Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”The golem’s been asking when I’m coming home,” Ethan repeated, feeling something warm and slightly guilty settle in his chest. ”How’s it even asking that. It doesn’t exactly do full sentences.”

[NOTICE: According to Suresh’s report, it has taken to parking itself directly outside Room 404’s door every evening, tray prepared, waiting. When Ethan does not appear, it produces what Suresh describes as ”an increasingly aggressive series of disappointed chirps” before eventually rolling away to store the now-cold tea rather than let it go to waste.]

Ethan felt a genuine laugh escape him, the first in what felt like days. ”It’s been making me tea every night. Even though I haven’t been there to drink it.”

[NOTICE: Correct. Suresh has been drinking most of it himself, out of what he describes as ”obligation to not let the effort go to waste.” He has also noted, and the system is relaying this verbatim, that he ”did not sign up to be the golem’s emotional support human, but here we are.”]

Ethan sat with that for a long moment, the weight of the past several weeks — the Grinding, the Watch’s founding, Candidate Zero’s throne, the Reset, the Mirror, one crisis bleeding directly into the next without ever quite giving him room to properly exhale — finally, fully catching up to him.

”I should go home,” he said quietly. ”Actually home. Not just passing through between crises.”

[NOTICE: The system agrees this would be advisable. It would also note that the current state of network stability genuinely supports it, for the first time since the Grinding concluded.]

He raised it with the assembled group that evening, and the response, to his mild surprise, wasn’t resistance but genuine, immediate relief.

”You’ve barely stopped moving in over a month,” Sundari said, her weathered expression carrying real concern beneath its usual composure. ”I’ve watched you push through exhaustion I’m not sure even someone with your capabilities should sustain indefinitely. Go home. Rest. The recovery work here will continue regardless.”

”She’s right,” Malachar said. ”I learned that lesson badly, the hard way, over a decade instead of a month. Don’t repeat my mistake just because the crisis finally slowed down enough to let you.”

Arjun, listening quietly, offered his own perspective with the particular weight of someone who’d spent centuries learning the cost of never properly resting. ”I think this is exactly the moment that matters most, actually. Not fighting through exhaustion because the crisis demands it, but choosing rest when you finally have the chance, before the next thing convinces you that you don’t.”

The journey back to Earth’s own courtyard carried a different quality than any of Ethan’s prior returns throughout this entire volume — not the exhausted, battle-worn homecoming of someone barely surviving the latest catastrophe, but something closer to genuine, hard-won relief, the accumulated weight of weeks finally, properly settling into something manageable.

The courtyard greeted him with its familiar, comfortable chaos — delegations still present, ongoing Watch business still requiring attention, but underneath it all, the steady, grounding rhythm of the Citadel’s actual community continuing its own quiet, ordinary existence regardless of whatever multiversal crisis had consumed Ethan’s recent attention.

The tea golem found him within minutes of his arrival, rolling toward him at a speed that suggested it had been monitoring the gate with considerably more diligence than its usual duties required, and deposited a fresh cup into his hands with an urgency that bordered on reproachful.

”I know,” Ethan said, accepting the cup with genuine, grateful warmth. ”I know, I’m sorry. I’ve been gone a lot.”

The golem chirped something that sounded, unmistakably, like an accusation.

”You’re right,” Ethan admitted. ”That’s fair. I promise, I’m actually staying for a while this time. No corridors, no emergency summons, no ancient thrones. Just — this. For a bit.”

The golem seemed to consider this, then rolled a small, satisfied circle around his feet before settling contentedly nearby, apparently deciding, for now, to accept the apology at face value.

Suresh found him a short while later, clipboard notably absent for once, and simply sat down beside Ethan on the low courtyard wall without immediately launching into logistics.

”You look exhausted,” Suresh said, not unkindly.

”I am exhausted,” Ethan admitted. ”Genuinely, thoroughly exhausted, in a way that’s gone past the point where sleep alone fixes it.”

”Then rest,” Suresh said simply. ”The Citadel’s fine. It’s been fine this entire time, actually — you built it to function without needing you present every second, remember? That was the whole point.”

Ethan felt something ease in his chest at the reminder, the particular guilt of having been absent so consistently finally softening into something more manageable. ”How’s everyone been. Actually. Not the multiversal crisis stuff. Just — here.”

Suresh considered the question, something genuinely fond crossing his usually composed expression. ”Kael and Ren have been running joint training sessions most days. They work well together — better than either of them probably expected, honestly, given where they started. Malachar’s return has apparently spurred a lot of quiet conversation among the newer residents about what it actually looks like to change, genuinely, instead of just performing it. Priya’s been handling logistics for the visiting delegations with the same brisk efficiency she’s always had. And the bakery—” he paused, something warmer crossing his expression, ”—Meenakshi’s been rebuilding the display case the Mirror incident damaged, except better than before. Says she wanted an excuse to redesign it anyway.”

Ethan let out a slow, genuine breath, feeling, for the first time in weeks, the full, grounding weight of everything he’d actually built settle over him with something closer to peace than exhaustion.

”That’s good,” he said quietly. ”That’s genuinely, really good.”

He spent the following days doing exactly what he’d promised the golem — staying, properly, no corridors, no emergency summons interrupting the quiet rhythm of a life he’d nearly forgotten how to simply live rather than defend.

He ate breakfast, sitting down, without a countdown attached. He watched Kael and Ren run a training session, genuinely impressed by how far both of them had come since their respective, complicated introductions to this story. He sat with Malachar over tea, the former Tyrant King gradually, visibly settling into something considerably lighter than the rigid, unyielding certainty he’d once carried, finding, in the Citadel’s ordinary rhythms, a kind of peace his own throne had never once offered him.

And on the third evening, sitting on his own couch — the same one that had once briefly relocated to the sky during the war against the Framework — with a fresh cup of tea and absolutely nothing urgent demanding his attention, Ethan finally, properly exhaled.

[NOTICE: The system, quiet through most of the past several days, finally interjected, its tone carrying something genuinely warm.]

”What,” Ethan said, not opening his eyes.

[NOTICE: The system would simply like to note that this is the first time in over a month it has observed the subject genuinely, fully at rest, without any active crisis requiring immediate attention.]

”Yeah,” Ethan said, a tired, contented smile crossing his face. ”Feels good. Feels really, really good.”

[NOTICE: The system is glad. It would like to let this moment continue undisturbed for as long as possible.]

[NOTICE: It would also like to note, with what it hopes reads as gentle rather than alarming, that ”as long as possible” has, throughout this entire volume, tended to be considerably shorter than either of them would prefer.]

Ethan cracked one eye open, wary despite the peaceful moment. ”Don’t jinx it.”

[NOTICE: The system will attempt not to. It would simply like the record to reflect that it made a genuine effort at optimism before whatever inevitably comes next.]

Ethan closed his eyes again, settling deeper into the couch, choosing, deliberately, to enjoy exactly this moment for as long as it actually lasted — however long that turned out to be.
