Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Wren was standing in the doorway before Ethan could figure out how to answer him.

He looked smaller than usual in his sleep clothes, hair sticking up on one side, ancient eyes doing the thing where they went very wide and very old at the same time — a kid’s face wearing a much older person’s dread. The tea golem shuffled over immediately and planted itself beside him, one blocky arm extended in a gesture it had clearly decided meant comfort, even though it mostly just looked like it was offering him a handshake.

”Did you find someone,” Wren said again, quieter this time, like saying it softer might change the answer.

Ethan crouched down to his level, which felt like the only correct move available. Cosmic multiversal crisis or not, you didn’t deliver news like this from a standing position to a kid who’d just woken up scared.

”We found a signal,” he said. ”Somebody was on it. Talking. Real words, not just noise.” He paused. ”Then it got cut off.”

He watched that land — watched Wren’s face do three things in quick succession: hope, then the beginning of something that might have been joy, then the whole thing collapsing inward the second the word cut off registered.

”Cut off how?”

”[NOTICE:] can you—”

[NOTICE: I would love to soften this, Wren, truly, it is not in my nature but I am capable of learning. Unfortunately the honest answer is: someone else found the signal at the same moment we did, and they did not want it heard, and they stopped it. We do not currently know who.]

Wren’s small hands curled into the hem of his sleep shirt. ”That’s not how the tide sounds,” he said, so quietly it took Ethan a second to catch it. ”The tide doesn’t cut things off. It just... takes everything. All at once. This is different.”

Everyone in the room went very still.

It was the most Wren had ever volunteered, unprompted, about what had actually happened to his home. Four Chapters of careful non-answers, of Suresh redirecting him toward breakfast, of Sundari sitting with him in silence rather than pushing — and here it was, dropped almost sideways, like it slipped out before he could stop it.

Kaia, to her credit, didn’t lunge at it. She just nodded slowly, like he’d confirmed something rather than revealed it. ”Okay,” she said. ”That’s useful. That’s really useful, actually. Thank you for telling us that.”

Wren blinked at her, apparently surprised that volunteering information hadn’t resulted in immediate further interrogation.

Ethan filed the detail away carefully — the tide takes everything, this cuts things off, those are not the same threat — and made a private, firm decision not to chase it any further tonight. The kid had given them a thread. Pulling on it at midnight, in his pajamas, with the tea golem’s arm still awkwardly extended over his shoulder, was not how you earned the rest of the story. That came later. Ch. 243-later, if the pattern held. Tonight was for making sure he felt safe enough to go back to sleep at all.

”You did good telling us that,” Ethan said. ”You don’t have to say more than that right now.”

[NOTICE: He is correct, and I would like the record to reflect that I am capable of restraint when it actually matters, unlike certain other entities across three networks who apparently think ’cut the signal, spook the child, leave’ is an acceptable Tuesday.]

That, at least, got a very small, very tired huff out of Wren that might have been the beginning of a laugh.

They didn’t wake the rest of the Citadel. Ethan made that call too — Suresh could hear about it in the morning with his clipboard already in hand, ready to file it under whatever category ”unidentified entity intercepts multiversal beacon” fell under. Priya’s patrol didn’t need pulling off rotation for something that had already stopped happening. Malachar would want details before opinions, and there weren’t enough details yet to give him.

What Ethan did do was sit with Wren until he fell back asleep — actually asleep, not just pretending so the adults would leave — with the tea golem stationed by the door like the world’s least intimidating and most devoted guard.

Kaia stayed too, working quietly at the small table with a corridor-stability display Ethan didn’t fully understand, murmuring occasional notes to the system.

”The interruption pattern,” she said eventually, keeping her voice low. ”It wasn’t clumsy. Whoever did it knew exactly where the signal terminated and hit it clean. That’s not brute force. That’s precision.”

[NOTICE: Which rules out several things I was hoping it wouldn’t rule out. A random corridor collapse doesn’t cut a signal that cleanly. Neither does the Cleansing Concord, historically — their contact style is loud, formal, and frankly a little theatrical, per every recorded prior Convergence. This was quiet. Surgical. Somebody who did not want to be seen doing it.]

”So not the Concord,” Ethan said.

[NOTICE: Not their established style, no. Which either means it’s a new tactic they haven’t shown us yet — possible, I don’t love it — or it’s someone we haven’t accounted for at all.]

Kaia’s jaw tightened. ”There’s a name for that in corridor theory,” she said. ”We don’t use it much because it’s mostly theoretical. A network that stays deliberately unlisted. Doesn’t register with the Convergence Authority, doesn’t participate in Convergences on the record, just... watches. Interferes when it wants to. No accountability, because officially it doesn’t exist.”

”That sounds like something someone would’ve mentioned to me by now.”

”It’s theoretical, Ethan. Like — ’we think the math allows for it’ theoretical. Nobody’s ever confirmed one.” She hesitated. ”Nobody’s ever had evidence like this, either.”

The system was quiet for a beat longer than usual.

[NOTICE: I want to be clear that ”theoretical” is doing a lot of load-bearing work in that sentence, and I do not love how much weight it is currently holding.]

It was almost dawn when the kettle warbled again.

Not the beacon loop. Not the cut-off voice. Something new — a clean, deliberate transmission, formatted, structured, sent, the way a message was sent when whoever sent it wanted you to know it had been sent on purpose.

Kaia was on her feet instantly. Ethan set down the (third) cup of tea he’d made himself out of pure stubborn refusal to sleep until this resolved one way or the other.

[NOTICE: Incoming. Formatted. Not Watch protocol. Not Concord protocol. Not the beacon’s pattern either.]

[NOTICE: New tag required. Generating one now, because apparently that’s part of my job description too.]

The words resolved on the display Kaia had rigged, plain and clipped and giving away nothing:

[OBSERVATION: You heard what you were not meant to hear.]

[OBSERVATION: The one who spoke is not lost. Not yet.]

[OBSERVATION: But listening again will cost you more than you are prepared to spend.]ℯ

Nothing else came through. No signature. No source coordinates the system could trace — it tried, immediately, and got nothing but a clean dead end, the digital equivalent of a door closing so softly you couldn’t tell which direction it had swung from.

Ethan read it twice. Then, because apparently three volumes of cosmic escalation hadn’t managed to dent his priorities even slightly, his first coherent thought was: that’s a genuinely rude way to talk to someone who was just trying to help a kid find out if his home was really gone.

”[NOTICE:] does that sound like a threat to you, or a warning?”

[NOTICE: Yes.]

”That’s not an answer.”

[NOTICE: It’s both, Ethan. That’s what makes it worse. A threat wants something from you. A warning is trying, in its own deeply unsettling way, to protect you from something. I cannot currently tell you which one this is, and I do not enjoy admitting that, because usually by this point in a crisis I at least have a sarcastic angle to hide behind.]

Kaia stared at the message, arms crossed tight over her chest. ”Whoever sent that,” she said slowly, ”knows we were listening within hours. That’s not surveillance. That’s presence. They’re close. Maybe closer than the Concord even is right now.”

Ethan looked down the hall, toward the room where Wren had finally, finally gone quiet and still, one small hand curled loosely around the tea golem’s extended arm even in sleep.

The one who spoke is not lost. Not yet.

Somebody out there — survivor, warden, warning-sender, whatever it turned out to be — had just confirmed, in four cold clipped lines, that there was still something left of the Verdant Accord to find. And in the same breath, told them that finding it might cost more than any of them currently understood.

He thought about waking Wren up right then, telling him not yet meant hope, letting him have that much before the sun came up.

He didn’t. Not because it wasn’t true. Because he had no idea yet what it was going to cost, and until he did, he wasn’t going to hand a ten-year-old-shaped kid a promise he might not be able to keep.

”[NOTICE:],” he said instead, quiet, watching the message still glowing faintly on Kaia’s display. ”Find out who sent that. I don’t care how long it takes.”

[NOTICE: I am already trying. I would like to note, for the record, that I have never in my entire operational history hit a trace wall this clean.

[NOTICE: Which means whatever just spoke to us, Ethan — it is not new. It is not improvising.

[NOTICE: It has done this before. To someone else. And gotten away with it every time.]
