My Alleged Husband

Chapter 1734: Chapter 1528: Powerless

Right now, I truly lack the strength to care about so much. Is it really so difficult for me to have one peaceful night’s sleep? I just wish that when I wake up, he would already be by my side.

A week has passed in the blink of an eye, and Zhang Yichen still shows no signs of waking up. Xia Tian and Zhang Zhentian are anxious; they fear their son will just remain asleep forever and never wake up again. They wish all the things they did in the past were not true. If they had done fewer things to hurt their son, would these events not have transpired? Would their son not be lying here now? If they had consented to him being with Ran Zhihan from the start, perhaps she wouldn’t have left him. Is everything truly their fault?

Even Xia Jing cannot understand why all this has happened. In her eyes, she only hopes for her son’s happiness and has never intended for her precious son to face any harm.

Zhang Zhentian, seeing his son lying on the hospital bed, his face pale without a trace of color, feels his heart being torn apart. But what can he do? Everything that has led to this outcome, he and his beloved wife have created step by step. Who else can they blame? If he had been more understanding of his son, would things have turned out differently? Seeing his son lying there unable to move makes him wish he could endure this pain on behalf of his beloved son. He knows how important pride is to his son, but now, lying there immobile, where does his pride come from?

Old Master Zhang feels the same. Seeing Zhang Yichen lying on the bed like a zombie makes him feel terrible. After all, this is the grandson he painstakingly raised and cherished for so many years, never willing to let him suffer even a bit, never willing to scold or hit him, never willing to let him end up like this. But today, he has become this way, all thanks to his son and daughter-in-law.

”Now you two must be satisfied, right? Your own son, due to both of you, lies on a hospital bed. You must think his lying there has everything to do with his beloved woman, because you heard the doctor say he was extremely emotionally traumatized, leading to this. But did you ever consider maybe him ending up like this also has something to do with both of you as parents? If you two hadn’t divorced so impulsively, ignoring advice, would he be under such immense pressure? If not for you, and the problems with his beloved person, would he have driven in a fit of emotion and gone abroad to the United States for business? Without this, would the accident happen, leaving him here, possibly never able to stand again? You never reflect on your part, always shifting blame to others. Do you really lack the courage to face the consequences of what you caused? Ever since you returned home, you’ve been constantly hurting him. Well, now it’s done. He will never wake up again due to your harm. Are you satisfied now? You can leave happily now, back to where you were. From today onwards, I want you two to clearly remember that your son’s state today has something to do with both of you. Don’t push all the blame onto others. Nobody is born to bear the brunt of your mistakes. They’re not your scapegoats. Mistakes that you commit, learn to take responsibility for them. If you can’t even face up to your own errors, then what have you lived for all these years?”

Xia Jing and Zhang Zhentian heard Old Master Zhang say these words to them, prompting them to internally question themselves: Is it really unrelated to us? Is everything truly because his beloved woman stimulated him, causing this state? If it’s unrelated, then why is our son lying here, unwilling to wake up? How much emotional blow did he suffer? If it truly relates to us, then how do we face our son? Everything is due to us, causing our child such harm. If so, how will we ever forgive ourselves and live on, with our son in this state?

Ran Zhihan never thought that at this point, Old Master Zhang would still stand up for her. Everything implicates her too, and she should stay to care for the man she loves, perhaps her love can call him back to consciousness.

”Grandpa, it’s not their fault. It’s all on me. Had I not provoked him, maybe he wouldn’t have driven emotionally, wouldn’t have teetered off the cliff. Grandpa, I want to stay and care for him till he wakes up, till the day he can stand on his own, to let him know my heart has been with him all along. I just didn’t know how to express my love.”

”There’s no other choice now. Maybe if he hears your every word, he can wake up. Maybe your words carry the most weight for him, are promises he holds onto. Child, I hope you care for him well. Bring him back. He’s the Zhang Family’s only hope. I’m old, can’t bear to see him---or myself---endure this life on a bed indefinitely. I believe you won’t let me live out my years in solitude, won’t let him lie there forever...”

”Don’t worry, I’ll care for him wholeheartedly, bring him back to health, see him stand before everyone, and have him apologize for causing such concern...”

Old Master Zhang nodded heavily, then left the ward. Xia Jing and Zhang Zhentian followed suit, heading abroad to find the best doctors to save their son. They cannot let their son be ruined this way, to remain on a hospital bed, never waking to see the beautiful world again.

Ran Zhihan saw the elders leave, turned and knelt by the bedside. Her long, slender fingers caressed the face of her beloved man inch by inch. His face already felt devoid of warmth, akin to a living corpse!

I’ve never forgotten the look in his eyes at that time. I know how much he wants to live joyfully and remember his suffering when I was sick.

For the first time, I feel completely powerless.
