Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 879: Chapter 675 Negligent Hill

After the Refugee Village received Lynn’s orders, a riot ensued. Fortunately, because the recent enemies faced by the territory have been rather formidable, Lynn demanded that anything done by the City Guards should be done together as an entire squad, even if it’s just delivering a message.

The elf squad, having fought together for hundreds of years, wasn’t something these professionals who dared only to mingle among the refugees could confront. They could only shout unpleasant words, accusing Lynn of having ulterior motives, alleging that the elves wanted to turn the Sea God’s city into their own vassal, loudly proclaiming their dissatisfaction, hoping that the mighty lord above could hear their heartfelt loyalty.

The Elven City Guards, formerly the Elf Crusaders, have always had bad tempers and steadfast wills. When faced with such fools, they didn’t even pause to consider if Hill would doubt Lynn and the elves; instead, they directly started to beat people up.

If it weren’t for the sake of the Goddess Agleya, they would have cut these fools down.

Such nonsense insults not only the loyalty of the elves and Lynn but also the intelligence of their lord. Who thinks everyone is as foolish as humans!

Although most of Agleya’s followers simply watched from a distance during this disturbance, many understood that it would likely be hard for the Refugee Village to receive that lord’s favor now.

Yet their timid retreat in the face of the strong resulted in these ill-meaning nobles and professionals kidnapping their will, and when they handed everything over for others to decide, they had already abandoned their own fate.

So when the elves turned and left, these nobles who knew they had no chance of entering the city started discussing which city to migrate to and where they could hire enough guards, while other villagers suddenly realized that the village they considered adequate for livelihood was seen by these people as inferior to even a big city’s slum.

Many were shaken. These fishermen who spent years in seaside villages and barren small towns were filled with longing for big cities. Hearing the nobles describe Deepwater City as a hundred times more prosperous than Agleya, there was always someone wanting to go and see.

If Lynn could hear some of the conversations here, he would surely realize that the gang members in the inn were not completely eradicated; only they would be interested in these robust ordinary people.

The gangs in Deepwater City, thanks to the Undead Tribe, were extremely short of people.

Of course, Lynn wasn’t aware of just how wise his decision was.

The people Hill fished out from the bay were indeed mostly believers of the Goddess Agleya, but actually, there were also some unfortunate souls thrown from Deepwater City’s port due to space turbulence.

So among those wealthier individuals in the Refugee Village, quite a few had somewhat problematic identities.

When they claimed to be followers of the Goddess Agleya, they didn’t feel guilty. After all, anyone living by the sea, whether rich or poor, would pray to the Goddess of the Sea once they boarded a ship.

Even if the Goddess Agleya were still present, saying this wouldn’t be considered deceiving the deities.

Ever since Agleya’s appearance, everyone who knew of her on the sea would basically direct their pre-voyage prayers to this kind-hearted goddess.

Moreover, this goddess didn’t pay much attention to her followers. As long as there was no major issue, she wouldn’t care about them, no matter how devout they were, so it was comparatively easy to blend into her followers.

Many small nobles from The North actually had more trusted deities, but if they could become officials in the famously welfare-rich Agleya City, they wouldn’t mind changing their Main God to this Sea Goddess at all.

However, they were decisively rejected.

And with the pride of these nobles, if they couldn’t enter the city to obtain a satisfactory status, and since they weren’t entirely penniless, why would they have to stay in this small village!

Originally, there had been people from other cities trying to recruit them, especially from Deepwater City. A thousand people were a significant addition to any city, except Agleya City. ... That particular Mage Lord, though powerful, was too proud to even bother with ordinary people!

Eventually, he will be driven out by the elves! The Teraxil Elves are still elves!

The nobles discussed in discontent, beginning to recruit professionals, pooling money to hire the adventurers staying in the inn as guards, preparing to head to Deepwater City.

The most proactive among them was a noblewoman in a light purple robe with her daughter. She had always kept herself and her child well hidden in the crowd; otherwise, if Lynn were to notice them, he would realize that something was slightly off about the composition of these refugees.

And Hill... even if he saw, he wouldn’t think there was anything wrong with the purple robes.

Of course, this lady also possessed some strange objects that could threaten most people, especially some Alchemical Bombs, which were currently a threat to anyone. So, in dealing with her, the nobles and professionals behaved courteously.

Of course, this lady herself was also quite charming, very enticing in her gestures, so she quickly secured a good position within this group preparing to migrate.

A beautiful and powerful woman will always receive some more favorable conditions.

But to speak of it, this noble lady’s daughter was truly the beautiful one. She had a pair of dark, sparkling eyes and brown curly hair cascading down to her waist. Though not very old, she had a captivating charm, convincing everyone who saw her that she would grow up to be a great beauty of extraordinary allure.

It’s a pity she’s a bit too young; otherwise, perhaps that Lord of Agleya might have fallen for her at first sight. Such a pity.

Many were firmly convinced of the young lady’s future allure, especially upon discovering that she had already advanced to an official Mage at such a young age.

Many of the Agleya followers who were somewhat shaken still left with them: loving one’s own goddess is one thing, having to endure poverty and hardship is quite another.

The faith of the Toril people... it’s actually just that, so although Lynn received the wrong information, the decision he made was quite correct.

Of course, this might have something to do with his being a God’s Chosen himself. Lynn himself is most clear about his own attitude towards Miliel.

He also knew very well that most deities do not truly require devout believers, but rather those who are useful to them.

So Lynn completely disbelieves the popular rule in Toril: that believers who gain the affirmation of the deities are trustworthy.

Even though he was mentally prepared, when Lynn discovered that the village, originally close to having a thousand people, had five hundred people ready to leave after he refused those who self-recommended, he was still somewhat furious.

If it weren’t for his habit of acting with a clear conscience, he wouldn’t care about being accused of wanting to infringe on the lord’s rights or even wanting to undermine Hill, he might really have accepted some Agleya followers into the city hall, and now he would probably be dumbfounded?

Lynn stood at the high top of the city hall, coldly watching the crowd gathering on the side of the Green Forest, silently canceling some of the work he had designed for the Refugee Village.

This was his oversight. He actually forgot that Agleya’s faith had appeared too recently and did not have a solid enough foundation. These so-called devout believers need more testing.

Wait until a year later, if those who remain in the Refugee Village can still maintain their reverence for Agleya, then it will be time to consider whether to accept them into the city’s workforce.

Lynn sighed, he had thought too simply.

But he had seen Hill tear a giant dragon with his own eyes, and really couldn’t imagine which other lord in such turbulent times would be more trustworthy than Hill.

Lynn let out a cold laugh, go to Deepwater City?

If that place is attacked by a giant dragon, there won’t be anyone like Hill to stand against it. Those alchemical weapons that could threaten the dragons would only be used in the noble district.

Moreover, the gangs in Deepwater City are at their most active now, and the mages are probably hiding in the Magic Towers?

These former fishermen and sailors, if not clever enough when they get there, will only meet their demise.

In a place rampant with thieves and assassins, the outcome for civilians or low-level professionals who go there is obvious to anyone who thinks carefully, yet these people were still tempted by the nobles with their glib tongues, completely losing their guard and rationality. If they die, they deserve it.

But... did Hill misunderstand something? Those nobles among the refugees don’t seem like people who would believe in such a pure goddess as Agleya?

Lynn hesitated for a while but decided to ask his lord what judgment he had made. Was there something wrong somewhere?

When asked, Hill thought for a long time, blinking his eyes, and then suddenly realized, saying: ”Ah! I overlooked this, the Dimensional Gate for the magic ship passage on the side of Deepwater City’s port was also broken.

These people might have just passed by there and got thrown over by the space storm!

As long as they’re not from the Evil Faction, they could float into the port’s range, so it’s probably because of this they got saved by the puppet...

Sorry, Lynn, I was too careless, fortunately, nothing happened.”

Lynn helplessly looked at Hill, he really believed Hill’s nonsense! Otherwise, if he had paid a bit more attention, he would have noticed the problem long ago.

As for accidents... these people aren’t stupid enough to offend a lord who can kill a giant dragon barehanded, they cursed Lynn from beginning to end.

The nobles want power, they won’t risk their lives over something like this.

They dared to do this only because Hill is of the Kind Alignment, who wouldn’t kill just for a little offense.

”I always somewhat overlook ordinary people, you know, to me they are more like symbols, I will strive to pay attention to their survival and safety, but it’s hard to keep them in mind.

The tiny Life Fire they possess, when I observe with spiritual power, is no different from the surrounding forest animals.

Anyway, whether or not they are Agleya’s followers makes no difference,” Hill said indifferently, ”I would give them a chance to live, but that’s about it.

If you encounter someone useful, you use them.

But the reason for using someone must be their abilities, the least necessary reason is being an Agleya follower.”
