Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 336: Chapter 332: Being Targeted

The person on the other end of the phone even claimed that if the hostages couldn’t be rescued safely, he would be ready to take the blame, resign, and roll up his bedding to get lost.

The Hetian Bureau Director couldn’t sit still where was he, well aware of what those Wei District extremists were capable of? Let alone ordinary citizens, even Hetian police officers got cold feet when facing them, and had to be extremely cautious.

The director was terrified and wanted to rescue the hostages immediately, but feared that agitating the kidnappers would endanger their lives. He was so anxious that he was running around in circles until, after his ordeal at the Moyu River, he learned that the hostages had escaped on their own.

The director breathed a sigh of relief, as the metaphorical knife that had been hanging over his neck disappeared, and he finally felt secure in his position.

As long as his official cap was safe, he couldn’t care less whether the case had any loose ends. Those radicals would definitely not have been wrongly accused; they got what they deserved.

As for how the hostages escaped and where the tools for their escape came from, he wasn’t concerned and didn’t think these were the focus of the case. More importantly, for someone from the Imperial Capital to call and inquire about the incident indicated that the hostage’s identity was extraordinary, and he didn’t dare investigate further.

But Chen Xiaolong was different. He had been transferred to the Hetian Police Department from the criminal investigation team. From the start of his career, he had a pathological obsession with every case, believing that if there were unanswered questions within a case, further investigation was required.

In this kidnapping case, he felt there was something off about the hostage.

According to the victim’s account, the kidnapping involved the use of a child to lure the hostage into an alley, where they were then subdued with anesthetic gas and kidnapped.

But given the suddenness of the event, the victims should have been unsuspecting. So how could she have had a fruit knife and spray canister on her person for no reason? Could she have known in advance that something was going to happen?

Furthermore, even if a woman was strong, how could she possibly drag three men over ten kilometers and throw the kidnappers into the river? Additionally, according to the kidnappers’ testimonies, the time between these events was extremely short, almost in the blink of an eye.

If all three were lying, why would their testimonies completely match up? It’s important to note that before being rescued, the three kidnappers were floating in the river, with several kilometers between them, leaving no chance or conditions to collaborate on their story.

Moreover, Chen Xiaolong carefully observed the facial expressions and eye movements of the three kidnappers during the interrogation and confirmed they were confused and doubtful, but they were not lying.

”Director, should we summon the hostage to ask about the situation?”

This case was too odd, and Chen Xiaolong was filled with doubts about the hostage named Huo Sining.

”No need, just close the case. The hostage has a special status, not only is the Imperial Capital taking an interest, but so is the Northwestern Military Region. This case wasn’t a difficult high-tech case to begin with, a simple judgment will suffice.”

The director waved his hand, signaling the end of the case.

Chen Xiaolong’s expression froze, wanting to say something else, but the director had already turned and walked away, busy the entire day, he hadn’t even had a meal, nearly at the cost of his life.

Chen Xiaolong’s face looked somewhat unpleasant as he leaned tiredly in his office chair, staring at the freshly delivered printed report, his frown deepening.

Full of doubts, he was unable to explain how the hostage had managed to save herself. To write the report, he would have to gloss over this part ambiguously.

Was this case really closed?

Chen Xiaolong reached out to his computer, quickly logged into a system, and entered the name Huo Sining. Before long, after filtering through the information, he found the personal data of the individual.

A color photo appeared in front of him, it was of a very pretty girl, innocent and blushing with embarrassment. The information showed she was born in Bashu, orphaned with no backing, and had just moved to S City to attend university six months ago.

Chen Xiaolong slowly exhaled smoke, gazing through the hazy mist at the blurred photo on the computer, which seemed to lend an air of mystery to the girl’s image.

After some thought, he made a phone call, ”Agu, help me investigate someone. I’ve sent you the information. I need a reply as soon as possible.”

The response on the other side was swift. Less than half an hour later, he received an email.

Upon opening the email, Chen Xiaolong was deeply shocked.

In less than a month after arriving in S City, the girl had bought a storefront for four million. Later, she opened a fish shop.

That wasn’t all, soon after, she transferred to S University Department of Biology and, at the November Betta competition, won the project naming rights from the S City Biological Research Institute with a pair of purebred Huaxia Koi, earning herself a five percent share of the dividends.

Having grown up under the care of a rural uncle after being orphaned, how had she come upon four million yuan?

Chen Xiaolong asked himself. Given a month to earn four million yuan, he knew he would be incapable of it.

And on top of that, this girl had caught the attention of the higher-ups in the Imperial Capital and the Northwest Military Region. An orphaned young lady with no influence at all, how did she do it? Or was there some unspeakable identity hidden behind her?

Chen Xiaolong took a deep drag on his cigarette and pressed the butt into the ashtray.

The investigation showed that the girl’s record was like a blank sheet of paper, suspiciously clean.

A startling intuition in the depths of his heart told him that this girl named Huo Sining was far from the seemingly innocent and harmless person she appeared to be, even suggesting the kidnappers themselves had fallen into her trap.

The Bureau Director had already ordered him to stop the investigation, and higher-ups had obviously put pressure on him, indicating very clearly that the case was not to be pursued further.

But was he really going to stop investigating?

No, that wasn’t his style. He had never believed in the power of wealth and influence theory. Since joining the police force, he had held firm to one belief: fairness and justice were as clear as spring water, irrespective of how noble one’s status could be, in front of the law, everyone was equal.

A faint glimmer sparked in Chen Xiaolong’s eyes as he lit another cigarette. In the darkness of night, the red glow of the cigarette end flickered, bright and dim by turns.

At this time, Huo Sining had no idea that, because she had exposed a flaw by punishing the kidnappers, she had attracted the attention of an obsessive police officer.

The kidnapping had not only shaken Huo Sining, but Su Qingqing and Bai Yishan were also affected to various degrees.

Although the gang of thugs, along with the entire gang, had been uprooted by the Hetian Police Department, it wasn’t guaranteed that there weren’t any fish that slipped the net. For safety’s sake, the trip to Hetian could no longer continue.

However, the purpose of their trip had not been achieved. Bai Yishan was filled with disappointment and reluctance. Huo Sining, of course, knew what was on her mind. Hence, before returning, she decided to accompany Bai Yishan to the Yan Residence once more.
