Dimensional Codex System: I'm really not a cultist!

Chapter 761: Chapter 760: Rescue operation... failed?

After researching and analyzing the virus in this world, Fang Zheng couldn’t help but feel some concerns about the future direction of this world.

From what we can see so far, the most significant characteristic of this virus is that it evolves when it gets hurt...This in itself is not a problem; after all, this is how life has been operating for millions of years. But the issue is, this virus compresses the evolution process into an extremely short amount of time.

This poses a big problem.

It means that, in the days to come, Fang Zheng and his companions may encounter a greater number and higher intensity of biochemical creatures. To be honest, if these zombies were thrown into a nuclear reactor, Fang Zheng wouldn’t be surprised to see a few green giants emerge.

And this also means one thing.

That is, the rate at which humans in this world can eliminate zombies definitely can’t keep up with the evolution speed of the zombies themselves. Just like in the Resident Evil movies, after several years, most of the zombies people faced were still simple-minded creatures that knew nothing but to groan ”argh” and ”ugh.” But with the evolution speed of the virus in this world, let alone ten years, Fang Zheng fears zombies might be flying after ten months!

In ten years, they might even have superpowers!

Fang Zheng vaguely felt, maybe this world was the first one he could completely consume as ”firewood” since he obtained the Fire Seed.

But the time had not come yet.

Fang Zheng couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but just like when he was in the Fire Dragon World, if this world were to be compared to a dish, then the cooking process has just begun, and it hadn’t even started cooking yet. Fang Zheng felt that it would be too much of a pity to burn down this world right now, he needed to wait patiently a bit longer, wait until the dish was completely ready, and only then could he officially begin to enjoy it.

Before that...

”Dinglingling...!”

Just at this moment, Fang Zheng’s personal terminal suddenly rang, and then Tina appeared on the screen in front of Fang Zheng.

”Brother Fang Zheng, smoke has been spotted rising in the southeast direction of the city!”

”Oh?!”

Upon hearing this, Fang Zheng immediately perked up, stood up to store the samples, and then walked out of the room with big steps.

”Little Hei, let’s go, we’re leaving right now!”

”Snap!!”

A thick palm brutally hit the girl’s face, and the girl screamed, falling to the ground.

”What the hell are you doing, you stinking woman!”

A tall, thin man with dyed yellow hair glared viciously at the girl. Behind him, a middle-aged man in a suit and tie and a short, fat young man were sweating profusely as they doused the fire they had just started. This was the rooftop of a small building, and the only refuge they currently had.

”What are you trying to do? Set us all on fire and burn us to death?”

”I was just calling for help!”

The girl covered her aching cheek, not intimidated by the man’s wolf-like gaze.

”You heard the broadcast too! Yokohama North Station has set up a survivor base. If we call for help, they’ll come to save us! Since there’s such an opportunity, why shouldn’t we try it? The food reserves here are running low! And those who left here to look for food haven’t had the chance to return, we must figure something out!”

”It’s not your place to give orders here!”

Upon hearing this, the expression on the tall, thin man’s face became even more fierce.

”Don’t forget, this is Laozi’s house, it’s Laozi who took pity on you and let you in! You eat Laozi’s food, sleep in Laozi’s shelter, and now you want to leave just like that, it’s not so easy!”

”...What do you mean?”

Hearing the tall, thin man speak, the girl’s expression changed, she stood up, and slowly backed away. The man, however, cracked a smile.

”Isn’t it obvious, miss? You’ve been staying here for so long, you at least owe me some compensation, right?”

”Compensation? I have money...”

”What’s the use of money in this world now?!”

The tall, thin man flicked his hand with venom.

”Alright, no point in hiding it anymore, miss, just sleep with me for one night, how about that? It’s not a bad proposal, right!”

”You... you...”

Upon hearing this, the girl’s face turned pale, and she quickly turned her head, looking at the other two men. But seeing this scene, the man in the white shirt and the fat man just silently watched her, without uttering a word.

”Hehehe, don’t rush, you two will get your turn once I’m done! Dammit, it’s been so long since I’ve held a woman, Laozi’s gun is going to rust if I don’t use it soon! Now’s just the right time...”

”You, don’t come any closer!”

Facing the tall, thin man slowly approaching her, the girl’s face turned white with fear, but the man just sneered and lunged forward, grabbing her!

”Stop screaming, it’s useless! No one will come to save you!”

”Let go of me, let go!!!”

As the tall, thin man assaulted her, the girl struggled vigorously, grabbing his face, and with a scream, the man’s face suddenly bore several bloody scratches!

”You... you bitch!”

Feeling the scorching pain on his face, the tall and thin man also roared in anger; then he raised his hand again, and slapped the young girl’s face viciously!

”Ah!!”

Accompanied by a scream, the girl’s figure wobbled and she fell backward, but no one noticed that she was already by the edge of the rooftop staircase. In the next moment, she lost her balance and stepped into the empty space before the eyes of everyone, plummeting straight down. And then...

”Thud!!”

Hearing the sound of a heavy object hitting the ground, the three men were startled. They hurried to the stairwell to look down and then they couldn’t help but inhale sharply.

Lying on the platform below was the girl, with her eyes wide open and void of any sign of life. Her neck was twisted at an unnatural angle, as if it had been brutally snapped, and blood was slowly oozing from the back of her head, spreading out on the ground.

”Hey... is this for real?”

Seeing this scene, the three men were shocked, then the tall and thin man hesitantly stepped forward, reaching out to put his hand in front of the girl’s nose, only to retract it as if he had touched an electric fence.

”Dead, is she dead?!”

”Is she truly dead?”

Hearing this response, the other two men looked at each other, then the fat man suddenly shuddered.

”What, what do we do, there’s a dead person!”

”Shut up! What’s there to be afraid of with a dead person? Haven’t enough people died these days?!”

The tall and thin man glared fiercely at the fat man, then turned his head back and started to scrutinize the dead girl’s body meticulously, with his eyes ablaze as he stared at her pale skin.

”Good that she’s dead, she can’t resist now!”

”Wait, wait a minute, you... don’t tell me...”

”Quit your blabbering! She’s still warm, and she looks just like she’s sleeping. Don’t you want to take this chance? Or do you think those zombies outside are better?”

The tall and thin man quickly made up his mind, then waved his hand.

”Quick, carry her inside. We’ll have a good time enjoying ourselves, and after we’re done, we can eat her! Perfect timing, since we’re short on food—a person less means more reserves for us!”

Hearing the tall and thin man’s words, the fat man and the middle-aged man exchanged looks. Eventually, they swallowed hard and walked forward to move the girl’s corpse, but at that moment, a voice suddenly rang out behind them.

”Excuse me, gentlemen... what are you doing?”

”Hm?”

Hearing this sudden voice, all three men were momentarily stunned. Then they quickly turned around, only to see a young man and a little girl standing behind them, watching them.

Who are these people? Where did they come from? Never mind, who cares!

Seeing the two people before them, the tall and thin man’s anger surged from his heart, and wicked thoughts sprang to mind. He was already feeling quite unstable about the situation; these sudden ”witnesses” obviously had to be dealt with... right, the little girl could be kept! Perfectly, after he was done playing with this woman, he could play with that little girl!

”We, we just had a little accident here, my companion accidentally fell down...”

Thinking this, the tall and thin man smiled as he spoke. At the same time, he gave the other two men a signal with his eyes, and the two men nodded silently, then moved left and right toward the young man in front of them.

”Yes, indeed, we are quite troubled here, could you perhaps come and help... go to hell!!”

Walking up to the young man, the middle-aged man suddenly pulled out a hammer from behind and swung it towards the young man’s head. On the other side, the fat man drooled and lunged at the little girl standing next to the young man.

”Swoosh!”

But before the middle-aged man could bring down the hammer, his head and upper body, along with his right hand clutching the hammer, instantly split apart-like segments of a cut sausage, falling to the ground. On the other side, with a howl of agony, the fat man who pounced on the little girl was sent flying back, crashing into the nearby wall with such force that his head smashed into the bricks, and he moved no more.

”Who, who are you?!”

Witnessing this, the tall and thin man’s face went pale, and he quickly picked up the handgun at his waist, aiming at the young man—this gun was one he had obtained from a dead policeman before, and it was the foundation and barrier of his dominance over this small group.

”Die!”

As he yelled, the tall and thin man pulled the trigger.

However, at the same time, a cold light pierced the barrel of the gun, then went straight through the tall and thin man’s body, pinning him against the wall.

”Sigh...”

Fang Zheng brushed off his hands, then slowly walked up to the girl’s corpse, looking down at her with eyes wide open, dying with her gaze fixed.

”Big brother...”

”No need to say anything, Little Hei.”

Fang Zheng helplessly pressed his hand to his forehead and heaved a sigh.

”It seems that this time, our rescue attempt has failed.”
