Caught in Affairs with Superstar

Chapter 1432: Chapter 744: Unable to Power On

”I just didn’t expect that Song Chi would start his own company so quickly.”

Wei Weicheng said.

Zhou Yun: ”He wants to have some control over his own destiny.”

”I know. When he was with Zuo Jing, I told him that if he wanted to be a pure actor and be less restricted by a company, he should break away from Zuo Jing as soon as possible. That company only sees him as a cash cow.”

Zhou Yun didn’t respond.

She didn’t know what to say.

Wei Weicheng’s words left her at a loss.

Because it seemed that Wei Weicheng’s relationship with Song Chi was more familiar than she had thought.

After all, with such words, usually you wouldn’t say these things unless you were close, right?

But Zhou Yun couldn’t figure out whether Wei Weicheng said those things because he was close to Song Chi or simply because, as Zhou Yun just thought, he was just someone who speaks his mind.

Zhou Yun had also just met him, yet he would say such things directly.

”Why didn’t you take on a role in his company’s film?” Wei Weicheng suddenly asked.

The question came so unexpectedly that Zhou Yun was stunned.

Wei Weicheng looked at her and asked, ”Is it to avoid suspicion? Song Chi just started a company; wouldn’t he need your help?”

Strangely, although the question sounded like questioning, Wei Weicheng didn’t give off a questioning vibe.

It seemed like he was purely curious.

Zhou Yun said, ”Why does everyone think Song Chi needs my help? Even without my help, hasn’t he managed the company well?”

”Well?” Wei Weicheng looked surprised, ”But isn’t he producing some very boring films? Is that what you call well?”

Zhou Yun was at once rendered speechless and couldn’t say anything.

When she said Song Chi managed the company well, she meant that the company ran smoothly and had profits.

But Wei Weicheng was criticizing that the films produced by Song Chi’s company were all dull and lacked artistic value.

Zhou Yun really didn’t know how to respond.

She said, ”The market is quite large; different films have their own demand.”

”But he is Song Chi,” Wei Weicheng said, ”Shouldn’t his company produce more ambitious and high-quality films?”

”Then why did you agree to star in ’Conspicuous and Trouble’?” Zhou Yun asked, ”According to you, isn’t this also a film without much artistic pursuit?”

Wei Weicheng: ”Who says that? I really like this story.”

”You see, every film has different evaluations from different people. What you think is good, I might not think is good; what you think is bad, I might think is good. Why measure all works by one standard? The key is that those who like it like it enough, isn’t that enough?”

”You’re just making excuses. If I like a work, I will do everything possible to make it better. But has Song Chi’s company done that?” Wei Weicheng said, ”Except for ’Mother’ which was quite good, aren’t all other films just ordinary stuff? Who will remember those films after ten years?”

”Wei Weicheng, by your logic, many films should not be made because there are only a few that stand the test of time. One thing I really dislike is that many people always comment from a high ground, with a seemingly correct and ambitious posture, on the uneven market. Unevenness is the norm in the market. If all we had were masterpieces, it wouldn’t be a market; it would be an exhibition. Actually, we all know that only under a normal market mechanism can good works be produced continuously. We know that not every work we produce will succeed, nor will every one become a classic. That’s too rare. But can this be our reason to be picky? If, as you say, it seems to be a flop from the start and thus shouldn’t be made, then there would be no dark horses, and the market would be entirely controlled by mature directors and actors.”

Wei Weicheng said, ”That’s not what I meant at all.”

”I know that’s not what you meant, but what you’re saying leads to that,” Zhou Yun said very seriously. ”Even ’Ashes of Time’ had to rely on ’The Eagle Shooting Heroes’ to get made. If a company cannot be profitable, how long can it last? Which film company can survive just by making good films?”
