My Alleged Husband

Chapter 746: Chapter 716: Letting Go of the Past_1

”Zhentian, deep down you know some things just can’t be forgotten at the mention of it, like what I did to you today, the words I said to you. Do you think you can dismiss all these as inconsequential? Does your heart not struggle with this at all? Does it not hurt at all?”

”I believe your heart hurts too because as a man, you should have your dignity. You wouldn’t want any man longing for your wife, nor would you want her to harbor feelings for another man who isn’t you. This is a tremendous insult to you.”

”Over the years, I’ve seen your sincerity towards me, yet I’ve always chosen to avoid it, to turn a blind eye to your heartfelt efforts. Every harsh but true word you said, I acted as though I was deaf. I know this is truly unfair to you, but there are things I can’t help. My only way to confront and tell you is this, because maybe then you might gradually let me go.”

”I once read a book called ’Letting Go Is Also a Kind of Beauty.’ Letting go is a form of fulfillment. Do you know how surprised I was when I saw this book? I wondered why others could let go so perfectly, turn around so gracefully, even if their face was streaked with tears at that instant; yet, why couldn’t I?”

”If back when you were pursuing me, I had firmly turned away, would we be spared from today’s tragedy? Would you not have been hurt so deeply by me? All these mistakes are my own, but in the end, you had to bear this pain with me. For that, I am truly sorry.”

”Some things truly cannot be let go of. You can’t give up on the past, and you can’t forget what I’ve said to you. Since that’s the case, why must we forcibly cling to each other, both filled with guilt and unease? Is this the life we want? We’re just pushing each other towards a dead end until there’s no way out and only then realizing what’s been done wrong, what choices have led to which consequences, and whether our lives have turned out as we wished!”

Zhentian knew all too well what his wife meant by these words. She simply wanted him to let go, to allow her to leave him. But for him, wasn’t that the hardest thing in the world?

”Maybe what you’re saying is right, but for me, it’s impossible to grant you this. Perhaps my heart isn’t big enough, but do you know? Every time I think about letting go, the woman I’ve cherished and doted on for decades will no longer be mine; my heart aches like it’s being carved with a knife. I can’t bear that pain, nor do I wish for you to endure similar agony. I just want us to live in peace together. Is that really so hard? Is it not okay to give ourselves a way out?”

”You think I can’t let go of your past, but today I want to make it crystal clear to you: if you’re willing to try to give me a chance, to try and love me, to try and stay by my side!”

”Then, I’m willing to give up all of my past for you. I can pretend that none of it ever happened, and I’ll continue to love you as before, stay by your side, never leave you, until we reach the vast expanse of the universe together.”

”You might not believe what I’m saying right now, but do you know? Every word I say to you comes from the bottom of my heart. I’ve never thought to deceive you. Even though you’ve told me so many lies, I still believe in you in my heart, and I’m still willing to make choices for you that everyone else sees as unwise, simply because I want you to stay by my side. I’ve gone to such lengths; I trust that you won’t be as heartless as before, knowing you have feelings for me yet pushing me away thousands of miles...”

When Zhang Yichen heard what his father said, he felt conflicted. His own heart trembled along with it. If even his father could let go of past prejudices for the sake of his mother, his love, then why couldn’t he? The woman he had tirelessly searched for over 10 years, that kind of affection can’t just be cut off abruptly. Couldn’t he make sacrifices for her? Should he really be so stubborn and ruin all the significant things in his life over trifles?

Perhaps only by truly letting go of the past can the best future for one another be chosen. Perhaps only this way can everyone understand what they want out of life and make choices that will benefit or burden them for a lifetime.

Ran Zhihan pondered deeply, not understanding why her parents could come this far while her husband was unwilling to let go of past prejudices.

If only her husband could do the same, how wonderful life would be, how happy her entire life could turn out—no one knows.

”Zhentian, some things can’t just be let go as said. You should understand that even if you swear here that you can let go of everything, can you truly get over that hurdle in your heart?

I don’t want you to force yourself to do anything. I just want you to act according to your heart, to live happily. I don’t care how much pain I bear; I just want you to be joyful. I’ve failed you too much in the past, never having considered changing for you. Now I just want to make an effort for you!”

”I also hope you won’t keep pouring all your feelings into me as foolishly as before. In the end, you’ll find it very exhausting, and my departure would strike you as the greatest blow. That’s not the ending I want to see. I want you to face me with a bright smile.”

”But the words you spoke today have truly moved me. Perhaps one day, I will fall deeply in love with you, and when that day comes, I’ll be completely ensnared for life. If that day does arrive, I hope you can indeed let go of everything as you said today and join me in life wholeheartedly!”
