Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 506: Chapter 305: The Second of the Three Little Bears, Nils

After Oriana was taken down from the tree that day, Grace told Hill that if this mischievous character climbed the tree again, Hill could send her back to her room after dinner.

Hill blinked, ”After dinner?” He swallowed back the words already on the tip of his tongue. Was it okay to not let Oriana have dinner?

”She must develop the habit of eating at regular times. From now on, there will be three fixed meals, plus two fruit times every day.

If she wants more food, she must grow up and hunt outside herself!

Bears that are only being raised have no right to enjoy!

Once Ula has finished giving birth and returns to the forest, the puppet won’t cook every day.

This is to ensure that the pregnant mother bear has enough energy to give birth.

To give us enough nutrition to give birth to healthy children, we all went hunting at the edge of the wilderness for a few days!

The remaining food is enough for Ula to eat for another month.” Grace said nonchalantly, ”The food Aurelio brought back is relatively pure, not as hard to digest as the creatures in the wilderness. We mostly saved it for the little bear.

The food I hunted recently is for her to eat a year from now. Sharlene is the same. She will prepare one year’s worth of food for Nils.”

Grace glanced at Hill, who wanted to speak, ”I know you have fruit trees there, but you don’t understand yet how much an Earth Bear in development can eat!

Your fruits, plus Aurelio’s stock, will barely last a year.

Moreover, a year from now, no matter how they resist, they must eat the food of the wild. They can only use your fruits to satisfy their cravings. This is the survival way of the wilderness; don’t spoil the cubs excessively.”

Hill silently lowered his head, swallowing back his plan to collect food in a year. After all, he didn’t need to hunt himself. He could directly purchase it.

Grace glanced at Ula, who was lying on the ground, bored and scratching the air with her four paws, ”I will leave after Ula gives birth. Sharlene will stay another week, Ula another month.

You must hold on, absolutely don’t soften your heart and do everything for them.

Otherwise, you might not hold on until we return to rest, the bear cubs of the Earth Bear are proficient in eating, drinking, playing, acting spoiled, and causing trouble. Don’t be fooled.”

Hill obediently agreed. He felt that Grace wasn’t too worried about the future life of the three little bears. Instead, she was more concerned that Hill would be bullied by these bear cubs.

Hill helplessly smiled, since the Earth Bear had their own set of child-rearing principles, Hill could only follow them.

Moreover, he had better establish enough prestige with the three bear cubs before Ula also leaves, or else these bear mothers might never be at ease.

Grace gently lifted Hill and held him in her arms, speaking in a soft tone, ”Hill is a good boy and also a good brother. But when dealing with the little bear, don’t be too gentle, definitely refuse their unreasonable demands.”

Oriana, who was playing with the battlefield heather, saw her mother holding Hill and immediately rolled and crawled over, tightly hugging her mother’s leg and howling plaintively.

Grace sneered and swiftly put Hill down, grabbed Oriana, and started slapping her.

Her momentum was too overwhelming, and Hill couldn’t help but take a few steps back.

This mother and daughter both knew why Oriana was being spanked, but the little one didn’t give in, crying out and accusing her mother of holding another child, while the older one spanked directly. Oriana didn’t have the qualifications to manage her mother.

Hill couldn’t get a word in edgewise. Even if he wanted to step forward and say a few good things for Oriana, there was no chance.

Now it had nothing to do with him, it was completely a struggle for the right to speak between the mother and the daughter.

Hill helplessly turned and left. He figured that since fruits needed to be given at fixed times, he couldn’t casually feed the little bear.

Hill wondered if he could resist the little bears’ begging. So, it was best not to let them know he had any food.

He directly walked toward the main house, intending to hand over the fruits that had already ripened.

Passing by Sharlene’s house, Hill heard the mother bear roaring, ”Nils! Don’t laze around in the house, go out and play! You will sleep yourself into a dead bear!”

Probably after Ula gives birth, Sharlene would start hunting again.

But Nils, he was just the epitome of a lazy bear.

Completely the opposite of Oriana.

That little female bear only appeared at her house during meal times, while this little male bear would find a spot to lie down even if his own mother threw him out of the house.

However, there was Oriana in the camp.

The Oriana, who almost played the battlefield heather to pieces, would definitely not watch Nils immerse himself in his dreams. She would kick him up even if it meant kicking him awake.

Hill quickened his steps. He certainly didn’t want to be caught by Sharlene to discuss why her lively child was so lazy.

When Hill came out of the main house, feeling light, he found that Sharlene had gone mad.

She had taken Nils directly up a tall cedar tree at the camp entrance.

Even though the Earth Bear could manipulate gravity, reducing much of their weight, the cedar was still bent under Sharlene’s weight.

”Sharlene! Come down!” Grace angrily shouted, ”Do you think you’re just coming of age?”

Satisfied after hanging Nils on a branch, Sharlene turned and jumped down from the tree, ”It’s fine. I know what I’m doing. He won’t fall.”

”Who cares if you fall, these trees are the clan leader’s treasures.” Grace said irritably. ”If you break them, you explain it to him.”

”Oh.” Sharlene lowered her head, ”I’m just so exasperated with Nils, why is he so lazy? I’m so lively!”

”You’re asking me?” Grace said in an odd tone, ”You should ask Valery instead.”

Sharlene was stunned; only now did she realize that her bear cub didn’t resemble her, but might resemble his dad.

”Valery is very diligent, works hard too!” Sharlene said in a drifting tone.

”That’s because he was already mature by the time you were born.” Grace mocked, ”When he was young, he was just like Nils! To become what he is today, his parents must have beaten him countless times!”

Sharlene wilted instantly, ”So what do I do? I can’t stay here and spank him all the time.”

”Not your problem.” Grace said lazily, ”Let Valery come back and spank him now and then. Once Nils understands the cost of laziness, he will behave.”

Sharlene thoughtfully sat on the ground, clapped her front paws together a few times, ”Right, why should I bother? Let Valery come back and spank him. If his son is lazy, he should put in the effort.”

Hill quietly hid himself. At times like these, he could still sense that the atmosphere ahead was not suitable for males to get involved.

Though Sharlene spoke lightly, at least for now, Nils was still her responsibility.

Compared to Grace, who faced Oriana’s constant challenges for family dominance, Hill felt Sharlene was worse off.

After all, Grace only needed to start beating, making sure that the young bear who wanted to become the head of the household at such a young age understood that her mother was invincible.

But Sharlene, discovering Nils had slept on a tree branch all day, was utterly devastated.

Every morning, she kicked Nils out the door, forbidding him from eating breakfast unless he ran three laps around the camp.

It was the same at noon. If he didn’t have enough activity in the morning, he couldn’t have lunch.

Fortunately, laziness and greediness often go hand in hand. For food, Nils moved a bit.

Watching the chaos in the camp every day, Ula got a bit anxious.

While she walked around the camp every day, Hill could hear her muttering.

Ula was torn between wanting a daughter like Oriana or a lazy son like Nils. She thought both were pretty terrifying, so she got stuck in a conundrum.

Hill eventually couldn’t resist asking Ula when she passed by his little house, ”Why don’t you think about having a child different from both of them?”

Ula suddenly realized, and then every day as she lay on the lawn hugging her belly, she kept discussing with the child still inside: As long as you aren’t like those two, mommy will love you any way you are.

Even though Grace and Sharlene heard Ula’s words, they gave up being annoyed after a short while.

They both wanted to stuff their own bear cubs back into their bellies. Fortunately, Earth Bears didn’t have the tradition of raising cubs. Otherwise, if like humans, they had to raise little bears until they were sixteen, they might desperately jump into the chasm at the end of the world.

During this time, Hill had already figured out how to communicate with Oriana.

This little bear, though a bit domineering, was much easier to communicate with than Nils.

Since Hill couldn’t disrupt Grace’s feeding plans, he had to come up with other ideas.

In the end, he set up a large metal slide mixed with mithril beside the main house. Hill’s biggest ring could barely fit this slide; he himself found it difficult to move.

Oriana was quickly attracted to this strange construction. Hill slid down a few times in front of her.

Then, without hesitation, he put the slide away.

Oriana, though a bit envious, held out for a day. She was very smart, knowing that although Hill looked different, he was also her brother.

If she went to Hill for the slide, she would never be able to completely ignore this brother again.

Earth Bears had inherited memories. Though the later stages hadn’t fully unlocked yet, the current level was enough for Oriana to understand Hill’s intention.

But she was really bored with the camp’s stuff.

Battlefield Heather would play with her but only for a short while. Once she lost control of her strength, the plants would swiftly burrow into the ground and never come out again.

Oriana wandered around Hill’s house for a few circles, hesitating for a long time.

But finally, she obediently stood in front of Hill’s door and, with as light movements as possible, knocked on the door.
