Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

They returned to the Citadel that evening, the fragile bridge behind them collapsing into nothing the moment the last of the expedition crossed back through, and Wren stood in the courtyard for the first time — small, ancient, and visibly overwhelmed by the sheer, ordinary warmth of a place that had never once, in his memory, existed for him before.

The tea golem found him within minutes, rolling up with characteristic, unerring instinct, and deposited a fresh cup into his hands before he’d even finished processing the fact that he was somewhere with functioning kitchens.

”It just — gives you things,” Wren said, staring at the cup with genuine, disbelieving wonder. ”Without being asked.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said, settling beside him on the low wall. ”It’s very good at that. Best decision I ever made, honestly, keeping that thing around.”

Wren sipped the tea carefully, and something in his ancient, weary posture eased, fractionally, at the simple, mundane comfort of it.

But the mysterious presence the system had detected during their crossing sat uneasily over the evening’s otherwise gentle homecoming, and Ethan, once Wren had settled enough to properly talk, raised it as carefully as he could.

”Something else was watching us,” he said. ”Back at the boundary. Not the Watcher, not the Cleansing Concord. The system picked up a signal it couldn’t identify.”

Wren went very still, the warmth of the tea in his hands suddenly forgotten.

”You felt it too,” he said quietly.

”You knew it was there,” Ethan said, not accusing, just gently confirming.

Wren was quiet for a long moment, staring down at his cup, and Ethan recognized, with growing unease, the particular, guarded stillness of someone deciding how much of a difficult truth they were actually ready to share.

”I’ve felt it before,” Wren admitted finally. ”Not often. Just — sometimes, out there, in the space between networks. Something old. Patient. It doesn’t feel the same as the Cleansing Concord. It doesn’t feel like a network at all, honestly. It feels like something that’s been out there longer than any network has existed.”

”Do you know what it is,” Ethan asked.

”No,” Wren said, and the word carried genuine, unmistakable fear beneath its simplicity. ”I don’t. I’ve spent — I don’t even know how long, alone out there, and I never once tried to find out. I was too scared.”

Ethan sat with that for a long moment, feeling the shape of the evening’s warm, hopeful homecoming settle uneasily alongside this fresh, unresolved dread.

”Okay,” he said finally, gently. ”We don’t have to figure that out tonight. You’re safe here. Whatever’s out there, it’s not gonna reach you through the Citadel’s own protections.”

Wren managed a small, uncertain nod, though the fear in his eyes didn’t fully fade.

”There’s something else,” Ethan said carefully, choosing his next words with deliberate gentleness. ”I need to ask you about your own network. Not to pressure you — I meant what I said, you don’t owe us the whole story before you’re ready. But the Watchers, the Cleansing Concord, everyone we’ve talked to keeps referring to it in passing, and I think, eventually, understanding what actually happened to your garden is gonna matter for figuring out what to do about ours.”

Wren’s grip on the teacup tightened, his small, ancient frame going rigid.

”I can’t,” he said quietly. ”Not yet. I want to. I promise I want to, eventually. But every time I try to actually say it out loud, properly, from the beginning — it feels like living through it again. And I don’t think I survive that a second time, not even metaphorically.”

”Then don’t,” Ethan said immediately, firmly. ”You don’t have to. Not tonight, not tomorrow, not until you’re actually ready, whenever that turns out to be. I’m not gonna push you into reliving something that clearly still hurts this much, just because it might be convenient for us.”

Wren looked up at him, something fragile and disbelieving crossing his ancient, exhausted features. ”You mean that.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said simply. ”I do.”

Suresh found them a short while later, clipboard already out — the same familiar, warm ritual that had greeted every new arrival to the Citadel across this entire story — and settled into the practiced, gentle onboarding process with none of the urgency the evening’s earlier revelations might have justified.

”Full name, prior residence, any known allergies,” Suresh said, pen poised, voice carrying its usual patient warmth. ”We can leave sections blank if you’re not ready to fill them in yet. Nobody here’s going to push.”

Wren stared at the clipboard, something in his exhausted, ancient composure finally, genuinely cracking — not from grief this time, but from something closer to overwhelmed, disbelieving relief.

”You’re really just — doing paperwork,” he said. ”Like I’m just a normal person moving in.”

”You are a normal person moving in,” Suresh said simply. ”Whatever else you’ve survived, whatever else you are, right now you’re just someone who needs a place to sleep and something to eat regularly. The rest can wait until you’re ready for it.”

Wren, for the first time since Ethan had met him, managed something that looked, genuinely, like the ghost of a smile.

He settled in over the following days with a fragile, careful gradualness that reminded Ethan of every prior recovery this story had chronicled — Arjun’s slow return to solidity, Candidate Zero’s tentative first steps toward genuine trust, Kestrel’s hesitant emergence from centuries of institutional silence. The golem, sensing something in Wren’s particular loneliness, took to following him around the Citadel with more consistent attention than it showed almost anyone else, and by the third day, the two of them had developed a quiet, comfortable companionship that Ethan found genuinely, deeply touching to witness.

But the underlying mystery — the unidentified presence at the boundary, and whatever exactly had happened to Wren’s own network — remained carefully, deliberately unaddressed, Ethan choosing patience over pressure the same way he had with every prior fragile, recovering entity this story had introduced.

It was on the fourth evening, sitting together near the excavation site while Wren methodically worked his way through a plate of Meenakshi’s pastries with the particular, focused delight of someone experiencing genuine pleasure for what might have been the first time in centuries, that Wren finally, unprompted, offered a small piece of the truth he’d been withholding.

”I can’t tell you what happened,” he said quietly, not looking up from his food. ”Not yet. But I can tell you the name. My garden’s name, before. I think — I think that much I can manage.”

Ethan waited, patient and quiet, giving him the space to continue at his own pace.

”We called it the Verdant Accord,” Wren said finally, the words carrying a weight of careful, deliberate memory. ”Because that’s what my people believed in, back before everything changed. Growth. Connection. The idea that a garden gets stronger the more different things you let grow in it together, instead of pruning everything down to match a single template.”

”That sounds like exactly the kind of place worth remembering,” Ethan said gently.

Wren’s expression flickered, something raw and grateful crossing his ancient, weary features. ”Yeah,” he said quietly. ”It was.”

[NOTICE: The system, quiet through most of the evening, finally interjected, its tone carrying something careful and considered.]

Ethan glanced over. ”What.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to note, respectfully, that it has cross-referenced the name ”Verdant Accord” against every accessible archive fragment, and it has found something worth raising — though it wants to be careful given how fragile this particular conversation clearly is.]

”Go ahead,” Ethan said, keeping his voice low.

[NOTICE: The Threshold Accord’s own oldest records — the same ”other gardens” folklore Kaia recovered earlier — contain a single, brief reference to a network by a similar name, dismissed at the time as coincidental mythology. The fragment describes the Verdant Accord not simply as a garden that was lost, but as one that fought its own Convergence longer, and more fiercely, than any recorded case before or since.]

Wren went very still, setting down his half-finished pastry.

”You knew about us,” he said quietly, staring at nothing in particular. ”Before I ever told you the name.”

[NOTICE: Only a fragment. A myth, largely dismissed as unverifiable. The system did not know it referred to your own home until this exact moment.]

”What does it say,” Wren asked, voice barely above a whisper. ”About how we fought. About how long we lasted.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to read it precisely, given the significance.]

[FRAGMENT, THRESHOLD ACCORD ARCHIVE: ”THE VERDANT ACCORD DID NOT FALL QUICKLY, NOR QUIETLY. THEY RESISTED THE CLEANSING TIDE FOR LONGER THAN ANY PRIOR GARDEN, AND IN THE END, WHAT REMAINED OF THEM WAS NOT SIMPLY ERASED. SOMETHING OF THEIRS SURVIVED, SCATTERED, CARRYING A WARNING FORWARD INTO WHATEVER SPACE REMAINED BETWEEN GARDENS, HOPING SOMEONE, EVENTUALLY, MIGHT ACTUALLY LISTEN.”]

Wren sat in stunned, trembling silence, tears finally, quietly falling, and Ethan reached out, resting a careful hand on his small, shaking shoulder.

”That’s you,” Ethan said softly. ”That’s exactly what you did. You survived, and you kept trying, for however long it took, until someone finally heard you.”

Wren didn’t answer immediately, too overwhelmed to speak, and Ethan simply sat with him, quiet and steady, letting the weight of the moment settle without demanding anything further.

It was several long minutes before Wren finally, shakily, spoke again.

”The archive said ’the Cleansing tide,’” he said quietly. ”Not the Cleansing Concord. The tide.”

Ethan felt something cold settle in his chest at the distinction. ”You think there’s a difference.”

Wren looked up at him, ancient eyes carrying a fresh, terrible weight of understanding.

”I think,” he said slowly, ”the Concord might not be the actual thing that destroyed my garden. I think they might just be the ones who survived it — the same way I did, except they made a very different choice about what to do with what they learned.”
