Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The ripple didn’t advance. That was the first thing Ethan noticed, and the first thing that eased, fractionally, the immediate, sword-drawn tension of the moment — whatever was pressing against the boundary wasn’t rushing forward, wasn’t attacking. It simply hovered there, patient and vast, the way something might pause at the edge of a doorway, waiting to see if it was actually welcome before stepping through.

”It’s not moving,” Kael said, weapon still raised but voice carrying genuine, cautious observation rather than pure alarm. ”It’s just — watching.”

”Same way it felt when we first detected Wren, before we knew what he was,” Sundari said, though her own wariness hadn’t fully eased. ”Careful doesn’t mean harmless. Let’s not forget that distinction too quickly.”

”It’s not the network,” Wren’s voice crackled through the connection, sharper now, urgent. ”Not the whole thing. That would look — different. Bigger. This feels smaller. Focused.”

”Focused on what,” Ethan asked, sword still raised, eyes fixed on the rippling boundary.

”On you, I think. Whatever’s out there noticed the boundary thin enough to let a signal through, and it’s investigating. The same way I did, honestly, except I didn’t have anything left to be afraid of by the time I found you. Whatever this is might.”

The ripple shifted again, slower this time, resolving gradually into something that made every member of the expedition go still — not a full manifestation, not the vast, cosmic presence Ethan had half-expected given everything they’d just learned about Convergence, but something considerably smaller, more contained. A shape, faint and translucent, roughly humanoid, though its edges blurred and shifted in ways that made it difficult to focus on directly.

”That’s not a network,” Malachar said slowly. ”That’s a person. Or something shaped like one.”

The figure remained at the boundary’s edge, neither advancing nor retreating, and Ethan, feeling the particular, stubborn instinct that had carried him through every prior first-contact situation this story had produced, lowered the Void Sword slightly.

”Hey,” he called out, keeping his voice level. ”I’m Ethan. We’re not here looking for a fight. We got a warning, and we came to understand it better before it becomes a crisis instead of a conversation.”

The figure’s translucent form flickered, and for a long moment, nothing happened. Then, faint and strange, carrying an accent unlike anything the system’s translation matrix had encountered before, a voice reached them — considerably more formal, more careful than Wren’s own fragile tone.

”...you can perceive me.”

”We can,” Ethan confirmed. ”Who are you?”

”A Watcher. That is the closest translation your system’s own architecture appears able to render. I am not native to your garden, nor am I the network approaching it. I exist in the space between — an observer, assigned to monitor thinning boundaries and report back to the appropriate authority.”

Ethan glanced at the system, wary. ”Authority? What authority?”

[NOTICE: The system does not currently recognize this designation. It would recommend caution, but also notes that the entity’s demeanor, thus far, reads as procedural rather than hostile — considerably closer to the Convergence Authority’s own eventual introduction, based on everything the system can currently infer, than to an active threat.]

”You already knew about the Convergence Authority,” Ethan said slowly, addressing the Watcher directly. ”That’s not a coincidence, is it.”

”No,” the Watcher confirmed. ”I report to them. My function is precisely this — identifying thinning boundaries before a full Convergence event occurs, so that proper process can begin in an orderly fashion, rather than networks colliding without warning or preparation.”

The explanation carried a weight of genuine, procedural relief, and Ethan felt some of the immediate tension of the confrontation ease, replaced by a considerably more complicated, uncertain kind of dread.

”So there’s an actual system for this,” Sundari said. ”A formal process. Not just chaos and collision.”

”There is,” the Watcher confirmed. ”Whether that process feels fair to the networks involved is a separate question entirely, and one I am not authorized to comment on directly.”

The careful, guarded phrasing didn’t escape Ethan’s notice. ”That sounds like you’ve got opinions you’re not allowed to share.”

The Watcher’s translucent form flickered again, something that might have been hesitation crossing its indistinct features.

”I have observed a great many Convergence events across a great many gardens,” it said finally, choosing its words with obvious care. ”I am required to remain neutral in my reporting. I am not required to feel nothing about what I observe.”

”That’s about as close to a confession as we’re gonna get,” Malachar murmured.

”Tell us about the network that’s approaching ours,” Ethan said, keeping his tone steady but firm. ”You said you’re assigned to monitor the boundary. That means you already know something about who’s on the other side.”

The Watcher was quiet for a long moment, and Ethan sensed, correctly, that whatever answer it eventually gave would carry weight considerably beyond simple procedural information.

”They call themselves the Cleansing Concord,” the Watcher said finally. ”They have approached three prior boundaries during my tenure as Watcher. All three Convergences concluded in their favor.”

The words landed with unsettling finality.

”What does ’in their favor’ actually mean,” Ethan asked, though some part of him already dreaded the answer.

”It means the other network no longer exists in any form that would be recognizable to its original inhabitants,” the Watcher said quietly. ”The Cleansing Concord does not simply absorb. They restructure — thoroughly, completely, according to their own strict principles. What remains afterward bears their architecture, their rules, their entire worldview. Nothing of the original garden survives the process intact.”

The weight of that settled over the expedition like a physical thing, and Ethan felt the particular, cold clarity of genuine, existential stakes finally, fully land.

”Three prior Convergences,” he repeated. ”They’ve done this three times already, and won every time.”

”Yes.”

”Then how are we supposed to stand a chance against something with that kind of track record,” Kael asked, voice tight.

”I do not know,” the Watcher admitted, and something in its careful, procedural tone carried, for the first time, a note of genuine, unguarded honesty. ”I have observed a great many networks facing this exact question. Most respond by preparing for war, believing strength alone will determine the outcome. Some respond by attempting negotiation, hoping reason will prevail where force cannot. I have never, in my entire tenure, observed a network respond the way yours already has.”

”Which is what,” Ethan asked, genuinely curious now.

”By sending an unarmed diplomatic party to the boundary itself, before any formal contact has even been established, specifically to understand rather than to threaten,” the Watcher said. ”That is — unusual. I would not have expected it, given everything I know about the Cleansing Concord’s own history.”

Ethan felt something steady settle in his chest despite the mounting dread of everything just revealed. ”Maybe that’s exactly the point. Maybe doing the unexpected thing is the only actual advantage we’ve got against a network that’s already won this exact fight three times before.”

The Watcher’s translucent form flickered thoughtfully, considering that.

”Perhaps,” it said finally. ”I would recommend, regardless, formal preparation. The Convergence Authority will likely make contact soon, now that your boundary has thinned enough for observation. I would suggest being ready for that conversation before it happens rather than after.”

The Watcher’s presence began, gradually, to fade back toward the rippling boundary, its careful, procedural duty apparently fulfilled for now, and Ethan called out one final question before the connection could fully close.

”Wait. You said you’ve observed a great many Convergences. Does the Cleansing Concord ever lose? Even once?”

The Watcher paused at the boundary’s edge, its translucent form flickering with something that might have been genuine consideration.

”Not that I have personally witnessed,” it said finally. ”But I have only served as Watcher for the past several centuries. There are older records, predating my own tenure, that I do not have direct access to. Whether the Cleansing Concord has ever truly lost a Convergence is a question I cannot answer with certainty.”

The figure faded entirely, the rippling boundary settling back into its raw, unmarked stillness, and the expedition stood in tense, contemplative silence, absorbing the full weight of everything just revealed.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the aftermath, would like to raise one final piece of information — something it detected during the Watcher’s final statement, buried in the phrasing itself.]

Ethan glanced over, exhausted but attentive. ”What.”

[NOTICE: The Watcher specified that it had not personally witnessed the Cleansing Concord ever losing a Convergence ”during my own tenure.” That phrasing implies a deliberate, careful distinction — as though the Watcher itself is aware of older records suggesting the outcome may not always have been so one-sided, but is either unable or unwilling to access or share that information directly.]

Ethan felt the shape of a fragile, uncertain hope settle over the exhausted dread of everything else this expedition had revealed.

”So there might be a precedent,” he said slowly. ”Somewhere, buried in older records nobody currently has access to. A Convergence the Cleansing Concord actually lost.”

[NOTICE: The system cannot confirm this with certainty. But it believes, given everything gathered today, that finding that precedent — if it genuinely exists — may prove considerably more valuable than any weapon or defensive strategy this network could otherwise prepare.]
