Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Nobody spoke for a long moment after the Watcher’s line finished rendering on the display. Ethan had gotten used to a lot of things over three volumes — cosmic ultimatums, multiversal tournaments, entire planets’ worth of expectation resting on his mostly-unwilling shoulders — but ”the enemy noticed you noticed them, and now they’re speeding up” hit a specific, cold register that none of the previous crises quite had.

Malachar was the first to move, which wasn’t surprising. He’d spent a lifetime reading rooms that were one wrong word from violence, and his voice, when it came, had the same flat control he used to use to run an entire Instance through fear alone — except now it was pointed outward, at a problem, instead of inward at people who trusted him.

”Vanguard,” he said. ”That’s not a name. That’s a designation. Advance element. Something you send ahead of the main force to prepare ground, not to fight the war itself.”

Kaia looked up sharply. ”You know Concord military structure?”

”I know military structure, period. Every network that runs on fear instead of consent builds the same shapes eventually — command, vanguard, enforcement. Doesn’t matter which multiverse you’re in.” Something flickered behind his eyes, old and unpleasant. ”I built some of those shapes myself, once.”

[NOTICE: I would like to point out that this is the single most useful thing anyone has said all morning, and it came from the man whose entire character arc is ”recovering fear-based dictator,” which is either deeply ironic or exactly the kind of narrative pattern this story runs on. I am choosing not to examine that too closely.]

Ethan turned back to the kettle. ”[NOTICE:], can you get anything else out of the Watcher? What the Vanguard’s actual job is. Whether ’moving the timeline up’ means days, weeks—”

[NOTICE: Already asking. Watcher’s response coming through now, and I want to warn everyone in advance that its tone has shifted. It’s not being cagey anymore. I think it’s actually worried, which for a procedural neutral observer entity is its own kind of alarming.]

The display resolved a new block of text, and Ethan noticed immediately that the Watcher had dropped its usual careful phrasing entirely.

[WATCHER RECORD: The Vanguard is not a combat force. I need you to understand that clearly, because I suspect your instinct is to brace for an attack, and that is not what this is.

[WATCHER RECORD: In every prior Convergence I have record of, the Vanguard’s function was assessment. They arrive before formal contact to catalogue a network’s defenses, its unresolvable-class users, its governance structure — everything the main Concord force will need to know in order to win cleanly and quickly once the Convergence formally begins.

[WATCHER RECORD: They do not fight. They do not need to. By the time they finish their assessment, the Concord already knows exactly how the coming Convergence will end.]

That landed worse than an attack would have, somehow. An attack was a thing you could brace against, fight, survive or not survive with some clarity about what you’d been fighting. This was something quieter and colder — someone walking through your home taking inventory of everything you had, everyone you loved, every weakness you didn’t know you had, before you’d even agreed to the fight.

”How long does an assessment usually take?” Priya asked, already thinking in the terms she always thought in — timelines, defenses, what needed shoring up and by when.

[WATCHER RECORD: Historically, weeks. Sometimes longer. It is meant to be thorough.

[WATCHER RECORD: The line I intercepted said the timeline had been moved up. I do not know by how much. But if the Concord is accelerating because your network answered a beacon connected to the Unlisted — an entity they have apparently never managed to account for either — then I would assume the assessment they’re planning is no longer the careful, unhurried version.

[WATCHER RECORD: I would assume it is going to be fast, and it is going to start soon, and it is not going to announce itself when it begins.]

Suresh’s pen had stopped moving several sentences ago. He set it down slowly, looked around the room — at Priya already recalculating patrol coverage in her head, at Malachar’s jaw set tight with old, hard-won knowledge, at Kaia running her hands through her hair like she was trying to physically shake loose a plan — and said, in the flattest voice available to him, ”So somewhere out there, right now, possibly already, someone from a network that’s never lost a Convergence is quietly counting every weakness we have.”

”That’s the gist of it, yeah,” Ethan said.

”I would like it noted that I hate that gist.”

[NOTICE: Your objection has been formally filed alongside mine from earlier. We are building quite a collection.]

That got a short, tired laugh out of a few people in the room — not much, just enough to let some of the pressure out before it built into something worse. Ethan had learned, across two volumes and now most of a third, that you had to let a room do that occasionally or the weight just kept stacking until someone cracked under it at the wrong moment. A little air now was cheaper than a breakdown during an actual crisis later.

He looked over at Wren, still curled on the couch, quiet through all of it, and found the kid watching him with an expression that was working very hard to look calm and mostly succeeding, which was somehow worse than if he’d just looked scared outright.

”Hey,” Ethan said, crouching down in front of him. ”None of this changes what I told you. We’re finding out about the others. That’s still happening.”

”But now there’s a Vanguard,” Wren said. ”Counting things. Finding out how strong you all are before the fight even starts.”

”Yeah.”

”That’s how it happened to us,” Wren said, so quietly it barely carried across the room. ”Before the tide. There was a — a quiet part first. Before the loud part. Nobody noticed the quiet part until it was already too late to matter.”

The room went very still again.

That was the answer this Chapter needed to land — not the full story, not yet, that was still Ch. 243’s to give, but a real piece finally offered without prompting: the destruction of the Verdant Accord hadn’t been sudden. It had a shape. A quiet assessment phase, unnoticed until it was already finished, followed by something Wren still couldn’t bring himself to fully name. And now, for the first time, Wren was recognizing that same shape happening again — here, now, to people he’d only just started letting himself trust.

Ethan didn’t reach for platitudes. He’d learned, the hard way, across two volumes of grief and recovery arcs, that platitudes were for people who hadn’t actually been through the thing you were trying to comfort them about. Wren had been through it. He didn’t need ”it’ll be different this time” from someone who couldn’t promise that.

So instead Ethan just said, ”Then we make sure the quiet part gets noticed. This time. While it’s still happening.”

Wren looked at him for a long moment — really looked, the way he rarely did, ancient eyes steady on Ethan’s face like he was checking whether the sentence had been said carelessly or meant. Whatever he found there, it seemed to settle something in him, at least a little.

[NOTICE: On that note — and I apologize for cutting a genuinely touching moment short, timing has never been my strong suit — I have something the room needs to see immediately.]

The shift in tone was enough that everyone straightened at once.

”[NOTICE:], what.”

[NOTICE: While everyone was talking, I kept a passive trace running on the corridor sector the Watcher flagged — the one closer to the Concord’s approach vector. Low-effort, background process, mostly out of stubbornness after last night’s wall.

[NOTICE: It just returned something. A presence. Not the Vanguard — too small, too localized, moving in a pattern that doesn’t match an assessment sweep at all.

[NOTICE: It’s stationary. It’s close. And based on the signature, it has been sitting there, unmoving, for roughly six hours.]

Kaia’s head snapped toward the display. ”Since when.”

[NOTICE: Since approximately the moment the Unlisted cut contact with us this morning.]

The implication sat there, ugly and obvious, for a beat before anyone said it aloud.

”You’re saying something’s been watching us,” Priya said slowly, ”this whole conversation. Sitting right outside the corridor boundary. Listening to everything we just said about the Vanguard, about Wren, about all of it.”

[NOTICE: I am saying I cannot currently tell if it’s Concord, Authority, Unlisted, or something none of us have a name for yet.

[NOTICE: I am also saying that six hours ago is exactly when it should have started moving if it wanted to leave undetected before this conversation happened.

[NOTICE: And it didn’t move. It’s still there. Right now. Close enough that if I’m reading this signature correctly —

[NOTICE: it’s close enough to be listening to this exact sentence.]

The kettle’s static crackled, sharp and sudden, and every light in Room 404 dimmed for one full second — not flickered, not failed, just dimmed, evenly, deliberately, like something on the other side of that boundary had just acknowledged, without a single word, that it knew it had been found.
