Dimensional Codex System: I'm really not a cultist!

Chapter 779: Chapter 778: A Mysterious Band

”This is the place where that DJ zombie played music.”

Early the next morning, Fang Zheng, along with Rea and Walnut, revisited the scene, returning to the Red Brick Warehouse.

Perhaps due to the death of the DJ zombie or some other reason, the previously gathered zombie horde had completely vanished. Hence, this time, Fang Zheng and the others didn’t need to waste time—they drove straight to the entrance of the Red Brick Warehouse, then opened the door and went back to where they had fought the DJ zombie.

”Right here... It seems that guy was playing music right here.”

Pushing open the doors and seeing the interior mostly unchanged, Fang Zheng breathed a sigh of relief. It was fortunate that he had decided to not burn the place down just to scare the DJ zombie; otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to find anything.

”Do you remember this place?”

”..........”

Upon hearing Fang Zheng’s question, Walnut furrowed her brow and looked around before slowly shaking her head.

In fact, Fang Zheng had many questions about Walnut. The girl had clearly died once, a fact confirmed by Walnut herself, so there was no mistake. But the problem was how she had appeared at the DJ zombie’s side afterward, and looking at Walnut’s condition at the time, she was clearly acting as a bodyguard for the DJ zombie. Moreover, there was that iron chain around her neck... Walnut didn’t remember any of this, and naturally, Fang Zheng had no answers either.

Sometimes I really envy Kurumi’s angel...

Thinking this, Fang Zheng inwardly lamented. If Kurumi were here, she could simply fire the ”Tenth Bullet” from her angel Chronos at Walnut or the iron chain that had bound her, and then they could immediately know everything that had happened during this period.

Although both Fang Zheng and Kurumi manipulated the power of time, their abilities were not the same. Kurumi’s Chronos was completely a skill specialization; her angel only had twelve types of bullets, and they had to hit to take effect. Nevertheless, in terms of utility, sometimes her abilities could even be more useful than Fang Zheng’s time manipulation, which was too free and sometimes left him uncertain how best to use it.

For instance, Fang Zheng had been developing his Time Ability for so long, and he had developed only the One Sword, Second Sword, Third Sword, Future Sight, and Time Stop. In comparison, the twelve bullets of Kurumi’s Chronos had many more capabilities than those Fang Zheng had mastered.

Of course, on the contrary, Fang Zheng’s time manipulation didn’t require hitting the enemy with bullets like Kurumi, but could be used directly, which is an advantage. After all, in the Main World, dodging bullets is considered a basic skill for the strong, and no matter how powerful Kurumi’s angel is, it’s useless if it doesn’t hit. From this aspect, Fang Zheng’s ability could be activated immediately as long as it’s within his control range, making it more practical.

It should be said that from this perspective, Kurumi’s Time Ability is more suited for support.

Fang Zheng, guided by his memory, walked to where the DJ zombie had been; sure enough, there was audio equipment used for playing music. Judging from the setup of this hall, it seemed that there was a dance or similar event planned before the outbreak of the Resident Evil. Unfortunately, it was clear that the event had been canceled.

”It should be right here...”

Perhaps the DJ zombie had left in too much of a hurry, or perhaps he had no consciousness at all; Fang Zheng quickly found a CD in a portable CD player placed nearby. However, he was a bit puzzled because it wasn’t the kind of CD sold commercially, but rather looked like a privately recorded CD. The cover had no name but was merely marked with messily written letters using a marker; it looked like some name... but Fang Zheng couldn’t make out the scribbles at all.

”Well, let’s listen to this music.”

For safety, Fang Zheng decided not to take the CD back to their base to play it. According to Rea, these songs seemed to contain a special frequency that only zombies could hear and the wavelength was very broad. If Fang Zheng played the song at their base and ended up attracting a large group of zombies there, that would be troublesome.

Such phenomena also exist in nature; for example, elephants or dolphins can emit sound waves beyond human hearing, communicating over long distances. Perhaps the songs on this CD worked on the same principle?

The portable CD player still had some battery left, so Fang Zheng unplugged the speaker and pressed the play button. Soon, a series of cheerful melodies came from the built-in speakers of the CD player.

”... What dreams do I yearn for? The stories hidden within me...”

To Fang Zheng, it just sounded like a typical pop song, yet Walnut shivered and excitedly nodded her head.

”That’s it... This melody... I remember it very clearly... It’s the one!”

”Yes, this is the song I heard... It feels as though it’s drawing me in somehow...”

Really?

Glancing at Rea and Walnut, Fang Zheng shrugged his shoulders and then looked at Little Hei.

”Little Hei, what about you?”

”Nope, I just think it’s a normal song, though it’s quite pleasant to listen to.”

”Then, how about you, Natsuse, Midori? What do you think?”

Fang Zheng then turned to others who were in contact via personal terminals, but everyone just shook their heads.

”Sounds good to me.”

”But I don’t feel anything particularly strange.”

”Me neither...”

Just then, through the screen, Fang Zheng saw Midori furrow her brows and exhibit a pensive expression; simultaneously, the pair of cat ears on her head also suddenly twitched.

”Brother Fang Zheng... I do have a strange feeling...”

”What’s wrong? Is there a problem with the tune?”

Hearing Midori’s response, Fang Zheng suddenly perked up, but Midori shook her head.

”No, it’s not the tune, it’s the vocals...”

”The vocals?”

”Yes.”

Midori nodded and then paused hesitantly for a moment before she cautiously said.

”I have a feeling that the voice singing... sounds very similar to Sister Rea and Sister Walnut’s voices.”

”Very... similar?”

Fang Zheng listened again but couldn’t hear any similarity between their voices, yet Midori quickly provided the answer.

”I’m not talking about the tone, I’m talking about the feeling... The singing voice gives me a feeling of lifelessness, similar to how Sister Walnut and Sister Rea speak...”

”I see...”

Hearing this, Fang Zheng finally understood what Midori meant. Rea and Walnut’s speech sounded no different from ordinary people to Fang Zheng, but clearly, it was different for Midori. It made sense; one was a zombie, the other a vampire—they were far from living, and it was normal for their speech to lack the vitality of the living.

So, the problem arose—why did the voice on this CD also give Midori the same feeling?

If this wasn’t just Midori’s misconception, then there might indeed be something wrong with this CD!

”Has anyone heard this song before?”

Fang Zheng and the others had arrived in this world after the disaster, and weren’t familiar with local trends, so their only option was to consult the locals.

However...

”I haven’t heard any songs like this, because my father doesn’t allow me to indulge in such...”

As the young lady, Rea was clearly not permitted to engage with these ”vulgar cultural products.”

”I was preparing for joint exams before this, I wasn’t focusing on any pop music...”

Busy with her exams, Walnut also had no answers, so it was all down to Kei Shidou.

”Hmm... I think I’ve heard this song somewhere...”

As expected, Kei Shidou on the other end finally gave Fang Zheng a passable answer.

”Are you sure?”

”Uh... I think it was some underground idol group... the name was... μ’s? No, that’s not right... Backstreet Girls... also not it, um... let me think again, it was something something... Stinky?”

”...?”

”Right!”

Saying this, Kei Shidou seemed to remember something, suddenly clapped his hands.

”It’s called Rotten Stinky!”
