Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

A mistake was a mistake. There was no point trying to argue it away.

The flat-haired young man wasn’t the type who would refuse to take responsibility. Except for Ah Hui, he had already gone to apologize to everyone from the camping group one by one. Especially Rui Ming and the others who had been injured the worst—he had nearly knelt down while apologizing.

But Ah Hui was the one person he still hadn’t gone to see.

Because every time he gathered the courage to go apologize, the same scene from that night would inevitably surface in his mind.

Under the streetlights, Ah Hui holding the creature called Caterpie, walking farther and farther away from him and his sister.

”Why are you so obsessed with these monsters…?”

The young man couldn’t understand.

Even though he admitted he was wrong in the Caterpie incident, he could clearly feel that Ah Hui’s attitude toward these creatures was fundamentally different from the rest of them.

Weren’t monsters supposed to be humanity’s enemies?

And when he learned that Ah Hui planned to follow a man called ”Brother Mo” into the wilderness to find the Butterfree swarm and apologize—

He was even more confused.

So some time ago, the young man—who had never cared about livestreams—finally started watching the Pokémon science livestream with his sister Xiaocai.

It was the most unusual livestream on the entire internet.

It was even recommended by the government.

Honestly, it sounded ridiculous.

The moment he entered the stream, he saw viewers calling monsters ”Pokémon” and happily discussing what kinds of Pokémon Ah Hui might encounter during the journey.

Monsters—those terrifying creatures.

How could they possibly be called Pokémon?

Did these people even know how dangerous monsters were?

However…

Then Absol appeared.

Everything that Pokémon did almost completely shattered the young man’s long-held beliefs.

A creature bearing the name ”Disaster Pokémon,” emerging from the mountains not to harm people—

But to warn humans of an incoming disaster.

At first, the young man refused to believe it.

But when he saw Absol use Hyper Beam to save the people in that car, and even risk fighting the Onix inside the tunnel just to force it away—

He fell silent.

His deeply rooted belief—that monsters were savage beings who could never coexist with humans—began slowly collapsing.

Some monsters…

didn’t seem as bad as he had imagined.

Then came Lavender Town.

When the young man saw the Banette that went berserk to protect Xiao You—

By then he had already watched several streams.

And once again, he fell silent.

He didn’t even have a girlfriend.

But he did have a younger sister.

If he ever discovered that his sister had been bullied at school like that…

He felt that he might have done something even worse than Banette.

Watching Xiao You and Banette embrace in the rain, the young man felt countless emotions stirring inside him.

It was precisely because of the stories of Absol and Banette that the young man—and many new viewers drawn in by official promotion—began to change their opinions about monsters.

Without realizing it,

they had begun calling them Pokémon just like the older viewers did.

Lying on his bed and staring at the ceiling, the young man replayed scenes from the streams in his mind.

He also remembered Ah Hui’s eyes—

which seemed to shine with excitement whenever a new Pokémon appeared.

”Pokémon…”

Closing his eyes,

images of the Pokémon he had seen in the streams surfaced one by one.

For the first time, the young man felt that maybe—

just maybe—

he finally understood why Ah Hui cared about Pokémon so much.

After a long while, half asleep, he suddenly opened his eyes.

He grabbed his phone.

00:07 AM

”Crap—I overslept!”

He jumped out of bed and rushed back to his computer, quickly opening a bookmarked website.

A Pidgey holding an envelope in its beak appeared as the background image.

Following the instructions, he entered the package transfer order page and quickly filled out the address and details.

Submit.

A notification window popped up.

[Order Successful!]

He finally let out a long breath.

Although he had already learned about many Pokémon from Chen Mo’s streams—and even memorized dozens just to pass the entry requirements for the ”Pokémon Cabin” group—

In real life, he had encountered very few.

Only:

CaterpieButterfreePichuPidgeotto

And he was also aware that Feng Lan had recently adopted a Pidgey flock and started a service called Pidgey Express.

This was his chance.

He wanted to see Pokémon up close again.

He checked the delivery address once more before closing the website.

On his desktop, the Pokémon Cabin chat group was still exploding with messages.

He glanced over.

[Guys this is insane. I played one more game and came back—Pidgey Express orders are gone! Over a thousand slots instantly taken?!]

[I told you. Even though Anping’s population dropped, people here are very accepting of Pokémon.]

[Especially Chen Mo’s fans. With that level of promotion, how could they not try it?]

[Exactly. Pokémon delivering packages is such a novelty.]

[Free service + government guarantee. Even non-fans want to try it.]

[HAHA I waited before midnight. Ordered easily~]

[I didn’t get one… unlucky.]

All slots gone in under ten minutes?

The young man was shocked.

It seemed he had just barely caught the last train.

If he had slept another minute or two, he would’ve ended up like the unlucky people in the chat.

He couldn’t help feeling lucky.

Was grabbing one of the last slots like this…

some kind of destiny?

The Next Morning

In a shop in central Anping City.

Under the guidance of several Pidgeotto, many Pidgey lined up neatly to receive the packages they would deliver.

”Seriously… why am I doing this kind of work?”

Ah Hui muttered while packing packages into special courier boxes, dressed in a blue-and-white uniform.

”Oh? Regretting it already?”

Feng Lan, also wearing the uniform with a high ponytail, raised an eyebrow playfully.

”You were the one who insisted on the bet yesterday.”

”You lost—so accept the result.”

”You’re not backing out, are you?”

”...”

Ah Hui sighed internally.

A few days ago, when chatting with Feng Lan about Pidgey Express, he somehow ended up making a bet about how long the orders would take to sell out.

He guessed one or two hours.

Instead—

They sold out in ten minutes.

And the punishment?

Helping here as free labor.

”But seriously,” Ah Hui asked,

”can Pidgey really deliver all these packages properly?”

”No problem.”

Feng Lan replied confidently.

Anping City wasn’t very large.

She had divided the Pidgey flock into several teams responsible for different areas.

Packages delivered by courier companies would first arrive at Feng Lan’s shop.

They would then be categorized by:

addresspackage typesizeweight

After re-numbering, each Pidgey would receive a delivery box and distribute packages accordingly.

Of course, Pidgey couldn’t read addresses like human couriers.

So recipients needed to cooperate.

They had to display a large numbered sign at their location.

Once a Pidgey saw its assigned number, it would immediately deliver the package.

”Sounds complicated…”

Ah Hui scratched his head.

”Really? I think it’s fun.”

Feng Lan smiled, handing a prepared box to a Pidgey and gently patting its fluffy head.

”First day at work—do your best!”

”Pidgey~”

The Pidgey affectionately rubbed its head against her hand.

Then it took off into the sky.

”Alright.”

Feng Lan turned around with a bright smile.

”Morning target: 300 orders.”

”If we finish early, lunch is on me.”

Ah Hui paused.

Then he smiled too.

”Deal!”

For a courier business, 300 morning deliveries and about 1000 per day wasn’t much.

But Feng Lan never intended to make money.

That was why the trial period was completely free.

For the government quietly supporting the project, profit didn’t matter either.

Their goal was simple:

Improve public perception of Pokémon.

Just as the two worked busily—

Feng Lan suddenly made a curious sound.

”Huh?”

”What’s wrong?” Ah Hui asked.

”This is interesting.”

She handed him a small package.

”Look at the address.”

”Address?”

Ah Hui glanced at it.

Then froze.

”…This is…”

Meanwhile, in another part of Anping City.

After seeing his sister off to school, the flat-haired young man rushed back into his room.

From under the bed he pulled out a cardboard sign.

On it was written:

7

He placed it on the balcony.

”This should be visible, right?”

Then he hesitated.

”What if one sign is too small?”

So he made several more bright-colored number boards and lined them up across the balcony.

”Perfect.”

He nodded in satisfaction.

What he didn’t know was—

Bird Pokémon like Pidgey could easily spot such targets from hundreds of meters in the air.

At that moment his phone buzzed.

He checked it.

[Your order is now out for delivery. Click here to track.]

”So fast?”

He opened the tracking page.

A city map appeared.

A blinking red dot was moving rapidly toward his neighborhood.

”Wow… that’s quick.”

Ten minutes later, the dot circled briefly—

then arrived at the villa district.

Looking up—

he saw a small black dot flying toward him.

”Pidgey!”

With a crisp chirp, a Pidgey landed on his balcony, carrying a delivery box several times larger than itself.

”So this is Pidgey…”

The young man watched curiously.

He unzipped the box under the bird’s gaze and found the package labeled No. 7.

”Thanks, Pidgey.”

The official website had warned users not to feed the birds, so he could only thank it verbally.

Just as he was about to close the box—

Pidgey suddenly stuck its head inside.

After rummaging around, it pulled out an envelope labeled No. 7.

”Pidgey!”

”This… is for me?”

Though he couldn’t understand the bird’s words, he recognized the number.

He took the envelope and helped zip the box closed again.

Having finished its task, Pidgey flapped its wings and flew off toward the sky to deliver the next package.

Watching it leave, the young man opened the letter.

Inside was a single sentence:

”How have you been? Got time lately? Want to grab a meal together? My treat.”

Ah Hui.
