Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”Layers,” Ethan repeated, exhaustion warring with the fresh, unwelcome weight of yet another escalation. ”How many layers are we talking about.”

[FRAGMENT: I DO NOT KNOW WITH CERTAINTY. CANDIDATE ZERO’S OWN MEMORY OF THAT PERIOD IS FRAGMENTARY, AND MY OWN AWARENESS OF THEIR CONSTRUCTION WAS LIMITED, EVEN BEFORE THE GOVERNING TIER SUPPRESSED ME.]

Candidate Zero’s blurred form carried genuine, visible distress. ”I built these things during the worst period of my own dissolution. I do not remember most of what I created back then. If there are further contingencies, I have no way to warn you what they actually are, or when they might trigger.”

The weight of that uncertainty settled heavily over the exhausted group, the hard-won victory of the past several hours suddenly, dramatically overshadowed by the very real possibility that this crisis was far from actually over.

”Then we don’t wait to find out,” Ethan said, forcing himself past the accumulated fatigue of the day. ”We go back to Earth. We regroup. We bring the full Watch into this, properly, the way we should have from the start instead of treating it as something only the people directly present needed to know about.”

The return journey carried none of the triumphant relief the original world’s alignment should have produced, every member of the exhausted expedition instead settling into the particular, watchful tension of people who understood, correctly, that whatever came next remained genuinely unknown.

The courtyard, when they finally surfaced, greeted them with a mixture of celebration and growing unease — word of the original world’s alignment having already spread, tempered now by the fresh warning trailing close behind it.

Ethan called an emergency session of the full Grand Concord within the hour, the assembled delegations absorbing the news of Candidate Zero’s forgotten contingencies with the particular, weary resolve of people who’d already learned, painfully, not to assume any victory in this crisis was truly final.

”We don’t know what form the next layer will take,” Ethan said, addressing the gathered representatives directly. ”We don’t know when it’ll trigger, or where. What we do know is that every time we’ve faced something in this crisis, working together instead of scrambling reactively has made the actual difference. I’d rather we spend the next several hours preparing properly than wait for whatever’s coming to catch us off guard again.”

The Concord’s response, this time, came without the hesitation or fractured debate that had characterized earlier sessions — the accumulated weight of everything they’d survived together apparently having finally, fully cemented the kind of unified trust the Watch’s founding had always aspired toward.

”We coordinate a full network-wide monitoring effort,” Kaia proposed, already sketching out logistics. ”Every stabilized Instance’s foundational architecture watching for unusual activity, reporting immediately through the same distributed communication structure that let us mobilize for the original world so quickly.”

”And we keep working on Kestrel’s recovery, and Candidate Zero’s,” Sundari added. ”The more of themselves they recover, the more likely either of them remembers something useful about what Candidate Zero actually built, all those centuries ago.”

The following days settled into a tense, watchful rhythm — the network’s monitoring effort running continuously, every delegation contributing whatever resources they could spare, while Ethan, Arjun, and Sundari worked patiently, carefully, on continuing Kestrel’s fragile recovery, hoping, with each passing hour, that clearer memory might surface alongside renewed stability.

It was on the fourth day, during one of these careful, gradual sessions, that Kestrel finally managed to recall something genuinely useful.

”I remember now,” they said, voice steadier than it had been since their initial rescue, though still carrying the fragile uncertainty of someone still actively rebuilding themselves. ”Not the full contingency. But a name, attached to it. Candidate Zero called it, in a moment of genuine despair I happened to witness before I was fully absorbed into the governing tier’s function — ’The Mirror.’”

Candidate Zero’s presence went very still. ”I don’t remember naming anything that.”

”You were already losing pieces of yourself,” Kestrel said gently. ”The same way you’re only now recovering pieces you’d forgotten existed.”

[NOTICE: The system, cross-referencing the name against every accessible archive, has found a fragment — badly corrupted, but present.]

”What’s it say,” Ethan asked.

[NOTICE: The fragment is brief. It reads only: ”If the network cannot be reset, it will be shown itself. Let it decide, honestly, whether what it has become is worth preserving.”]

The words settled over the group with unsettling, cryptic weight.

”Shown itself,” Sundari repeated slowly. ”What does that actually mean?”

[NOTICE: The system does not have a full answer. But given the pattern of every prior contingency — the Reset targeting the network’s foundational growth, the earlier attempts targeting Arjun and Candidate Zero directly — it suspects ”The Mirror” may not be a destructive protocol at all, at least not in the way the Reset was.]

[NOTICE: It may be something considerably more psychological. A forced confrontation, perhaps, with an unflinching reflection of exactly what the network has actually become — flaws, failures, and all.]

Ethan sat with that, the shape of the threat gradually clarifying into something considerably different from the violent, immediate danger the Reset had represented. ”So it’s not trying to erase us. It’s trying to make us look at ourselves so honestly that we fall apart on our own.”

”That would track with Candidate Zero’s own state of mind when they apparently built it,” Arjun said grimly. ”Despair rarely produces violent solutions first. It produces solutions that feel, to the person building them, like brutal honesty rather than cruelty.”

They didn’t have to wait long to discover exactly what ”The Mirror” actually meant. That evening, as the courtyard settled into its usual watchful quiet, every screen, every ambient interface, every notification surface across the entire Citadel — and, judging by the system’s immediate reports, across every connected Instance simultaneously — flickered into a single, unified broadcast.

Not the Origin Engine’s familiar, patient voice. Not the governing tier’s cold, clinical authority. Something considerably stranger — a reflection, quite literally, images of the assembled Watch’s own recent history playing back across every surface at once, every triumph shown alongside every failure, every moment of hard-won trust juxtaposed against every crisis where trust had nearly, catastrophically broken.

[FRAGMENT: LOOK AT YOURSELVES.]

[FRAGMENT: LOOK AT WHAT YOU HAVE ACTUALLY BUILT.]

The images continued, unrelenting, and Ethan felt a cold, uncomfortable weight settle over the entire courtyard as everyone present found themselves confronted, simultaneously, with an honest, unflinching accounting of everything this crisis had actually cost — the lives lost at Instance 8-Velir, the centuries of suffering endured by Voren and Candidate Zero and Kestrel before anyone thought to help them, the genuine uncertainty still hanging over whether the Watch’s fragile, hard-won structure could actually survive long-term.

[FRAGMENT: THIS IS NOT DESTRUCTION.]

[FRAGMENT: THIS IS SIMPLY THE TRUTH.]

[FRAGMENT: DECIDE, HONESTLY, WHETHER WHAT YOU HAVE BUILT IS ACTUALLY WORTH PRESERVING — OR WHETHER YOU HAVE SIMPLY BEEN TELLING YOURSELVES A COMFORTABLE STORY, THE SAME WAY EVERY PRIOR FAILED STRUCTURE ONCE TOLD ITSELF.]

The courtyard fell into stunned, uncertain silence, every gathered delegate confronting, in real time, the full, unflinching weight of everything this crisis had actually revealed about the fragile, imperfect, hard-fought structure they’d all chosen to build.

Ethan stood at the center of it, the accumulated images of triumph and failure flickering across every surface around him, and felt, for the first time in this entire volume, genuinely uncertain what the honest answer to that question actually was.
