Caught in Affairs with Superstar

Chapter 1041: Chapter 605: New Opportunities

Zhou Yun actually didn’t know anyone from HBO, but there were indeed some acquaintances he could ask for help to inquire about them.

Without much thought, Zhou Yun nodded and said to Jiang Yuzhen, ”Yuzhen, I understand. I’ll send some emails to a few friends later to ask them to help inquire.”

Jiang Yuzhen said, ”Thank you.”

Zhou Yun shook his head and said, ”No trouble at all, it’s a small matter.”

When Zhou Yun was seeing Jiang Yuzhen off, he happened to run into Song Chi coming back.

”Yuzhen,” Song Chi did not expect to see Jiang Yuzhen coming out of Zhou Yun’s room and greeted her.

After Song Chi went into the room with Zhou Yun, he asked, ”Why did she come to you at noon? Is there something going on?”

Zhou Yun briefly explained to Song Chi about Jiang Yuzhen’s visit.

Song Chi was a bit surprised and said, ”What a coincidence.”

”Why?” Zhou Yun asked.

Song Chi said, ”Director Kang had me review a script, which was also sent to him by a major platform in the United States, wanting him to be the director.”

”Huh?” Zhou Yun was taken aback.

Song Chi said, ”It’s NF. They have taken an interest in the theme of Chinese mythology and want to develop a fantasy series set against this backdrop to air on NF.”

NF is the largest streaming platform globally, with hit series appearing in batches every year, and its audience numbers are quite intimidating.

Song Chi explained, ”They want Director Kang to direct it, and he’s still hesitating, so he wants me to help review the script.”

”Is the script completed?”

”The first draft,” Song Chi said, ”The entire world setting has been constructed. Initially, they intended to recruit from directors they’ve previously collaborated with, but since this is a purely Chinese mythology theme, none of their targeted directors were willing to take it on, fearing it might go wrong.”

Zhou Yun said, ”No director dares to take it?”

”Yes,” Song Chi nodded, ”So they had to look for directors in China, and Director Kang Xin is among our finest TV directors, so they approached him.”

Zhou Yun asked, ”Is Director Kang interested in doing it?”

”Although Director Kang said he hasn’t decided yet, I think he wants to take on this project,” Song Chi said, ”For Director Kang, this is an opportunity to go global.”

”Indeed.”

”TV series are inherently harder to break into international markets compared to films, especially in Europe and America,” Song Chi said, ”It’s obvious what a big temptation this is for Director Kang.”

At Director Kang Xin’s level, he has essentially reached the top in the domestic sphere, with no further space for upward movement.

He’s already a renowned director and even among the top-tier directors.

But within the Chinese TV industry, he lacks channels to further expand his influence.

Chinese TV series generally only extend to a few Southeast Asian countries, but struggle to go much further.

”Heart Inquiry” stirred up a frenzy of viewership and discussion in China, but it unsurprisingly faced a cold reception abroad. This is a limitation of both the subject matter and the distribution channels.

No overseas platform is willing to invest substantial promotion resources in Chinese-language dramas.

Because pouring substantial promotional resources doesn’t yield corresponding returns.

No Chinese-language drama has yet had a work with global influence—though this shouldn’t be used to evaluate the artistic achievements of Chinese dramas, anyone creating content, or entities, surely harbors ambitions of reaching more audiences.

The initial intent behind the vast majority of creations is to resonate with more people.

”Then for this series, if Director Kang directs, will he bring you in to act?” Zhou Yun asked.

Song Chi shook his head and said, ”Director Kang hasn’t talked to me about this, but if he asks me, I would act.”

”So ultimately you are also suggesting that Director Kang should direct this series, right?” Zhou Yun asked.

”Yes,” Song Chi nodded.

Zhou Yun thought that Director Kang Xin probably intends to invite Song Chi to star in the series.

If not for this idea, the director likely wouldn’t have asked Song Chi to review the script.

This must be a large production, with no small investment, and NF’s past film and series strategy basically involves top directors and actors, rather than newcomers.

Facing such a never-before-attempted project, Director Kang Xin would naturally feel somewhat uneasy, and if Song Chi were to star, it would alleviate much of the pressure.

After all, Song Chi has collaborated with him numerous times, and they are well-acquainted.

Zhou Yun was thinking that if it’s about creating a fantasy series based on Chinese mythology, there should be many roles to fill.
