Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The boundary held its raw, unmarked stillness for a long moment after the Watcher’s presence faded, the expedition standing in tense, thoughtful silence, absorbing everything just revealed. It was Wren’s voice, crackling faintly through the connection, that finally broke the quiet.

”You should be able to reach me now,” he said, something careful and hopeful threading through the static. ”The boundary’s thinner here than anywhere else along this edge — that’s actually why I’ve been broadcasting from this exact point for so long. It’s the closest I can get to being heard at all.”

Ethan glanced at Kaia, whose expertise in corridor stability had gotten them this far already. ”Can we actually reach him? Physically?”

Kaia studied the readings on the small, portable device she’d brought specifically for this purpose, her brow furrowing in careful concentration. ”Maybe. The boundary’s not stable the way a normal corridor is — this isn’t crossing into another Instance, it’s crossing into the literal space between networks. I don’t have a map for that. But the thinness the Watcher mentioned, combined with Wren’s own signal acting as an anchor point—” she looked up, uncertain but willing, ”—I think we could try. Carefully.”

”Do it,” Ethan said. ”If there’s a real chance to actually meet him instead of just hearing a voice, I want to take it.”

The process took nearly twenty minutes, Kaia and Sundari working in careful, deliberate tandem, drawing on both the Threshold Accord’s own corridor expertise and Sundari’s centuries of ancient-architecture experience to stretch a fragile, temporary bridge across the raw, unmarked emptiness stretching before them.

The bridge, when it finally formed, didn’t look like any transit corridor Ethan had walked through before — no warm gold-violet glow, no familiar archival text scrolling along its edges, just a thin, translucent thread of light stretching out into the void, fragile enough that Ethan could feel it straining under the effort of simply existing.

”It won’t hold long,” Kaia warned. ”Maybe ten minutes, if we’re careful. This isn’t built for a full expedition to cross.”

”Then I go alone,” Ethan said, already stepping toward the fragile bridge. ”Faster, safer, and if it’s really as unstable as you’re saying, I’d rather it be one person at risk instead of the whole team.”

Malachar moved to object, but Sundari, reading the situation with her own hard-won experience, placed a hand on his arm. ”Let him. This is exactly the kind of first contact that matters more coming from him specifically. Wren’s spent who knows how long alone. He needs to see a person, not an expedition.”

Ethan crossed the fragile bridge carefully, each step feeling less like walking and more like moving through something that hadn’t quite decided whether it wanted to hold his weight, and emerged, finally, into a small, strange pocket of space — not quite inside the network, not quite outside it either, a fragile little bubble of existence that felt, unmistakably, like the last remaining fragment of somewhere that used to be considerably bigger.

And there, standing in the middle of that fragile, lonely space, was Wren.

He looked, at first glance, like a child — small, slight, dressed in clothes that carried the faded, careful mending of someone who’d had to make very little last for a very long time. But the moment Ethan looked closer, the illusion cracked: his eyes carried a weight no child should ever have to carry, ancient and exhausted in a way that made his small, youthful frame feel almost like a costume worn over something considerably older.

”You’re real,” Wren said quietly, staring at Ethan with something between disbelief and desperate hope. ”I mean — I knew you were real. The signal was real. But actually seeing someone, standing here, in front of me—”

He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t need to.

Ethan crouched down slightly, keeping his voice gentle, the same careful warmth he’d learned to offer every fragile, frightened entity this story had ever introduced him to. ”How long have you been out here? Alone?”

Wren considered the question for a long moment, something flickering behind his ancient, weary eyes. ”I stopped counting a while ago. Time doesn’t really work the same way, out here in the space between. I know it’s been long enough that I forgot most of what my own garden actually looked like, before.”

”I’m sorry,” Ethan said quietly, and meant it.

”You don’t have to be,” Wren said. ”You didn’t do it. Nobody in your network did anything to mine. That’s — actually kind of the whole point of what I’m trying to warn you about. It’s not personal. It’s just what happens.”

Ethan sat down properly, cross-legged, on the fragile, uncertain ground of Wren’s small pocket of existence, settling in for whatever conversation this fragile bridge’s remaining minutes would allow.

”Tell me about you,” Ethan said. ”Not the Convergence, not the warning. Just — who you were. Before.”

Wren blinked, visibly thrown by the question, as though nobody had thought to ask him that in longer than he could remember.

”I don’t know if I remember properly,” he admitted. ”But I think — I think I liked drawing. There was a place, in my garden, kind of like your bakery. I heard about that, through the signal, before I ever managed to actually talk to anyone. A place that survived an apocalypse because someone cared about it too much to let it fall. I think I had something like that too, once. A place I liked going, before everything changed.”

”What happened to it,” Ethan asked gently.

Wren’s small, ancient features tightened, old grief surfacing despite the passage of however much time had blurred the specifics. ”I don’t remember the exact moment. I remember it being there, and then I remember it not being there anymore, and I remember being the only thing left that still remembered it existed at all.”

Ethan felt something ache in his chest at the quiet, devastating simplicity of that description — an entire world, an entire life, reduced to a single, lonely witness carrying its memory forward into an empty, unmarked void.

”You’re not the only thing left anymore,” Ethan said quietly. ”Not from this point forward. I promise you that.”

Wren looked at him for a long moment, something fragile and disbelieving crossing his ancient, weary features.

”You don’t even know me,” he said. ”You don’t know what I actually am. I’m not — I’m not really a person anymore, not fully. I’m more like a fragment. A piece of something that used to be whole, held together by whatever was left over after everything else got erased.”

”That doesn’t sound too different from a lot of people I already know,” Ethan said. ”Arjun spent centuries as barely more than a fragment before somebody helped him find his way back to being solid again. Candidate Zero’s still working on it. Kestrel too. You’d fit right in with the rest of my genuinely strange, wonderful found family.”

Wren’s eyes widened slightly, something in his careful, guarded composure cracking, just a little.

”You’re serious,” he said. ”You’d actually — you’d let me stay. Even though I’m the reason you now know about all of this. Even though I basically dragged your whole network into a crisis you didn’t ask for.”

”You didn’t drag us into anything,” Ethan said firmly. ”You warned us. That’s different. That’s the exact opposite of causing the crisis — that’s giving us the best possible chance at surviving it. I’m not gonna punish you for that by leaving you out here alone.”

The fragile bridge, straining audibly now under the accumulated weight of the crossing, began to flicker, Kaia’s voice reaching through faintly from the other side.

”Ethan, we’re losing stability. You need to come back, now.”

Ethan stood, offering Wren a hand. ”Come with me. I mean it. Not as a permanent decision if you’re not ready for that — just come see what an actual home looks like again. You can decide the rest after.”

Wren stared at the offered hand for a long, hesitant moment, centuries of solitary grief and careful, guarded self-protection warring visibly behind his ancient eyes.

”I don’t know if I can survive fully crossing into your network,” he said quietly. ”I’ve never tried. I don’t know what happens to something like me if it actually leaves this space.”

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring closely from the other side of the bridge, would like to offer reassurance, should the subject wish to relay it.]

”Go ahead,” Ethan said.

[NOTICE: The system has been analyzing Wren’s signature throughout this entire conversation, cross-referencing it against everything learned from Arjun’s and Candidate Zero’s own recovery processes. It believes, with reasonable confidence, that Wren’s fragmented state is structurally similar enough to those cases that the same distributed, careful support technique should apply. It would not be instant. But it would not be dangerous either, provided he crosses with support rather than alone.]

Wren listened to the translated reassurance, something fragile and hopeful finally, cautiously breaking through his ancient, weary composure.

”Okay,” he said quietly, taking Ethan’s offered hand. ”Okay. Let’s try.”

They crossed the straining bridge together, the fragile connection holding just long enough to carry them both safely to the other side, and Ethan felt, as they emerged back into the network’s familiar gold-violet light, a small, quiet, genuine victory settle over the crushing weight of everything else this expedition had revealed.

Sundari and the rest of the team gathered close immediately, careful and warm, and Wren stood among them, small and ancient and fragile, staring at the assembled group with the particular, disbelieving wonder of someone encountering genuine kindness for the first time in longer than he could properly measure.

”Welcome,” Malachar said simply, and Ethan watched something in Wren’s exhausted, weathered eyes finally, genuinely begin to ease.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the reunion with obvious warmth, would like to raise one final matter before the expedition begins its journey home.]

Ethan glanced over, cautious but hopeful. ”What.”

[NOTICE: While the bridge remained active, the system detected a final, faint transmission from beyond the boundary — not from the Cleansing Concord, and not from the Watcher.]

[NOTICE: It appears something else has also just noticed the boundary’s thinness, and has been observing this entire exchange with considerable interest.]

[NOTICE: It has not identified itself. But the system believes, based on the signature’s pattern, that whatever just watched Ethan cross into the space between networks and successfully bring someone back may be considerably older, and considerably more significant, than either Wren or the Cleansing Concord.]
