Chapter 304: Chapter 266: Ascent: 102

Zhou Lan raised her head, looked at Zhou Yun, opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

Zhou Yun realized that something serious must have happened. She walked over and sat down beside Zhou Lan, asking, ”Sister Lan, what happened?”

Zhou Lan’s pupils seemed hollow, staring straight at Zhou Yun, as if trying to peer into her eyes. This made Zhou Yun feel especially uneasy, and even somewhat creeped out.

Zhou Lan said, ”That person who has been secretly following you, trying to sneak into your room, he’s dead.”

”Dead?”

Zhou Yun was completely stunned, at a loss, and it took her a long while to regain her composure.

”He had a cerebral hemorrhage, he’s dead,” Zhou Lan said, ”They told me about last night’s event just now.”

The two exchanged looks.

Zhou Yun opened her mouth as if to say something, but then found she couldn’t say anything. She didn’t know what to say.

”The police found many photos of you on his phone, all taken while he was stalking and secretly photographing you,” Zhou Lan said, ”According to their investigation, he had been following you for a long time.”

Zhou Yun felt a chill all over.

Someone had been following her for a long time without her knowledge. Just the thought of it sent shivers down her spine.

”Sister Lan, what did that person look like? Are there any photos?” Zhou Yun asked.

Zhou Lan shook her head, saying, ”There are no photos left, I’ll go ask the police handling this case.”

”But, do you really want to know what he looked like?” Zhou Lan looked at Zhou Yun, worried, ”He’s already dead, knowing how he looked won’t matter anymore.”

”No, I have to know what he looked like, he’s been stalking me for so long, I have to find out who he was,” Zhou Yun said.

That was just her personality. If she didn’t know who the person was, she wouldn’t sleep well at night, her thoughts would run wild, she wouldn’t be at peace during the day, suspicious of everyone around her. Only by knowing who that person was, could she truly feel at ease ”seeing is believing”.

Zhou Lan sighed, nodded her head, and walked to the other side to make a phone call.

Zhou Yun, as if by some strange impulse, thought of the text messages she had received before. She took out her phone and looked for them.

The last message had been from the previous year, and then they had stopped, with no more messages since.

Could these messages have been from that person?

Was it him?

Who was he really, and why did he do it?

Just thinking about how the person almost entered her room, Zhou Yun immediately got goosebumps.

At this moment, a weak voice tinged with the grogginess of just waking up sounded from beside her: ”Sister Xiao Yun, what’s wrong? Did something happen?”

Zheng Xiaojue finally woke up.

The young girl rubbed her eyes and yawned.

Zhou Yun managed a hasty, gentle smile, shook her head, and said it was nothing.

At that instant, she impulsively didn’t want the young girl to know what had really happened.

Zhou Lan finished the phone call and came back into the room.

”Xiao Yun, I got his picture.”

Zhou Yun’s heart, which had softened because of Zheng Xiaojue, suddenly tensed up again.

She said, ”Sister Lan, send it to me.”

”Are you sure you want me to send it to you? Why don’t you just look at it on my phone?” Zhou Lan said.

Zhou Yun thought about it, didn’t argue further on this matter, and nodded.

Zhou Lan handed over the smartphone.

Holding it in her hand, Zhou Yun saw a somewhat familiar face appear from the screen, surfacing from the depths of her long-buried memories.

Her pupils trembled slightly.

Zhou Lan had been closely watching Zhou Yun’s reaction. Seeing her like this, Zhou Lan asked, ”Do you know this person?”

After a long silence, Zhou Yun finally spoke: ”He was my neighbor when I was a child.”

Zhou Yun did indeed remember this person; she remembered him very well. In her childhood, her father would beat her for the slightest reason, and sometimes while drunk, he would curse her as bad luck, even forcing her out of the house. During those times, she would often sit alone in the stairwell, where she occasionally saw him come and go. Seeing her sitting there alone, he seemed to understand what had happened, yet also as if he knew nothing, occasionally offering her a kind smile, occasionally pulling a few pieces of candy from his pocket, or bringing some packets of cookies from his home for her.

Although they were but trifling acts of kindness, for a long time, Zhou Yun had been grateful and remembered his goodness. Eventually, she ran away from home and moved to her grandmother’s place, never returning. Sometimes, Zhou Yun would still think of that uncle from the neighbor’s house.

Who would have imagined, it was actually him?

He had aged, his face lined with wrinkles, and put on some weight, but she could still recognize the face from her past.

As Zhou Yun looked at him, memories of the dark times of her childhood cascaded back, an oppressive atmosphere enveloping her.

”You’re nothing but a losing bet!”

”Bad luck! If it weren’t for you, how could your mother have died!”

”Get out! Get out!”

...

In her now fuzzy memories, that coarse, fierce scolding still rang in her ears, as if a beer bottle might at any moment fly across the memories’ expanse from the other end.

If she didn’t dodge in time, that beer bottle would hit her head.

Zhou Yun returned the phone to Zhou Lan, biting her lips uncertainly, and said, ”I’m going to take a shower.”

Zhou Lan nodded.

After Zhou Yun entered the bathroom, Zheng Xiaojue looked up naïvely and asked, ”Sister Lan, what’s wrong? Sister Xiao Yun doesn’t look very well. She’s not sick, is she?”

Zhou Lan raised her hand and knocked on Zheng Xiaojue’s forehead.

”Don’t talk nonsense. Get up and go back to your room.”

”Oh.” Zheng Xiaojue responded dully, nodded, got out of bed, and left.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, Zhou Lan gazed worriedly at the bathroom door and sighed.

She didn’t know what kind of impact this would have on Zhou Yun.

All she hoped for was that Zhou Yun could recover quickly.

Fortunately, by some twist of fate, Song Chi had come over at this time. Zhou Lan thought that having Song Chi by her side should make Zhou Yun feel much better.

Another question popped up: Should she tell Song Chi about this?

Twenty minutes later, Zhou Yun emerged from the bathroom with a fresh glow on her face.

She appeared to have returned to normal, drying her hair with a towel and even smiling at Zhou Lan.

”Has Xiaoju gone back to her room? Sister Lan, you should go back too, I’m fine now,” Zhou Yun said. ”I was just a bit shocked. I didn’t expect that person to be someone I knew.”

Zhou Lan shrugged and said, ”It’s okay, I’m just here to say sorry.”

”Ah?” Zhou Yun asked, ”Why would you suddenly apologize out of nowhere?”

Zhou Lan said, ”I told Song Chi about this without your permission.”

Zhou Yun was taken aback.

Zhou Lan continued, ”I know you definitely wouldn’t agree with me telling Song Chi, and I know you don’t want him to know, but I told him anyway. You can blame me and get angry at me; I accept it. Alright, now I’m going back to my room.”
