My Alleged Husband

Chapter 748: Chapter 718 Around the World_1

Xia Jing just wanted to tell her husband that she longed to travel the world with him because such precious times were truly rare.

She had already missed too many golden opportunities in the past, always focussing on how to complete tasks for her organization.

But she forgot that she was a woman too, one who also needed to experience the life that so many other women longed for. Why was she always so headstrong, inconsiderate? Why did she keep dragging others down with her, causing them pain?

Watching Zhang Zhentian flee in panic, Xia Jing couldn’t help but reflect on herself.

How much hurt must she have caused her husband for him to fear her so, to run away without even leaving room for dialogue?

Looking at how her husband reacted to her, her heart ached, but some issues were now beyond her ability to resolve. She had made her choices step by step, and since she chose this path, then why should she repeatedly question herself? If she gave up on the path she once chose, wouldn’t she be admitting defeat, no different from those who give up halfway?

Just as Zhang Yichen happened to pass by the door, he saw his father running away from the bedroom. Unclear about what had happened, his first reaction was that his mother must have bullied his father again, leaving his father at a loss and quietly walking away.

Yet this time was not what he imagined. His father was too timid to stand before his mother and hear her out. If he had, he might have been thrilled, might have embraced his wife warmly, but instead, he escaped.

”Dad, what happened to you? How come I saw you running frantically out of the bedroom? Did something happen? Did Mom say something to you again? Or did she drive you out again?”

”I don’t know what you really think of Mom, but no matter what, you shouldn’t indulge her like this. She’s been hurting you over and over—why can’t you stand up to her as a man should?”

”If Mom really drove you out, don’t worry, I will stand up for you. I refuse to believe it—she can call on you and dismiss you at will. What has she turned you into? Aren’t you a man? Can’t you show a bit of basic male dignity?”

”You shut up! No matter what, she’s your mother. You have no right to talk about her, no right to accuse her!

She went through hardship to bring you into this world. Why must you keep blaming her? Today, I ran away because I was afraid of her rejection. It was my lack of responsibility as a man. Why should you blame your mother, saying she drove me out? Your interference in our affairs only embarrasses me further.”

Zhang Yichen was stunned. He hadn’t expected that this time it had been his father’s fault. He hadn’t imagined that his father’s escape was the cause of all this, and once again, he had misunderstood his mother.

Xiao Jing heard her son’s assessment of her from the bedroom, and her heart sank in disappointment. She hadn’t expected to have given her son such an impression of her, to always feel she was at fault, to second-guess herself repeatedly.

She hadn’t anticipated failing so terribly as a mother, unable to provide even the bare minimum for her son, unable to earn his trust. She felt like the most incapable mother in the world.

”Son, I really just wanted to take your mother around the world. In the past years, although we’ve been drifting, constantly on the move, you think we’re having fun, but who can understand the unease we feel outside!

I want to take her to see the limitless beauty of nature, to let her experience the most wonderful things in the world. I don’t want her to work so hard; I want her to live a life no other woman has.

I never had the chance or the means to take her traveling before, but now that things have come to this point, I want to do everything I ever wanted for her. Otherwise, what would I do if she really left me one day? I could only watch her laugh in someone else’s arms, while I can do nothing but watch quietly from afar. Do you know how desperate that feels?”

Upon hearing Zhang Zhentian’s words, Xia Jing couldn’t hold back her tears. She had never considered that her husband’s sudden desire to travel the world was driven by fear that she might leave him someday, and that then he would have lost the chance to share with her the most beautiful things in the world. He just wanted to leave her with the sweetest memories.

”Dad, so you mean you’re afraid Mom might leave you one day and traveling the world with her is just to keep the best memories with you forever? You want to live the rest of your life holding onto those memories, right?

Have you never thought about whether this is truly worth it?”

”Inside, Mom does care about you. After all you’ve done for her, she feels more gratitude towards you. But there are some things that can’t simply be forgotten, so...”

”I know that now I may not understand anymore. Before, I could wait indefinitely without caring, but now I can’t wait any longer. I truly fear that she might leave me one day. Now, I just want to permanently etch the best memories of us into my brain. Even if she leaves me, I will still have those sweetest memories. They would be the most precious treasure of my life...”
