My Alleged Husband

Chapter 319: Chapter 299: A Reaction_1

Whether it was Zhang Yichen reacting to Ran Zhihan’s voice or for some other reason, his hand suddenly moved, startling everyone present. Everyone hoped that Zhang Yichen would be safe and sound because he was their dearest family member—no one wants their loved ones to leave them; they all wish for their family to be by their side at all times, and they felt the same way.

”Doctor, doctor, come quickly, my grandson, he’s moving, does that mean he’s waking up? His fingers just moved...” Old Master Zhang, when he saw his grandson’s fingers twitch, became very excited. In everyone’s hearts, only Elder Zhang fervently wished for Zhang Yichen to awaken, as this was the grandson he had painstakingly raised. He couldn’t stand the thought of his many years of happiness coming to nothing, nor could he bear to see his beloved grandson lie motionless in a hospital bed—a grave blow for the Zhang Family.

The doctor, hearing Old Master Zhang’s impassioned shouts, hurried over to him. Upon arrival at the ICU, the doctor noticed there was indeed some reaction from the patient, whose fingers continued to move incessantly. Could this indicate that he might one day regain consciousness?

”As for that, I can’t be sure yet. Let me first examine him to see if his condition has worsened or if he is showing signs of awakening. Only by conducting further tests can we determine what his medical condition has become!”

Hearing the doctor’s words, people hastily cleared space for him. They wanted the doctor to treat the person they cared about, hoping for a desired outcome.

After half an hour, the doctor had completed all his examinations, and everyone held their breath. During that half hour, there had been no talk about the patient’s condition, and they were very worried. Now that the examination was finished, could they finally learn the results?

”Doctor, may I ask how my son’s condition is?” Xia Jing asked, unable to wait.

”Don’t be too optimistic yet. After a series of tests, we determined that the patient isn’t in a state of awakening. Instead, it’s possible his hand moved reflexively in response to hearing a certain call. I cannot be certain if he’s on the verge of regaining consciousness. If you want to know whether he’ll wake up, we must carry out further examinations. Only then can we comprehend how his condition has evolved...”

The group, once filled with hope, felt all their expectations dashed by the doctor’s words. They had so dearly hoped for their relative to wake up. Why, then, did it have to end like this? Were they to lose this loved one to a comatose state? They didn’t want Zhang Yichen to just lie in the hospital bed. They wished for their family member to be lively and active in front of their eyes. For them, nothing was more important than their loved ones. They could give up everything but not their family. Even if they had all the wealth in the world, what good was it if their loved ones weren’t by their side? Each person now realized that, no matter how much money one had or how much fame and success one achieved, if they were alone without family to share lifelong companionship, that person would be considered a failure, unable to secure even their family’s affection, gaining nothing but money that felt undeserved. Why then should they even desire such empty wealth?

”Doctor, but I just saw, my son’s hand moved. Why do all these examinations tell me my son might not recover normally? Please, help, save my son. Have mercy on a mother’s heart. If something happens to my son, how will I go on living? I’ve already failed to provide him a mother’s love for over a decade; if I continue to fail him, how will I face our ancestors?”

”Don’t be too pessimistic now. I merely stated that it’s not confirmed that he will awaken. Everyone has a certain chance of regaining consciousness. His coma has merely deepened, which doesn’t mean he’ll spend his entire life lying in that bed. Perhaps this is good for him. He’s been through a lot of turmoil and can’t take any more injury. Maybe his current state is the best for him, sparing him the deepest internal pain and the recollection of hurtful things. Why wouldn’t this provide him some relief? Often, it isn’t the doctors who can decide everything. What we can do is try to heal their physical wounds since the trauma inflicted on their souls can only be healed by themselves. I can’t be sure of what he’s experienced over the years, but I know that he must not have been happy. Each time you’ve brought him pain, it’s been enormous. Repeated injury has led to his current severe trauma, and unable to bear the blows, he chose to fall into slumber, which seems, for him, a suitable outcome. Everyone chooses a different path, and the results vary accordingly. Now that he has made his choice, we as doctors are powerless, except to do our utmost to prevent him from becoming a vegetable. When he decides to wake up, that’s up to him. We truly have no other way!”

”I don’t believe it, I don’t believe my son doesn’t want to wake up. Doctor, please, do whatever you can to save my son. Don’t let him remain in this sleep. If he spends his whole life like this, what will become of our family? He is the sole heir of our home!” Zhentian also spoke up, indeed not believing his son would lie in a hospital bed for life, unable to move. In Zhentian’s heart, his son had always been the best, never defeated by anything. So why was his son only lying in the ICU now, his body riddled with tubes and dependent on a ventilator to breathe? This Zhang Yichen, in such a sorry state, was someone Zhentian had never seen before. In his mind, his son was always a clean, clear-headed kid who faced whatever came his way without bowing his head to any hardship.
