Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The Watch’s council session the next morning ran for exactly forty minutes, and Ethan spent most of it fighting the urge to nap through the agenda item about standardized reporting formats for regional stewards.

”That’s it?” he asked, when Kaia formally closed the session. ”That’s genuinely, actually it? No emergency. No ancient entity trying to erase anyone. Just - paperwork.”

”Just paperwork,” Kaia confirmed, smiling. ”I believe this is what functioning governance is actually supposed to look like, most of the time. You should get used to it.”

Ethan sat with that novelty for a long moment, watching delegates file out of the courtyard with the particular unhurried ease of people who had nowhere urgent to be, no crisis demanding their next several hours. It felt, genuinely, like an ending — not the desperate, hard-won conclusion of a battle, but the quieter, more satisfying arrival of something that had simply, finally, stopped needing to fight for its own existence.

He spent the following days doing precisely what he’d promised himself, weeks earlier, that he wanted most — nothing, deliberately, thoroughly, without guilt.

He slept in. He ate breakfast sitting down, slowly, savoring it rather than rushing between crises. He wandered the Citadel watching Kael and Ren, now openly, comfortably together, teaching a training session that had nothing urgent behind it, just the steady, ordinary work of building skill for its own sake. He sat with Malachar and Halvorsen, watching them argue good-naturedly about Instance-9’s own gradual transition, a decade of centralized rule slowly, deliberately giving way to something considerably more distributed and, by every account, considerably healthier.

He visited the bakery, twice in one week, simply because he could, and Meenakshi, unbothered as ever by everything that had happened around her small storefront, greeted him with the same warm, unimpressed familiarity she’d always shown, apocalypse or no apocalypse, multiversal crisis or no multiversal crisis.

”You look rested,” she observed, handing him a fresh pastry without being asked.

”I am rested,” Ethan said, genuinely surprised by how true it felt to say it. ”Actually, properly rested, for the first time in longer than I can remember.”

”Good,” she said simply. ”Don’t let anyone talk you out of that too quickly.”

It was Sundari, gentle as ever, who finally raised the question everyone had been quietly, respectfully avoiding.

”What about Arjun?” she asked, finding Ethan one evening near the World Tree. ”And Candidate Zero, and Kestrel. They’re recovering, genuinely, but slowly. Do you intend to stay involved in that work, or has the Watch’s own structure grown solid enough that it can carry forward without your direct participation?”

Ethan considered the question carefully, feeling the genuine weight of it. ”I want to stay involved,” he said finally. ”Not because they need me specifically. I think you’re right that the structure could probably carry it without me now. But because I actually want to. There’s a difference between being needed and wanting to show up anyway.”

Sundari’s expression softened, something warm and genuinely approving crossing her weathered features. ”That’s precisely the distinction I hoped you’d learn to make.”

”Feels like I’ve been learning it this entire volume,” Ethan admitted. ”One crisis at a time.”

”That’s usually how the important lessons arrive,” Sundari said. ”Slowly, and only in retrospect.”

Arjun found him that same evening, considerably more solid now than at any point since Ethan had first met him, his blurred edges having steadily, gradually settled into something approaching genuine, full presence.

”I wanted to thank you properly,” he said, settling beside Ethan on the low courtyard wall. ”Not for the rescue, though I’m grateful for that too. For teaching me something I never managed to learn in all my centuries of drifting.”

”What’s that?” Ethan asked.

”That refusing power doesn’t have to mean refusing connection,” Arjun said. ”I spent so long believing that saying no to the throne meant I had to disappear entirely, become nothing, drift until there was barely enough of me left to finish a sentence. You showed me it’s possible to say no and still build something. Still matter, to real people, in real, ordinary ways.”

Ethan felt something genuinely moved settle in his chest. ”You’re building that now. Here, with Sundari, with everyone. That’s not nothing.”

”No,” Arjun agreed, a faint, genuine smile crossing his increasingly solid features. ”It’s not.”

Late that night, sitting alone on his own couch — properly reclaimed now, fully grounded, no longer in any danger of being teleported into open sky during a crisis — Ethan finally allowed himself the thing he’d been quietly anticipating for weeks.

He closed his eyes, pulled the blanket up, and let himself drift toward sleep with none of the wary, anticipatory tension that had defined nearly every rest attempt across this entire volume.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring the quiet evening, would like to formally log this moment.]

”Mm,” Ethan mumbled, already half-gone. ”What now.”

[NOTICE: Nothing urgent. The system would simply like to note that this represents the first time, in this entire volume, that it can confidently confirm no active crisis, no lurking countdown, and no unresolved threat awaits the subject upon waking.]

”Good,” Ethan murmured, settling deeper into the couch. ”Keep it that way.”

[NOTICE: The system will do its best.]

He drifted into sleep, deep and genuine and entirely undisturbed, the Citadel settling into its own quiet nighttime rhythm around him — Kael and Ren somewhere nearby, Malachar and Halvorsen finally, properly at rest, Suresh’s clipboard set aside for the evening, the tea golem parked contentedly in its usual spot, and, deep beneath the courtyard, the buried city’s distributed architecture humming softly, patiently, no longer carrying the crushing weight it once had, simply existing, finally, at peace.

It was well past midnight when the system’s voice returned, quiet and careful, clearly reluctant to disturb the first genuinely peaceful sleep Ethan had managed in longer than either of them could properly measure.

[NOTICE: The system apologizes for the interruption. It would not raise this if it believed it could wait until morning.]

Ethan stirred, one eye cracking open, old instinct fighting through the exhaustion. ”What.”

[NOTICE: While conducting routine monitoring of the network’s distributed architecture, the system detected something unusual — not a threat, precisely, but an anomaly it cannot immediately classify.]

”Define unusual,” Ethan mumbled, already half-sitting up despite himself.

[NOTICE: A signal. Faint, distant, originating from somewhere the system’s current access does not extend — beyond the network’s mapped Instances entirely, beyond even the original world’s own foundational boundary.]

Ethan felt the familiar, weary weight of a new mystery settling over the peaceful evening. ”From where, exactly.”

[NOTICE: The system cannot confirm precisely. What it can confirm is the signal’s content — a single, repeating fragment, formatted in a style the system has never encountered before, considerably older even than Candidate Zero’s own earliest archived memories.]

[NOTICE: It reads, simply: ”Something is coming. It has been coming for a very long time. I do not know if this network is ready.”]

Ethan sat fully upright now, sleep entirely forgotten, the Void Sword’s faint, distant hum stirring against the wall where it rested.

”That’s a hell of a thing to hear right after finally getting some sleep,” he said quietly.

[NOTICE: The system agrees. It would recommend, gently, that the subject not act on this tonight — whatever this signal represents, it has apparently been traveling for a very long time already. A few more hours of rest will not meaningfully change the outcome.]

Ethan considered that, exhaustion warring with the old, familiar instinct to chase down every new thread the moment it appeared. Finally, he let out a long, slow breath, and settled back against the couch.

”Okay,” he said. ”Fine. Morning. We figure it out in the morning.”

[NOTICE: The system will hold the investigation until then.]

Ethan closed his eyes again, and despite the fresh, unanswered mystery now sitting quietly at the edge of his mind, sleep found him anyway — the accumulated peace of the past several weeks, the genuine, hard-won stability of everything he’d built, proving, in the end, stronger than his own restless curiosity.

Outside, the Citadel slept on, undisturbed, unaware that somewhere far beyond the mapped edges of everything they’d fought to build and protect, something ancient and patient had just, quietly, finally begun to stir.
