”I don’t know, I really don’t know. I slept through the night and woke up to find it like this. I have no idea how he died.”

”I was sleeping all night, and when I woke up this morning, it was like this. I really don’t know what happened.”

The two suspects had been questioned dozens of times, but their answers remained the same.

Wu Weiguo watched the two people silently, his voice heavy, ”It seems they really don’t know what happened!”

Sitting next to Wu Weiguo, Fan Jianming immediately turned to Director Huang, ”Were just the two of them locked in a room with Ye Qing last night?”

Director Huang, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead, said, ”Only the two of them, my guards can testify to that.”

”Then what’s going on?” Fan Jianming turned his head to look at Wu Weiguo.

Wu Weiguo furrowed his brows. The matter was obvious—if there was no issue with the suspects inside, then the guards must be the problem. It was such a simple logic; Fan Jianming was not baffled by it; he simply didn’t want to get involved. The detention center was under Fan Jianming’s jurisdiction. If the issue blew up and police officers were involved, it would have a bad impact on him.

Fan Jianming now just wanted to shift the responsibility elsewhere.

Just then, the office door was suddenly pushed open, and a police officer rushed in, ”It’s bad! Ye Qing’s body has been sent to the crematory, and it’s probably being incinerated right now!”

”What!” Lin Huayu exclaimed, standing up abruptly.

Mu Qingrong’s vision went black, and she fainted to the ground. Even as strong as she was, she couldn’t hold up at this moment.

”Ms. Mu, Ms. Mu,” Lin Huayu said as she helped Mu Qingrong up, indignantly, ”How could they burn the body so quickly? What exactly is going on? Did you do something shameful and want to destroy the evidence?”

Fan Jianming ignored Lin Huayu, anxiously asking, ”Is there an autopsy result or a report?”

The police officer said, ”Yes, the autopsy results indicate that he suffered an outbreak of viral chickenpox, a type of acute contagious disease!”

Fan Jianming was immediately relieved. With this autopsy result, he could also explain to his superiors. Even if Lin Zhen Nan personally pursued the matter, with the body already cremated, the autopsy result was the only evidence, and no one could say anything.

At most, they would investigate the few guards for negligence and the pathology department for unlawfully incinerating the body, which wouldn’t implicate Fan Jianming.

Lin Huayu said angrily, ”I don’t believe it! Ye Qing was in his prime, a former soldier. Where would he get viral chickenpox? You’re in such a hurry to burn the body; are you guilty of something?”

Fan Jianming turned his head to look at Lin Huayu and sternly said, ”Miss Lin, this is a police station; please be more respectful. Insulting police officers is not a minor charge.”

Lin Huayu was not afraid of Fan Jianming and loudly said, ”I have not insulted you; I am stating the facts!”

Fan Jianming glanced at Wu Weiguo, signaling him to handle Lin Huayu.

Wu Weiguo gave him a look and said, ”Director Fan, I advise you. It’s better to make clear who is responsible for what. Trying to evade responsibility blindly might just land you in bigger trouble!”

Fan Jianming furrowed his brow and said in a deep voice, ”Manager Wu, are you trying to scare me?”

”I certainly wouldn’t dare scare you; I’m merely reminding you,” Wu Weiguo replied offhandedly. He couldn’t be too aggressive with Fan Jianming. Behind Fan Jianming was a powerful family, and it was normal not to be influenced by the Lin family. However, his open threat to Lin Huayu irritated Wu Weiguo, which was why he said what he did.

Fan Jianming actually did not dare confront the Lin family head-on, but with things having escalated to this point, showing weakness would mean losing face completely. Fan Jianming gritted his teeth and said, ”Manager Wu, before the matter is cleared up, I hope you watch your words. This is a police department, not your Lin Corporation; you have to be responsible for what you say!”

”The same goes for both of us,” Wu Weiguo said. ”Actually, even at Lin Corporation, I, Wu Weiguo, would be responsible for the words I utter.”

Fan Jianming ignored the sarcasm in Wu Weiguo’s words and said, ”In that case, Manager Wu, you can go back first. Once there’s a result, I’ll notify you!”

”I’m not leaving!” Lin Huayu said defiantly. ”If this matter isn’t cleared up today, I’m not going anywhere. I’m telling you, whoever hurt Ye Qing, I will not let them go; I have to avenge Ye Qing!”

Fan Jianming frowned and said, ”This is the police station, Miss Lin. Please watch your words!”

”So what if I’m not careful!” Lin Huayu retorted vehemently, her temper as a missy fully revealed.

Fan Jianming’s expression turned ice-cold, feeling utterly humiliated by being spoken to like this by a young girl.

With a heavy voice, Fan Jianming said, ”If Miss Lin continues to speak this way, then I will have no choice but to pursue charges against you for insulting a police officer!”

”Hey, I just don’t accept that, I’ll speak however I want. What are you going to do about it, pursue my responsibility?” Lin Huayu waved her little fist indignantly, ”I suspect you cops have done something underhanded, and Ye Qing’s incident definitely can’t be unrelated to you!”

Fan Jianming, enraged, waved his hand and ordered, ”Take her away!”

Several police officers stepped forward, and Wu Weiguo took a step in front of Lin Huayu.

”What’s this? Resisting arrest?” Fan Jianming glared and said, ”Manager Wu, you are a smart man, you wouldn’t want to get involved because of this, would you?”

”Weiguo!” Just then, a deep voice suddenly came from the doorway.

Everyone turned to look. They saw Lin Zhen Nan walking in, accompanied by several individuals. Fan Jianming recognized all of them. Each was a figure he wouldn’t dare to cross in his wildest dreams. The person standing farthest from Lin Zhen Nan was the second-in-command deputy director of the Shenchuan City Police Department, wielding power much greater than his own.

As for the other few, they were bigshots often seen only on television; any of them could crush him with ease.

”Dad!” Lin Huayu ran over and threw herself into Lin Zhen Nan’s arms, sobbing, ”They... they killed Brother Ye...”

Lin Zhen Nan gently patted Lin Huayu’s shoulder, walked into the office, and quietly regarded Fan Jianming, ”Director Fan is following procedure; punishing my daughter according to the public security regulations is right. But since she is still a student, could I trouble Director Fan to make an exception? A fine would suffice, no need for detention. After all, she still has classes to attend.”

In fact, the words Lin Huayu had said wouldn’t even warrant a fine. Lin Zhen Nan, starting off by reproaching his daughter, startled Fan Jianming. He knew full well how much this man doted on his only daughter. Since he had started by criticizing Lin Huayu, what would he do to him next?

”Mr. Lin is joking, I was just trying to scare Miss Lin a bit, just a joke, no harm done,” Fan Jianming said with a forced smile.

”That’s good to hear,” Lin Zhen Nan nodded. ”Since there is no issue with my daughter, let’s talk about something more serious.”

Fan Jianming’s heart skipped a beat, and with a trembling voice, he said, ”What... what serious matter?”

Lin Zhen Nan, with a serious tone, said, ”Director Fan, I’ve just received news from the bank that since last night till now, all five custodial workers received several large deposits. Moreover, these deposits all came from the same account. I would like to ask if you know anything about this, Director Fan?”

Fan Jianming’s face drastically changed, and after glancing at the other leaders, he whispered, ”I... I don’t know about this, perhaps it’s just a friend transferring money...”

”Which friend would transfer tens to hundreds of millions at once? And all five people received large sums from the same person with transactions almost simultaneously. Is there any issue here?” Lin Zhen Nan paused, then added, ”Moreover, I found that these five people were precisely the workers on duty here last night!”

Fan Jianming was extremely frustrated. He thought that by obtaining the autopsy report, he would be able to distance himself from the incident. Yet, Lin Zhen Nan had been a step ahead of him, swiftly investigating the accounts of the custodial staff, and had pinpointed those five individuals.

”I was unaware of this matter, but I will certainly investigate it thoroughly!” Fan Jianming said somberly. This time, he couldn’t evade responsibility, but he had to try to minimize his own as much as possible.

”It’s normal for you to be unaware of this, but there’s another matter that I believe you should be very clear about.” Lin Zhen Nan looked at Fan Jianming and continued, ”I also found out from the bank that since February of this year, your five accounts received a total of seven unexplained large transfers, amounting to over five million.

You should be clear about that, shouldn’t you, Director Fan?”

Fan Jianming was dumbstruck, staring at Lin Zhen Nan in amazement. He hadn’t expected Lin Zhen Nan to check his accounts so quickly, nor had he anticipated being confronted so publicly and directly like this.

While Lin Zhen Nan was a dominant figure in Shenchuan City, Fan Jianming was still a sitting deputy director of the Shenchuan City Police Department, and his position was notable. If there hadn’t been a conflict of interest between Fan Jianming and Lin Zhen Nan, the latter would not have treated him this way.

Moreover, someone like Lin Zhen Nan, known for his aggressive business tactics and wolf-like demeanor, would not make his move unless he was certain he could completely take down his target without dragging it out. Now that Lin Zhen Nan had exposed Fan Jianming’s affairs, it was clear to Fan Jianming that he was likely finished.

Fan Jianming couldn’t understand why Lin Zhen Nan would go after him this way. Weakening a person like Fan Jianming wasn’t difficult, but behind him was the Fan family. Could it be that Lin Zhen Nan intended to become enemies with the entire Fan family?

Among those present, only Wu Weiguo knew exactly why Lin Zhen Nan was taking such a strong stance against Fan Jianming. He wanted to make it known to everyone: anyone who dared to bully his daughter Lin Huayu would meet this very fate!
