Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”The Reset,” Ethan repeated, feeling the words carry a weight that made every hard-won victory of the past several days suddenly, sickeningly uncertain. ”What does that actually mean?”

Kestrel’s blurred form went rigid, genuine fear breaking through their earlier fragile hope. ”I remember it. Barely — buried the same way everything else was buried before tonight. Candidate Zero built it as a last resort, centuries ago, in case the network’s structure ever became genuinely, catastrophically unstable. A failsafe designed to collapse the entire multiversal architecture back to its most basic, original state, wiping away every subsequent development — every Instance’s independent growth, every candidate’s individual legacy, everything built since its original activation.”

Ethan felt cold dread settle deep in his chest. ”Every Instance. All six thousand of them. Everyone.”

”Reset to baseline,” Kestrel confirmed, voice shaking. ”Not destroyed, not in the way Instance 8-Velir collapsed. Simply — reverted. Stripped of everything that’s grown or changed since the failsafe’s original activation point, centuries ago. Every relationship built, every crisis survived, every piece of growth any world has achieved since then — undone.”

[NOTICE: The system, cross-referencing rapidly, would like to confirm the scope of this threat.]

[NOTICE: If triggered, the Reset would not simply undo the Watch’s founding. It would erase everything Earth’s own apocalypse produced since its activation — the Citadel, every relationship built within it, every trial Ethan survived, every piece of growth the entire network has experienced across centuries.]

”That’s not a failsafe,” Ethan said, fury rising fast and sharp. ”That’s a scorched-earth threat. They’re saying if they can’t have centralized control, nobody gets anything at all.”

”I believe that’s precisely their intent,” Kestrel said grimly. ”They would frame it as restoring stability. In truth, it is simply the ultimate expression of exactly the fear you identified back at the Root — an authority so terrified of losing control that it would rather erase everything than accept genuine accountability.”

They returned to the surface at a dead run, Kestrel accompanying them now, fully committed, the urgency of the threat overriding whatever careful, gradual introduction to the Citadel’s community might have otherwise been appropriate.

The courtyard erupted into immediate, focused chaos the moment Ethan relayed the threat, delegates from dozens of Instances absorbing the news with a mixture of fear and grim, hardened resolve.

”How long do we have,” Priya asked, already shifting into the crisp, practical coordination that had carried them through every prior crisis.

[NOTICE: The system cannot confirm an exact timeline. The Reset’s activation sequence appears to require gathering sufficient power from across the network’s own architecture — likely explaining why it has never previously been triggered, given the sheer scale required.]

”So it’s not instant,” Malachar said. ”That’s something. How do we stop it?”

[NOTICE: The system believes the Reset draws its activation power from the same foundational architecture the group has already twice helped stabilize — Earth’s own terminal, Instance 6-Halloway’s chamber, and, now, potentially Candidate Zero’s throne itself.]

”So it needs our own architecture’s cooperation to work,” Sundari said, understanding dawning fast. ”The same architecture we’ve spent this entire crisis teaching to say no.”

”Then we ask it to refuse again,” Ethan said, already moving toward the excavation site. ”The same way it refused to keep feeding Candidate Zero’s throne. If the foundational systems across this network have genuinely learned they’re allowed to say no, this is exactly the moment that lesson needs to matter most.”

They descended together, the full weight of the assembled Watch’s resources finally, urgently mobilized — Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, Kestrel, Candidate Zero’s own presence lending whatever strength they’d recovered, and, through careful coordination with Priya and Kaia above ground, simultaneous outreach to every stabilized Instance’s own foundational architecture across the network.

The response, when it came, carried the same hard-won, hopeful resolve that had defined every prior victory this crisis had produced.

[NOTICE: INSTANCE 6-HALLOWAY’S FOUNDATIONAL ARCHITECTURE HAS BEEN CONTACTED. RESPONSE: REFUSAL CONFIRMED.]

One by one, as the message spread through the network’s newly established connections, Instance after Instance’s own long-suffering, ancient architecture responded with the same quiet, hard-won resolve — refusing to feed the catastrophic protocol that would erase everything they’d only just begun to grow beyond.

But the governing tier’s remaining two entities, sensing the resistance, shifted their approach with cold, ruthless efficiency.

The buried city’s chamber shuddered violently, gold-violet light flaring in sudden, agonized distress as the governing tier attempted to seize by force what the network’s foundational architecture had refused to give freely.

”They’re going to tear it apart,” Sundari said, alarm cutting through her voice. ”The same way they nearly destroyed the foundational chamber trying to hold onto Arjun. Except this time, across every connected Instance at once.”

Ethan felt the weight of the crisis settle into its full, staggering scope — not a single chamber’s survival at stake, but the entire network’s fragile, hard-won foundation, threatened with violent extraction by an authority determined to prove, through catastrophic destruction if necessary, that its own centralized control had been the only thing holding anything together all along.

”Then we don’t let them extract it cleanly,” Ethan said, drawing the Void Sword, its dark energy flaring with the same intensity it had carried during the Void Pulse itself. ”If they want to force this, they’re going to have to force it through me first.”

He planted himself at the chamber’s center, the same spot where the buried city’s terminal had first welcomed him weeks earlier, and felt the full, staggering weight of the network’s collective refusal channel through him — not power he was seizing, but strength being offered, freely, by every Instance that had chosen, deliberately, to say no alongside him.

[NOTICE: The system, straining under the effort of coordinating this unprecedented, network-wide resistance, would like to confirm something significant.]

Ethan, sword raised, energy building around him in a manner that felt disturbingly reminiscent of the Void Pulse’s original, devastating scale, gritted his teeth. ”What.”

[NOTICE: The subject is not simply defending Earth’s own foundational architecture anymore. He is, functionally, channeling the collective, voluntary resistance of every stabilized Instance across the network simultaneously — a scale of distributed strength that has never before existed, because the structure required to make it possible never existed either.]

[NOTICE: This is the Watch, functioning exactly as intended, for the first time at its true, full scale.]

The governing tier’s forced extraction attempt met that collective resistance and, for a long, tense, agonizing moment, held — the chamber’s violent shuddering caught in a standoff neither side could immediately break.

Then, with a final, desperate surge, the two remaining silver entities pushed harder, and Ethan felt the strain of holding against them threaten to overwhelm even the network’s combined, voluntary strength.

”I can’t hold this much longer alone,” he gritted out, sweat and effort straining every word.

It was Kestrel, standing beside him, blurred form steadying with sudden, unexpected resolve, who finally stepped forward.

”You’re not alone,” they said, voice carrying centuries of buried, suppressed conviction finally, fully surfacing. ”I helped build pieces of this architecture too, before I was absorbed into it. I know exactly where its weakest point actually is.”

They reached out, hand meeting the chamber’s straining, gold-violet light, and the governing tier’s forced extraction attempt suddenly, violently faltered.

The chamber flared with sudden, catastrophic intensity, and Ethan, straining against the collective weight of the network’s resistance, felt something in the balance of power shift dramatically, dangerously, toward an outcome none of them had fully prepared for.
