Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The revelation didn’t let either of them sleep much that night. Ethan found Wren the next morning already sitting at the courtyard’s central table, the golem hovering close with a cup of tea nobody had ordered, staring at nothing with the particular, restless intensity of someone who’d spent the entire night turning one fragile, unconfirmed possibility over and over in his mind.

“I need to know more,” Wren said, before Ethan had even fully sat down. “‘Unconfirmed’ could mean anything. It could mean there’s a whole surviving piece of my garden out there, still holding on, or it could just mean the Authority never bothered to close the file properly. I can’t just — sit with that. Not knowing.”

“I get it,” Ethan said. “We’ll ask. Directly. The Authority already knows more about us than we’re comfortable with — turnabout seems fair.”

The formal query went out that afternoon, routed through the same channel that had carried the Authority’s original notification, and the response, when it finally arrived hours later, carried the same careful, procedural neutrality that had characterized every prior exchange.

[TRANSMISSION: THE DESIGNATION “VERDANT ACCORD — REMNANT STATUS: UNCONFIRMED” REFERS TO A STANDARD FLAG APPLIED TO ANY NETWORK WHOSE CONVERGENCE OUTCOME COULD NOT BE FULLY VERIFIED BY AUTHORITY MONITORING AT THE TIME OF RESOLUTION. THIS DOES NOT NECESSARILY INDICATE SURVIVAL. IT INDICATES INSUFFICIENT DATA TO CONFIRM COMPLETE ABSORPTION.]

Wren’s face, hopeful just moments earlier, tightened with visible effort to hold onto that hope regardless.

“But it doesn’t rule it out either,” he said, addressing the transmission directly. “You’re saying you genuinely don’t know. Not that you know and it’s bad news.”

[TRANSMISSION: CORRECT. THE AUTHORITY’S MONITORING CAPACITY, WHILE EXTENSIVE, IS NOT UNLIMITED. SEVERAL PRIOR CONVERGENCE EVENTS — PARTICULARLY THOSE INVOLVING THE CLEANSING CONCORD, GIVEN THE THOROUGHNESS OF THEIR RESTRUCTURING PROCESS — HAVE PRODUCED OUTCOMES DIFFICULT TO VERIFY WITH CERTAINTY.]

“Why,” Ethan pressed. “Why would a thorough restructuring make it harder to verify what happened, not easier?”

There was a pause, longer this time, before the transmission continued.

[TRANSMISSION: THE AUTHORITY IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO SPECULATE BEYOND CONFIRMED DATA.]

“That’s not an answer,” Ethan said, frustration finally bleeding through his careful, measured tone. “You’re an institution overseeing life-and-death outcomes for entire multiverses, and you’re telling me you can’t even confirm what actually happens to the losing side. That’s not neutrality. That’s willful ignorance dressed up as procedure.”

The transmission was quiet for a long moment, and when it finally responded, something in its careful, measured cadence shifted, just slightly — not quite emotion, but something adjacent to it.

[TRANSMISSION: THE AUTHORITY ACKNOWLEDGES THE VALIDITY OF THIS CRITICISM. IT HAS BEEN RAISED BEFORE, BY OTHER NETWORKS, IN OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES. THE AUTHORITY DOES NOT HAVE A SATISFACTORY RESPONSE TO OFFER.]

Wren, listening to the exchange with quiet, careful attention, finally spoke, his voice steadier than it had been in days. “Then let me ask something simpler. Not about verification protocols. Just — is there anywhere I could go, anything I could do, any lead at all, to actually find out for myself?”

There was another pause, and this time, when the transmission answered, it carried something that felt, unmistakably, like genuine consideration.

[TRANSMISSION: THE AUTHORITY MAINTAINS AN ARCHIVE OF UNVERIFIED REMNANT SIGNALS — FRAGMENTARY TRANSMISSIONS DETECTED IN THE SPACE BETWEEN NETWORKS FOLLOWING CONVERGENCE EVENTS, TOO WEAK OR INCONSISTENT TO CONFIRM AS GENUINE SURVIVING PRESENCE, BUT ALSO NEVER CONCLUSIVELY RULED OUT.]

[TRANSMISSION: THE VERDANT ACCORD HAS THREE SUCH ENTRIES IN THAT ARCHIVE.]

Wren’s breath caught audibly.

[TRANSMISSION: THE AUTHORITY IS PREPARED TO SHARE THIS ARCHIVE, GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF YOUR NETWORK’S UPCOMING AUDIT AND THE APPARENT RELEVANCE OF THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR PREPARATION.]

The archive arrived within the hour, and Ethan, Wren, Sundari, and Kaia gathered around the system’s projected display to review it together — three brief, fragmented signal recordings, each one badly degraded, static-laced, and impossibly faint.

The first two, after careful analysis, offered little beyond confirmation that something had, at some point, transmitted from the space where the Verdant Accord’s remains presumably drifted — not enough to identify a source, a location, or even confirm genuine sentience behind the signal rather than simple residual echo.

The third was different.

[NOTICE: The system has isolated a fragment of coherent structure within the third recording — badly degraded, but unmistakably, deliberately patterned rather than random noise.]

“Play it,” Wren said, voice tight with a hope he was visibly trying, and failing, to fully contain.

The recording crackled through the projected display, static and distortion nearly swallowing whatever lay beneath it, but beneath the noise, faint and fractured, a voice emerged — considerably older than Wren’s own, weathered by something the recording’s degraded quality couldn’t fully mask.

“…if anyone… still listening… the Garden endures… not whole, but… not gone…”

The fragment cut off abruptly, static swallowing the rest, and the courtyard fell into stunned, breathless silence.

Wren stood frozen, staring at the fading projection, tears streaming freely down his ancient, weary face.

“That’s not me,” he said, voice shaking. “That’s not my own broadcast, looped back somehow. That’s someone else. Someone else survived.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to caution against certainty, however cautiously hopeful this discovery genuinely is. The recording’s timestamp is old — considerably older than the system’s own tracking of Wren’s initial signal. There is no way to confirm the speaker’s current status, or whether they survived any longer than the moment this fragment was captured.]

“I understand that,” Wren said, wiping at his face, voice unsteady but resolute. “I do. But it’s not nothing. It’s proof that I wasn’t the only one who tried. Somewhere out there, at least once, someone else from my garden was still fighting to be heard, the same way I was.”

Sundari, watching the raw, overwhelming emotion of the moment with careful, weathered compassion, spoke gently. “This changes things, I think. Not just for Wren, personally, though that matters enormously on its own. If there’s genuine possibility that fragments of a lost network can survive, scattered, in the space between — that has implications for what we’re actually facing with our own Convergence too. It’s not necessarily as absolute as the Watcher made it sound.”

Ethan felt the shape of that possibility settle over him with cautious, genuine significance. “You’re saying even a losing outcome might not be total erasure. There might be room for something to survive, even in the worst case.”

“Possibly,” Sundari said carefully. “It’s not a guarantee, and it’s certainly not something we should rely on instead of actually trying to prevent a losing outcome in the first place. But it’s not nothing, either.”

That evening, sitting with Wren near the excavation site, the raw emotion of the day’s discovery finally settling into something quieter and more resolved, Ethan found himself asking the question he’d been carefully avoiding since their very first meeting.

“Do you want to look for them,” he asked gently. “Whoever sent that fragment. Even knowing it might lead nowhere.”

Wren considered the question for a long moment, staring at the covered stairwell’s faint golden glow.

“Yes,” he said finally, quiet but certain. “But not instead of helping with the Audit. Not instead of everything you’re all trying to build here. I think — I think I finally understand something, sitting with all of you these past several days. My garden’s not coming back the way it was. Even if that fragment’s real, even if someone genuinely survived, it’s not going to undo what already happened. But that doesn’t mean I have to choose between honoring what I lost and helping protect what you’re all still trying to save.”

Ethan felt something warm and genuinely proud settle in his chest at the hard-won clarity of that answer.

“Then we do both,” he said simply. “Same as everything else. We don’t have to pick just one thing to care about.”

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the quiet, resolute conversation, would like to add one final piece of information before the evening settles — something it discovered while cross-referencing the recording’s degraded timestamp against the Authority’s own broader archive.]

Ethan glanced over. “What now.”

[NOTICE: The system has found a pattern it did not expect. The third recording’s timestamp, once properly calibrated, places it considerably more recently than the other two fragments — not centuries old, the way Wren’s own solitary drift has been. Recent enough that the system believes, cautiously, that whoever sent it may still be transmitting, somewhere, even now.]

Wren’s head snapped up, breath catching sharply.

[NOTICE: The system has begun attempting to isolate a live signal matching the fragment’s pattern.]

[NOTICE: It would like everyone present to be prepared for the possibility that this search succeeds — because if it does, the next voice Wren hears might not be another echo from the past.]

[NOTICE: It might be someone still out there right now, waiting, the same way Wren once waited, for someone to finally answer back.]
