My Alleged Husband

Chapter 316: Chapter 296 Car Accident_1

Three months later, Zhang Yichen was getting ready to go to the United States for a business deal, but on his way there, he suffered a severe car accident.

In his office, he had packed all his personal belongings, and while driving to the airport, because of speeding combined with the many sharp turns on the road, he accidentally plunged off a cliff.

When Old Master Zhang received a call from the hospital, he heard the doctor tell him that his grandson had been in a car accident, and he fainted at once. He couldn’t accept that it was true; after all, this was the Zhang Family’s only bloodline.

Old Master Zhang quickly notified Zhang Zhentian and Xia Jing, and when the three of them arrived at the hospital together, Zhang Yichen had already come out of surgery.

”Hello, doctor, I’m a relative of Zhang Yichen. I’d like to ask, how is my grandson doing?”

”I’m sorry, there are some things I must tell you. After being brought to the hospital and as we performed surgery, we also conducted a full-body examination. We discovered that he has rib contusions and his arm is fractured—actually, it’s a comminuted fracture. In the future, it may be possible that he won’t be able to hold anything with that hand. Moreover, he’s still not out of danger. If he doesn’t regain consciousness within forty-eight hours, he could potentially become vegetative. I must confirm with you, his family, whether the patient was under severe emotional distress before the accident? It’s indisputable that speeding on a road with continuous sharp turns is already against the law, and we found a blood clot in his brain, which may be due to a previous injury that was never fully addressed. So this time while driving on the highway, he might have been somewhat disoriented, which led to him accidentally plunging off the cliff. However, the ultimate reason is likely that he was under severe emotional stress...”

”How could this happen? When can he wake up?” asked Xia Jing.

”That’s hard to say. It all depends on the patient’s willpower. If he wants to wake up within forty-eight hours, then he certainly can. If he doesn’t want to, he might become vegetative for the rest of his life, with no chance of awakening. I hope you, his family, can prepare yourselves mentally!” The doctor shook his head, sighed, and replied to Xia Jing.

Zhang Zhentian, Old Master Zhang, and Xia Jing could hardly believe this was true. Just yesterday, he was still a lively person, yet today he lay in this hospital room.

”Can we go and see him?”

”I’m sorry, but due to the patient’s extremely serious condition, we have moved him to the ICU, where no one is allowed to enter at will. If you really want to go in, you’ll have to wait a few hours!”

”Doctor, I beg you to save my son; I’m kneeling for you,” Xia Jing said to the doctor. In all her life, she had never knelt before anyone and had never pleaded so desperately. Today was the first time, and it was because her son had suffered serious injuries from a car accident. She no longer cared about her dignity or pride; she was only concerned with whether her son could regain consciousness. To her, nothing was more important than her son’s life.

”Please don’t do this. As doctors, we’ve done everything we possibly could, but whether he can wake up really has nothing to do with us. We are powerless and must leave it to fate. The patient’s recent emotions have been too severely affected, with erratic emotional fluctuations. Perhaps, once his emotions stabilize in his dreams, he can wake up. As for how long it will take for his emotions to stabilize, we just can’t be sure!”

The doctor finished speaking and left, leaving the three family members there, all of them thoroughly stunned.

Xia Jing was so anxious that she burst into tears. She said to Zhang Zhentian, ”This is all that woman’s fault. I really regret it now. Why didn’t I kill her when I had the chance? Leaving her alive in this world to harm my son—and look what’s happened now. Because of her, my son is in the ICU and might spend his life as a vegetative. Yet she’s out there, living freely. Such a woman deserves to be wiped from the face of the earth!”

”Stop it, both of you. What’s done is done. We should be praying to heaven now for Yichen to wake up. If my grandson doesn’t wake up, then I don’t want to live out the rest of my life. I raised him with my own hands; I know best what kind of person he is. I believe that heaven will not let such a kind-hearted child turn into a vegetable!”

Xia Jing didn’t want to talk to Old Master Zhang or Zhang Zhentian any longer, so she just ran out and found Ran Zhihan.

When Ran Zhihan saw Xia Jing come looking for her, she was quite surprised. Xia Jing didn’t say a word and just slapped Ran Zhihan across the face.

”What are you doing? Why are you going crazy here?”

”How dare you say that? My son is lying in the hospital, fighting for his life, and it’s all because of you. He might spend the rest of his life in bed as a vegetable, and here you are living your life carefree. Don’t you feel any shame? He loved you so much, yet you hurt him so deeply. If it wasn’t for you, how could he possibly be lying in a hospital bed?”

”I don’t understand what you’re talking about. What does his car accident have to do with me?”

”How dare you say it’s got nothing to do with you? If it weren’t for your heartless abandonment that caused him so much emotional turmoil, if it weren’t for your insistence on opposing him time and time again, which broke his heart, he wouldn’t have driven off a cliff on his way to the United States for business. Do you know? The doctors found out it was because he was so emotionally distraught that he became disoriented and drove off the cliff—and those were all hairpin turns! Do you realize how dangerous that plunge was?”

”Are you saying it’s really because of me?”

”No matter what happened between you two, and regardless of the apologies I’ve already offered to you—I shouldn’t have done what I did to you before. But you shouldn’t have hurt my son like this. Do you know? He’s now lying in that hospital bed, unable to move a muscle, and his life might be ruined there. He’s still so young. How can you bear to hurt him like this? After today’s incident, I truly regret not making you disappear from this world. If you had disappeared, if you hadn’t met him, wouldn’t he have avoided this pain? Do you know? For a man, his dignity is of the utmost importance. Now lying there oblivious to everything, he has completely lost his self-respect, and the person responsible for robbing him of it is you—the girl he once loved the most. Your love for him, you don’t deserve it at all. If he manages to wake up, that would be for the best. But if he doesn’t, then you and your family better be prepared to pay for my son’s life!”

Ran Zhihan hadn’t expected that because of her, Zhang Yichen had ended up like this. She couldn’t help but reflect on her actions, wondering if she hadn’t been so resolute in breaking up with him, would things have turned out differently?
