My Alleged Husband

Chapter 320: Chapter 300 Slumber_1

”I’ve already made it very clear to your family members,” the doctor began, ”everyone’s choices are different. If your son chooses to sleep for the rest of his life, to lie on this hospital bed unable to move, then no one can wake him up—unless he himself wants to wake up and see every person in this world who cares about him. Of course, you mentioned that his fingers moved just now, which indeed does not rule out the possibility of him waking up. However, the chances are extremely slim. Honestly, it’s very rare for someone who has slept for so long to naturally come to consciousness. There are few precedents for this, and typically in clinical practice, if such a person does not fully awaken within the predetermined time frame, they would lose their medical license and would have to retake the professional exam. But Mr. Zhang’s case is different; he doesn’t need any professional certification, nor does he need to take any professional exam. So, his choice is without any difficulty. He can choose to remain in his eternal slumber or decide when he wants to awake, everything is entirely governed by his inner thoughts. If he truly wishes to wake up, then he will definitely do so. If he is afraid of awakening, of facing the cruel and heartbreaking things, then he will seal off his heart. He will choose never to wake up because dreams are never painful, unlike the suffering brought by reality. Everyone understands this principle, and I believe you, as his family, do too...”

”You two shouldn’t make it hard for the doctor,” Old Master Zhang addressed Zhentian and Xia Jing. ”The doctor has already made it very clear. Whether your son can wake up is now up to fate. If he recovers well, who knows, we might even be able to be discharged from the hospital. However, if his recovery falls short, then he may never leave the hospital again. Up until now, you’ve both been through so many trials and tribulations, I don’t know what you two have decided. Are you choosing to love what you do, or merely to complete a task?”

”Right now I don’t want to explain anything,” Xia Jing said as she grabbed Zhang Yichen’s hand. ”I just hope it will bless my son to safely get through this critical period. Today is the second day already. If he doesn’t wake up today, then he might spend his entire life lying on this bed unable to move. Could my son really be ruined here for life?” Xia Jing continued, ”Son, please wake up soon. Do you know how worried your father and I are about you? You went out alone, and for so long you didn’t call us back. Do you know we’ve been looking everywhere for you? I was wrong before, I shouldn’t have done so many things to hurt you. I shouldn’t have always done the opposite of what you wanted. Seeing you like this, I suddenly realize that many things are not as easy as I imagined. Once a decision is made, it’s too late for anyone’s regret. When I saw you lying on the bed, I realized for the first time that you can be this vulnerable, that there could be a time when you fall ill and can’t move in the hospital. That was when I truly understood that my love for you has been far too little. I never accompanied you to the hospital for a check-up nor made you comfortable. But now I understand, I should spend every day with you, because being with one’s child is the greatest happiness. Haven’t you always wanted to be with the girl you love? Your mother has always opposed it, but if you wake up now, I will definitely approve of you two being together because I don’t want to lose you, my precious son. Can you forgive me? Let me make up for the past decade of neglect. I want to watch you eat every day; I want to see you grow stronger day by day; I want to see you become healthier day by day. That for me as a mother would be the greatest comfort. I never imagined that you would go through this with your father, even wondering why we have to argue every night. Through all these events, I’ve finally understood—nothing is more important than you. I just hope you can live well. Do you know how delighted I was when you chose to acknowledge me as your mother? I waited for over a decade to hear a sincere acknowledgement from you. But it came too late. Just when we began to bond, this happened to you. Child, come back safely! As long as you can return safely, I’m willing to do anything you ask. Whatever decision you make when you return, I will support you unconditionally. As long as you return safely, even if it means my death, I wouldn’t mind... if only you could return safely...”

No one expected her to utter such heart-wrenching words. In everyone’s understanding, Xia Jing cared only about her own interests, never considering how her actions might harm others. But this time, Xia Jing seemed considerate of others’ feelings. This change was attributed to her son’s illness, leading her to this decision. Had it been someone else, would Xia Jing have spoken the same way?

Perhaps Zhang Yichen heard what Xia Jing said, because his fingers moved once more.

Even the doctor was stunned. No one expected that a man so close to becoming a vegetable could move his fingers again. Was he truly about to awake? This would be a tremendous miracle in clinical history, as no one wakes up from such a condition so effortlessly. Yet today, he witnessed the greatest miracle in his clinical career.

After the doctor conducted another comprehensive examination on Zhang Yichen, he finally reached a conclusion—that Zhang Yichen had chosen to remain in a perpetual slumber.

”Doctor, you just saw it, his finger really moved. So, is it possible for him to actually wake up now? Is there a possibility that he could regain consciousness?” Lei Jian asked.

”After assessment by several experts, we’ve determined that this is not a sign of him choosing to wake up. Instead, it signifies that he is about to fall into a deeper sleep. He has completely closed off his inner self; he doesn’t want to wake up and face the harsh reality of these events. He wants to continue sleeping because he feels that in his inner world, he won’t be saddened by anything!”

”At the same time, I urge you, his family, to prepare yourselves psychologically for the possibility that he may never wake up again. However, all his vital signs are normal, but he lacks autonomous breathing!”

After saying this, the doctor turned and left the ICU intensive care unit, leaving the family members of Zhang Yichen waiting inside the ICU. They, all of them, couldn’t bring themselves to believe that this was the reality they were about to face, yet they had no choice but to accept it.
