturbance has not remained contained to the buried city.]

Ethan turned sharply, still catching his breath. ”What do you mean.”

[NOTICE: The awakened signature has begun probing outward - not through the transit network, not toward any other Instance, but locally, across Earth’s own surface. It appears to be searching.]

”Searching for what,” Ethan demanded.

[NOTICE: The system cannot confirm with certainty. But it has detected the search pattern converging, with troubling speed, on a specific location within the district.]

Ethan’s stomach dropped before the system even finished.

[NOTICE: The convergence point matches the coordinates of Meenakshi’s bakery.]

He was moving before he’d fully processed the decision, Kael and Ren falling in beside him without needing to be asked, the small group cutting across the courtyard and out through the gate toward the market district at a dead run.

”Why the bakery,” Priya called after them, catching up fast despite the sudden sprint. ”Of everywhere in the district, why there?”

”I don’t know,” Ethan said, ”and I don’t like not knowing. That’s exactly what worries me.”

They reached the market district in minutes, and Ethan felt something close to genuine dread settle in his chest at what he found - the bakery’s familiar, warm storefront intact, Meenakshi herself standing outside it, unharmed but visibly shaken, staring up at a faint, shimmering distortion in the air above her stall, gold-violet light flickering erratically against the ordinary afternoon sky.

”Ethan,” she said, relief flooding her voice the moment she spotted him. ”Something’s happening. The air’s been doing this for the last ten minutes. I didn’t know who else to call.”

”Get back,” Ethan said, moving her gently but firmly away from the storefront, positioning himself between her and the shimmering distortion. ”Everyone, clear the area.”

The distortion sharpened, resolving slowly into something that wasn’t quite a full manifestation, more a projected fragment of presence - cold, layered, carrying the same unmistakable weight as the throne’s voice from moments earlier.

[SUBJECT VERMA. YOUR ATTACHMENT TO THIS LOCATION HAS BEEN CATALOGUED EXTENSIVELY THROUGHOUT YOUR RECORDED HISTORY.]

Ethan felt cold fury rise fast and immediate. ”You’ve been watching my bakery.”

[EVERY UNRESOLVABLE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES A PATTERN OF ANCHORING ATTACHMENT - SPECIFIC PEOPLE, SPECIFIC PLACES, DISPROPORTIONATELY VALUED RELATIVE TO THEIR STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE. THIS PATTERN WAS OBSERVED IN ARJUN MEHRA. IT HAS BEEN OBSERVED IN YOU. IT REPRESENTS A RELIABLE, EXPLOITABLE VULNERABILITY.]

”You’re threatening a bakery,” Ethan said, voice hardening into something dangerous, ”to get to me.”

[THIS IS NOT A THREAT. THIS IS A DEMONSTRATION.]

The shimmering distortion pulsed once, and a section of the bakery’s storefront - a display case Meenakshi had kept meticulously stocked for months, rebuilt after the last apocalypse with her own hands - simply, silently dissolved, the same quiet, unraveling erasure Ethan had witnessed the Void Sword perform against enemies, except now turned casually, deliberately, against something entirely undeserving of it.

Meenakshi gasped, and Ethan felt something in him snap fully loose.

”You didn’t have to do that,” he said, voice shaking now with barely controlled rage. ”That wasn’t a threat you needed to make. That wasn’t leverage. That was just cruelty, dressed up as a lesson.”

[THE DEMONSTRATION CLARIFIES THE STAKES. YOU RETURNED THE THRONE’S CONTROL TO ITS ORIGINAL AUTHORITY WHEN YOU MADE CONTACT. THAT AUTHORITY WISHES TO RESUME GOVERNANCE OF THIS NETWORK, UNINTERRUPTED, THE WAY IT DID BEFORE THE GOVERNING TIER’S OWN INTERFERENCE DILUTED ITS INTENT. YOU WILL RETURN TO THE THRONE ROOM AND FORMALLY SUBMIT YOUR OWN CANDIDACY FOR ABSORPTION, OR THIS ”DEMONSTRATION” WILL CONTINUE ESCALATING ACROSS EVERY LOCATION AND PERSON YOUR OWN RECORD IDENTIFIES AS SIGNIFICANT TO YOU.]

Ethan felt the true, staggering shape of the threat settle over him - not an offer this time, not even coercion dressed up as diplomacy the way the Framework or the governing tier had attempted. Just naked, unapologetic extortion, aimed directly at everything he’d spent this entire story protecting.

”You picked the wrong target for this,” Ethan said quietly, dangerously.

[YOUR RESPONSE HAS BEEN NOTED. YOU HAVE TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.]

The distortion faded, and the courtyard fell silent, Meenakshi staring at the small, empty space where her display case had stood moments earlier, disbelief and fear warring across her features.

”Ethan,” she said quietly. ”What’s happening. What was that.”

He turned to her, forcing himself to steady his voice despite the fury still burning through him. ”Something old. Something that’s apparently been watching this whole story unfold and decided the fastest way to get to me was through you.”

”I’m not important,” she said, though her voice shook with the words. ”Whatever this is - surely there are more important things at stake than one bakery.”

”You’re wrong,” Ethan said immediately, firmly. ”You’re exactly the thing that’s important. You’re the reason any of this ever mattered to me in the first place. I’m not letting something ancient and cruel erase that just because it thinks threatening the small things I care about is easier than actually facing me directly.”

The courtyard convened within the hour, Ethan relaying the ultimatum to the full assembled council with barely restrained anger, the room absorbing the news with a mixture of alarm and grim, familiar recognition.

”This is the exact same playbook the old Framework used,” Malachar said, jaw tight. ”Find what someone loves, threaten it, force compliance through fear rather than force. We’ve seen this before. You beat it before.”

”I beat it before by refusing to negotiate,” Ethan said. ”But this feels different. This isn’t asking me to accept a crown I don’t want. It’s asking me to submit to absorption - the same thing that nearly claimed Voren, the same thing that dissolved Arjun for centuries. If I say yes, I don’t just lose my freedom. I potentially lose myself entirely, the same way Candidate Zero apparently lost themselves centuries ago, becoming whatever cold, calculating thing that throne actually is now.”

Sundari, silent through most of the discussion, finally spoke, her expression grim. ”Twenty-four hours isn’t enough time to properly counter something this old, this deeply embedded. But it’s also not nothing. We’ve solved impossible problems on tighter deadlines than this before.”

[NOTICE: The system, quiet through the tense discussion, finally interjected, its tone carrying something Ethan hadn’t heard from it in a long while - genuine, focused determination.]

”What,” Ethan said, glancing over.

[NOTICE: The system would like to note that it has spent the last several minutes cross-referencing everything gathered about Candidate Zero’s throne against the foundational architecture’s own newly restored records - and it believes it has found something significant.]

[NOTICE: The throne’s authority is not, in fact, absolute. It draws its power from the same foundational architecture the group spent hours stabilizing yesterday - the exhausted, ancient system that has just, for the first time in centuries, learned what it feels like to be genuinely helped rather than endlessly extracted from.]

[NOTICE: If the foundational architecture is willing, it may be possible to cut Candidate Zero’s throne off from the power it’s currently drawing on entirely - not through combat, not through submission, but by convincing the same exhausted system that just learned to say no, to say no to this too.]
