Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Morning arrived the way it usually did at the Citadel — with Suresh’s clipboard.

Ethan heard it before he saw it: the particular brisk, purposeful footsteps that meant Suresh had already heard something was wrong, had already decided he needed data to manage it, and was arriving with a fresh page and zero patience for being told to wait.

”I want it on record,” Suresh said, stepping into Room 404 and taking in the scene — Ethan still in yesterday’s clothes, three cold mugs lined up on the table, Kaia asleep sitting upright in a chair with her stabilizer still clutched in one hand — ”that I found out about a fourth multiversal player from Priya, who found out from a very tired golem, who apparently communicates now in gestures.”

”It’s not confirmed as a fourth network,” Ethan said. ”It’s a—”

[NOTICE: It is very likely a fourth network. I have spent the last four hours trying to be less alarmist about this and have failed at every attempt.]

Suresh clicked his pen. ”Start from the beacon. I’ll write while you talk.”

So Ethan did — the live signal, the cut-off voice, Wren’s half-asleep admission that the tide doesn’t cut things off, this is different, the cold four-line OBSERVATION that had arrived at dawn with no source and no mercy. Suresh’s pen moved steadily through all of it, only pausing once, at listening again will cost you more than you are prepared to spend, long enough to underline it twice.

”That’s not Concord phrasing,” Suresh said when Ethan finished. ”I’ve read their old broadcast archives from the corridor logs. They gloat. They don’t warn.”

”That’s what Kaia said too.”

Suresh looked over at her, still asleep in the chair, and something in his face softened before hardening right back into administrator mode. ”Let her sleep. She was up all night doing your job for you.” He flipped to a fresh page. ”So. What’s the system got?”

Everyone looked at the kettle.

[NOTICE: The system has been trying to answer that question since roughly 4 a.m., has hit the same trace wall eleven consecutive times, and would like everyone to stop looking at it like it is personally failing you.]

”Eleven times,” Ethan repeated.

[NOTICE: Eleven. Clean dead end every time. Same signature signature — which, yes, I am aware that sentence sounds redundant, but I mean it precisely: the wall itself has a pattern. It’s not random static blocking me. It’s built. Deliberately. By someone who has clearly done this exact thing before, to someone else, and refined it.]

Ethan’s stomach did the thing it always did when a piece of information landed wrong-side-up. ”Refined it how many times, though.”

[NOTICE: I don’t know. But I know how to guess, if you’re willing to let me try something I don’t love.]

”Which is.”

[NOTICE: Instead of tracing the wall from the outside — which has failed eleven times and will likely fail a twelfth — I stop pushing against it and start looking at what it’s shaped around. A wall built to hide one specific thing still has an outline. If I map the outline instead of trying to break through it, I might not get who built it.

[NOTICE: But I might get what it’s protecting.]

Kaia stirred awake at that, blinking hard, immediately alert in the specific way of someone whose entire life had trained her to wake up mid-crisis. ”Do it,” she said, before Ethan could even ask. ”Outline-mapping’s slower but it’s clean. It won’t trip whatever alarm a direct trace might.”

Suresh’s pen paused over the page. ”You’re saying the direct traces might have been noticed.”

Nobody answered that right away, which was its own kind of answer.

It took forty minutes. Ethan spent them doing the single most on-brand thing available to him under multiversal pressure: making Wren breakfast.

Not a grand gesture. Not a speech. Just eggs, toast, and the good jam Meenakshi had sent over last week, set down in front of a kid who’d woken up scared and was doing his best impression of someone who wasn’t still scared.

”You don’t have to talk about last night,” Ethan said, sliding the plate over.

Wren looked at it for a second like he was deciding whether trusting the moment was safe. Then he picked up the toast. ”The message,” he said carefully. ”The cold one. Did it use the word ’spoke’?”

”’The one who spoke is not lost.’ Yeah. Why?”

Wren chewed slowly, buying time the way kids did when they were doing math on how much to say. ”Verdant Accord didn’t use ’spoke’ like that. We said ’signaled.’ Or ’reached.’ ’Spoke’ is — ” he frowned, hunting for the word — ”it’s older. Like something from before us. Before the network I remember.”

Ethan filed that away right next to the tide doesn’t cut things off. Two small, precise details, both suggesting the same uncomfortable shape: something predating even Wren’s home. Something old enough to have its own vocabulary that had drifted out of use before the Verdant Accord ever existed.

”[NOTICE:], you getting this?”

[NOTICE: Recording everything, as always, including the eggs, which frankly look better than what I usually watch you eat for breakfast.]

[NOTICE: Also — mapping complete. I’d like everyone’s attention, please, ideally people who are sitting down, because I do not currently have good news and I have run out of ways to deliver bad news gently.]

Ethan didn’t sit down. He never did. But he did put the spatula aside, which was, for him, the equivalent gesture.

[NOTICE: The outline the wall traces around isn’t a location. It’s not a network boundary or a corridor node. It’s a designation. A registry tag — the kind every recognized network gets when the Convergence Authority formally logs it into the system. I found the shape of a tag without being able to read what’s written on it.]

Kaia went very still. ”That means it’s real. Officially real. Not theoretical.”

[NOTICE: It means the Convergence Authority has a file on whoever sent that message. A file old enough, and hidden thoroughly enough, that even accessing its outline nearly cost me the connection twice.]

That was the answer, finally — the one open thread from Chapter 197 resolved. Not a rogue signal. Not a theoretical unlisted network operating entirely off the books. Something known, at least to the one body that tracked every network across every Convergence — known, and buried, deliberately, in a way that took real effort to hide even from something as capable as the system.

Which meant it opened two new, considerably worse questions.

”If the Authority has a file,” Ethan said slowly, ”why would they hide it from us? They’ve been watching our network since before the Grinding. Kaia said the Watcher’s been honest with us, mostly. Why bury this?”

Nobody had an answer.

[NOTICE: I don’t know. And I would like to point out that ”the neutral bureaucratic referee body is hiding files from the people it’s supposedly protecting” is not the sentence I wanted to end breakfast on.]

Suresh, still writing, didn’t look up. ”Second question,” he said flatly. ”If this thing has a registry tag old enough to predate the Verdant Accord’s own language for talking about itself — how many Convergences has it actually been involved in that aren’t in the three the Concord’s publicly undefeated in?”

That landed heavier than anyone probably intended it to.

Wren had gone quiet over his half-eaten toast, listening with the particular stillness of a kid doing math he didn’t want the answer to.

[NOTICE: I want to formally request that nobody ask me to calculate that number until I’ve had considerably longer than forty minutes and possibly a stronger connection than a tea kettle.]

The kettle buzzed once, unprompted, static crawling faintly at its edges — not the beacon, not the cold OBSERVATION formatting. Something new. Something that hadn’t been there a second ago.

[NOTICE: Ethan.]

[NOTICE: The wall I was mapping. It just moved.]

[NOTICE: It’s not hiding a file anymore.

[NOTICE: It’s watching me try to find it — and it just opened, on its own, one single line, and I don’t think it was for you.]

The kettle’s display flickered, and four words resolved, cold and precise and addressed — unmistakably, impossibly — not to Ethan, not to the room, but to the system itself:

[OBSERVATION: You found the outline. Good.]
