Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 337: Chapter 333 Warning, Warning, Rival in Love Appears!

So on the second day of the kidnapping case, early in the morning, Miss Huo Sining and her group prepared to visit the Yan Residence once again.

But before they could leave the hotel, they received a phone call. Huo Sining took the phone and saw it was from an unfamiliar number. Puzzled, she still pressed the button to answer.

”May I ask if this is Miss Huo Sining?”

A strange man’s voice came from the other end of the phone.

”Who is this?” Huo Sining furrowed her brow and asked in surprise.

”Hello, I am Captain Chen Xiaolong from the Hetian Police Department.”

”Hello.” Huo Sining raised an eyebrow, not understanding what this Captain Chen wanted with her.

”Here’s the thing, we investigated yesterday’s case and there are a few doubts that haven’t been cleared up, so we would like to understand the situation from you. I wonder if Miss Huo would find it convenient to come to our police station?”

Chen Xiaolong spoke in an official tone, but he was well aware that the kidnapping case, whether he continued to investigate or not, would quickly conclude with the establishment of the criminals’ guilt and their subsequent sentencing.

The reason he was making this call was to investigate how this girl named Huo Sining managed to escape from the kidnappers. He was interested in her because he thought there were many secrets hidden behind her, so he made up this public-serving private excuse.

”Captain Chen, didn’t your chief call yesterday to say that there were no doubts left in the case and that it would be closed soon?”

Chen Xiaolong thought Huo Sining was just an eighteen or nineteen-year-old girl who could be bluffed with a serious and official tone, but little did he know that Huo Sining was not fooled at all.

”The case can be closed, but there are some doubts that still need to be clarified. We need to record them in our case-closing report.” Chen Xiaolong’s face stiffened, he exhaled, and it took some effort before he could force out his words.

Huo Sining smiled, ”This procedure doesn’t seem to be in the case investigation protocol, does it? I have no objection if Captain Chen insists on inquiring, but I’m already preparing to return to S City and might not have the time.”

Chen Xiaolong felt annoyed, ”Miss Huo, I hope you can cooperate with our police department’s investigation.”

Huo Sining laughed, ”I am a victim who provoked no one and was kidnapped out of nowhere. All I hope for is a fair resolution from your police department. I have only heard of investigations of criminal suspects, not of victims as well?”

Chen Xiaolong cursed inwardly, but still had to maintain a smile and said gently, ”Under normal circumstances, there is no such thing, but we are not clear about your self-rescue process, so we wanted to understand the situation.”

Huo Sining knew this policeman had no good intentions. She said irritably:

”Didn’t I already explain the self-rescue process in detail yesterday? The two pieces of evidence, the fruit knife and the spray, were also handed over to you. You didn’t rescue me in time, so I had to think of a way to escape myself. You don’t reflect on your failures as police officers, but now you instead come to trouble me, the victim. Isn’t that funny?”

Chen Xiaolong was scolded by Huo Sining until his face turned red. His rebuttal was stuck in his throat, and just as he was about to explain, Huo Sining said coldly on the other end:

”I have other things to handle and no time to explain those issues to you. If you don’t have anything else to ask, I’m hanging up!”

”Hello--” Chen Xiaolong had barely said a word when a busy tone ’beep beep beep’ sounded from the phone.

Huo Sining had hung up the phone!

Chen Xiaolong’s face immediately darkened, the shadow in his eyes deepened, but the corners of his mouth slightly curved upwards.

If Huo Sining could calmly describe to him the process of her escape after the kidnapping, he might have dropped his suspicions and ceased his investigation.

However, the way this girl was beating around the bush, steadfastly avoiding explaining how she escaped, affirmed his belief: Huo Sining was harboring guilty secrets!

Seeing that Huo Sining looked somewhat flustered after hanging up, Gu Xu sensed something amiss and quickly asked, ”What’s wrong? Who was that on the phone?”

Huo Sining was somewhat dejected, ”Captain Chen Xiaolong from Hetian Police Department. He said he wanted to talk to me about the details of the kidnapping case. Didn’t the chief of Hetian say the case could be closed yesterday?”

Gu Xu frowned, ”That was the case. The matter is straightforward, with ample motive and both eyewitness and physical evidence sufficient; the suspect is already determined, there’s no need for further investigation.”

”Are you sure it’s really okay to close the case?” Huo Sining asked uneasily, feeling a persistent sense of unease.

”Positive!” Knowing what Huo Sining was worried about, Gu Xu smiled reassuringly, ”Don’t worry, everything is fine. I’ve already instructed Yu Cheng; he knows what to do.”

Huo Sining’s grave expression finally softened, ”That’s good. Then there’s no problem in directly refusing the captain’s request, right?”

Gu Xu nodded but a shadow flashed across his eyes. Chen Xiaolong huh, he noted.

Feeling relieved, Huo Sining and the others headed towards the Yan Residence, but the visit turned out to be in vain; Master Yan was not at home. Instead, an old butler was there, and upon learning that they came to request Master Yan’s help, he asked the same question as during the first visit.

The group gave a few haphazard answers, but the butler still shook his head. Bai Yishan utterly lost hope, once again leaving disappointed. She no longer fixated on seeking help from the jade carving master and decided to think of other approaches after returning.

Only after Huo Sining and her group had left did Yan Feng emerge from behind the rockery in the courtyard, raising his eyebrows at Su Lan, ”Are you sure she is the Ice Spirit Master?”

Su Lan’s face soured, ”Who else could it be? But something’s off. Even though that girl got the Ice Spirit Bead to recognize her as its master, she can’t fully unleash its power. She’s still a fledgling, only knows some trivial tricks.”

Yan Feng gave a noncommittal smile, ”So what exactly are you proposing by coming to me?”

”What do I mean? My sister is about to be taken by a pig, and you can’t just stand by and watch. I have important business to attend to, so the glorious task of protecting my sister, I leave to you!” Su Lan glared venomously at the distant Gu Xu.

Yan Feng raised his eyebrows, ”You want me to undermine him? That’s not my style!”

Su Lan snorted coldly, half-threatening, ”Don’t forget, without me, do you think you could return to Cang Hai?”

Yan Feng’s expression paused, he glanced sideways at the smug Su Lan, then shrugged his shoulders, ”Fine, wielding a hoe doesn’t bother me.”

On the way back, Bai Yishan was still conflicted. But upon returning to the small inn, she saw a man sitting on a stone bench at the entrance. At his feet, the neat-freak lion laid in the grass, idly scratching its head in an indifferent manner.

The visitor was none other than Yan Feng, the master jade carver who had twice sent them away empty-handed.
