Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Wren didn’t sleep that night. Ethan learned this the next morning from Suresh, who reported it with the particular, weary gentleness of a man who’d been quietly checking in on new arrivals for months now and had developed a good instinct for exactly this kind of fragile, overwhelmed aftermath.

”He was sitting by the excavation site at dawn,” Suresh said. ”Just staring at nothing. I offered to sit with him. He said he needed to be alone with it for a while.”

Ethan found him there an hour later, exactly where Suresh had described, small and ancient and hollowed out by the previous evening’s revelation, staring at the covered stairwell’s faint golden glow without really seeing it.

”Hey,” Ethan said, settling down beside him without ceremony.

Wren didn’t answer immediately. When he finally spoke, his voice was thin, worn down by a sleepless night of turning the same terrible thought over and over.

”I’ve been telling myself for however long I’ve existed out there that the Cleansing Concord were monsters,” he said. ”Just — monsters, doing monstrous things, and my garden was innocent, and that was the whole story. It was easier that way. Simpler. I didn’t have to think about what actually happened to them, before they became what they are now.”

”And now you’re not sure that story’s the whole truth,” Ethan said gently.

”No,” Wren admitted. ”Because if the archive’s right — if there’s a ’tide’ that came before the Concord, something that destroyed enough of them that they decided cleansing anomalies before they could grow was the only way to survive it — then they’re not just monsters. They’re survivors who made an unforgivable choice, and I don’t know what to do with that. It’s harder to hate someone once you understand why they broke.”

Ethan sat with that for a long moment, recognizing the shape of it — the same difficult, complicated compassion he’d had to extend to Malachar, to Vail before he’d even met her, to every single entity this entire crisis kept forcing him to understand rather than simply fight.

”I don’t think you have to decide that today,” he said finally. ”Or even this week. But I don’t think sitting out here alone with it, unfed and exhausted, is actually helping you think any more clearly either.”

Wren managed a small, humorless huff. ”Is this the part where you offer me breakfast?”

”It’s absolutely the part where I offer you breakfast,” Ethan confirmed, already standing and offering a hand down to him. ”It’s worked on literally everyone else in this story who’s ever had a genuinely terrible night. I don’t see why you’d be the exception.”

The golem, apparently having anticipated exactly this outcome with the particular, uncanny instinct it always seemed to develop around anyone it had decided to adopt, had already assembled an elaborate spread by the time Ethan and Wren reached the courtyard’s small kitchen table — considerably more food than either of them could reasonably finish, arranged with the same careful, hopeful precision it had once brought to Malachar’s first, wary morning at the Citadel.

Wren stared at the spread for a long moment, something in his exhausted, hollowed-out composure finally, quietly cracking.

”It did all this because I had a bad night,” he said, voice unsteady.

”Yeah,” Ethan said, settling into his own chair. ”That’s kind of its whole thing. You’ll get used to it. Or you won’t, and it’ll just keep doing it anyway until you do.”

Wren sat down slowly, and for a while, they ate in comfortable, undemanding silence — no pressure to talk about the Cleansing Concord, no urgency about the mysterious presence at the boundary, just the simple, grounding ritual of a shared meal, the same one that had carried Ethan through every crisis this story had ever thrown at him.

It was Wren, finally, who broke the silence, though not with the heavy questions Ethan had half-expected.

”Does it always taste this good,” he asked, genuinely curious, gesturing at the food, ”or am I just that starved for it?”

Ethan laughed, warm and genuine. ”Bit of both, probably. But no, it’s actually really good. Best thing that’s ever happened to this apartment, honestly, that golem.”

Wren managed a small, real smile — the first Ethan had properly seen from him — and something in the tension of the morning finally, gradually eased.

They spent the rest of the morning simply existing together, Ethan showing Wren around the parts of the Citadel he hadn’t yet properly seen — the bakery, where Meenakshi greeted him with the same warm, unbothered familiarity she extended to everyone, apocalypse or crisis or ancient cosmic trauma notwithstanding; the training grounds, where Kael and Ren were running a session that Wren watched with quiet, careful interest; the World Tree, whose steady, patient presence seemed to genuinely calm something in him the longer he sat beneath it.

”It’s strange,” Wren said, sitting in the tree’s dappled shade that afternoon. ”I keep waiting for something to go wrong. For someone to tell me this isn’t real, or that I have to earn it somehow, or that there’s a catch I haven’t found yet.”

”There isn’t one,” Ethan said simply. ”I know that’s probably hard to believe, given everything you’ve survived. But there genuinely isn’t a catch. You’re here because you’re welcome here. That’s the whole arrangement.”

Wren sat with that for a long moment, something working behind his ancient, careful eyes.

”I want to help,” he said finally. ”With whatever’s actually coming. Not just tell you the parts I’m ready to share and hide from the rest. I want to actually be useful, the way everyone else here seems to be useful to each other.”

”You don’t have to earn your place by being useful,” Ethan said gently. ”But if you genuinely want to help, when you’re ready, I’m not gonna stop you. Just — on your own timeline. Not because we’re pushing.”

It was that evening, over dinner with the full, gathered circle — Suresh, Malachar, Sundari, Kael, Ren, Kaia, and Wren himself, finally, tentatively part of the group rather than simply observing it — that Wren raised the topic himself, unprompted, his voice steadier now than it had been at dawn.

”I want to tell you something else,” he said, addressing the table generally. ”Not the whole story. I’m still not ready for that. But something that might actually help, given what we’re facing.”

Everyone’s attention settled on him, careful and patient, and Wren took a breath before continuing.

”The ’tide’ the archive mentioned,” he said. ”I don’t know exactly what it is. But I remember, from before — from when my garden was still whole — there were old stories, myths my people told, about something that lived in the space between gardens. Something patient. Something that fed on what got left behind when a Convergence went badly enough.”

The table went very quiet, the weight of the previous night’s mysterious boundary presence settling over the meal with fresh, unsettling clarity.

”You think that’s what’s out there,” Ethan said slowly. ”Watching us. The same thing that consumed whatever was left of your garden after the actual fighting stopped.”

”I think it’s possible,” Wren said. ”I don’t know for certain. But if it’s true, then the Cleansing Concord isn’t just fighting other networks because they believe it’s the only way to survive Convergence. They might be fighting because they’re terrified of what happens to whatever’s left behind, either way.”

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the conversation closely, would like to add a relevant piece of information it has been holding since the previous evening.]

Ethan glanced over, bracing for whatever came next. ”Go ahead.”

[NOTICE: While cross-referencing the Threshold Accord’s archive fragment against every other available source, the system found a second, considerably more corrupted entry — attached, unmistakably, to the same folklore category, but originating from an entirely different, unrelated source than Kaia’s own family records.]

”Where from,” Ethan asked.

[NOTICE: It appears embedded in the deepest layer of the original world’s own foundational memory — the same source that revealed Candidate Zero’s earliest knowledge of Convergence. The fragment is badly degraded, but the system has managed to recover a single, coherent phrase.]

Wren went very still, sensing, correctly, that whatever came next mattered.

[NOTICE: ”THE TIDE DOES NOT CHOOSE SIDES. IT ONLY WAITS FOR SOMEONE TO LOSE.”]

The table sat in heavy, contemplative silence, the true, staggering shape of the crisis finally, fully settling into place — not simply a rival network to negotiate with or defeat, but something older and hungrier waiting patiently behind the entire conflict, ready to feed regardless of who actually won.

”Then we can’t just focus on beating the Concord,” Ethan said finally, quiet and resolute. ”Even if we somehow win the Convergence outright, if there’s something out there that only cares about who loses — we might just be setting up the next tragedy instead of actually solving this.”

Malachar nodded slowly, the weight of that landing across his own hard-won understanding of exactly how costly a hollow victory could become. ”So what do we actually do.”

Ethan looked around the table — at Wren, fragile but genuinely present for the first time; at the assembled circle that had carried him through every impossible crisis this entire story had produced — and felt the shape of an answer beginning, slowly, to form.

”We do what we always do,” he said. ”We figure out the third option nobody else thought was possible. Except this time, I think we need to find it before the Concord even shows up properly, because I don’t think we’ve got room left to improvise once they do.”
