Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

Brother Yi was always efficient. He quickly brought over the camera and started the livestream.

Even though it was the middle of the night, quite a number of viewers flooded into the stream right away.

[This is what you call a surprise! I just finished a match of GOGO and was about to scroll for a bit before bed—didn’t expect you to go live, Mo-baby!]

[Whoa. Mo-baby, Brother Hui, and Brother Yi carrying the camera—what are you three doing sitting around a campfire at this hour instead of sleeping?]

[It’s this late and you’re still awake? Whose generals are you, to outlast even me?!]

[To be fair, the last late-night stream was at Redleaf Lake, when Pidgey got injured. With Mo-baby’s personality, he doesn’t usually stream this late unless something important happened. So…]

[Key detail detected!]

Chen Mo glanced at the scrolling comments and smiled.

The viewers in his livestream really did understand him well.

”You guessed right. Something did happen on our end.”

He briefly explained the situation and shared his suspicions.

Most of the people watching at this hour were loyal fans, so they were already familiar with Haunter. As the comments flew by, they even helpfully filled in the background for a few confused newcomers.

”Brother Mo, what should we do now?” Ah Hui asked softly from the side.

Chen Mo understood what he meant.

Haunter was a Ghost-type Pokémon. If it truly wanted to hide from them, there wasn’t much Chen Mo could do.

But—

You’re watching us right now, aren’t you, Haunter?

Chen Mo scanned the silent forest around them, cleared his throat lightly, and then raised his voice.

”Haunter, I thought you were a good ghost. Back in Lavender Town, I really enjoyed the time we spent together. But I didn’t expect you to do something like this.”

”Not only did you deliberately trap us in nightmares, you even devoured our dreams. That’s not just an ordinary prank anymore—that’s something only a bad Pokémon would do!”

”To be honest with you, I—and Ah Hui and the others—we’re all very angry right now.”

”Heh. I thought we were friends. But now it seems like you never considered us friends at all, did you?!”

Hearing Chen Mo’s stern rebuke, Ah Hui hesitated, but ultimately held back.

He would leave this entirely in Brother Mo’s hands.

Just then—

Ah Hui suddenly noticed Chen Mo’s shadow, cast by the campfire, shifting strangely from side to side. A purple-black head slowly emerged from within the shadow.

Chen Mo, who had been using his Aura the entire time to monitor their surroundings, had naturally noticed as well.

Still, he hadn’t expected Haunter to be hiding inside his own shadow.

”So you’re finally willing to come out, Haunter.”

Chen Mo turned to face the purple-black figure.

At this moment, the grievance on Haunter’s face was even more pitiful than when they first met. It looked at Chen Mo with watery eyes full of sorrow and resentment.

”...”

Uh. Maybe that was a bit too harsh.

But the livestream audience didn’t dwell on that. The moment Haunter appeared, the comments exploded.

[No way! It really is Haunter!]

[Although… every time I see Haunter looking so aggrieved, I can’t help but think it’s kinda cute.]

[Cute, sure—but this time it really crossed the line. Devouring dreams and scaring people awake isn’t just a harmless prank.]

[Wait! Is it possible Haunter got misunderstood again? What if the group nightmares weren’t its doing?]

[I’m more curious how Mo-baby was so sure Haunter had been following them. Just causing nightmares alone doesn’t necessarily point to Haunter specifically, right?]

Chen Mo obviously couldn’t keep up with every comment in real time. Sometimes Ah Hui would pick up his phone and act as a spokesperson for the chat, relaying their questions.

”Brother Mo, were our dreams really eaten by Haunter?”

Truth be told, Ah Hui had quite a good impression of Haunter—especially after learning what it had done to those two troublemaking boys in Lavender Town. His favorability had skyrocketed.

So even now, he was reluctant to believe Haunter had eaten his dream.

However—

Before Chen Mo could respond, Haunter, having heard Ah Hui’s question, suddenly showed an embarrassed expression. Like a primary school student admitting a mistake, it lowered its head and shyly raised one small purple-black claw.

”Ko-jie… ko-jie…”

Then Haunter looked at Chen Mo again with a pitiful gaze.

”Ko-jie! Ko-jie ko-jie!”

Unable to understand Haunter’s speech at all, Ah Hui—and the viewers—could only look to Chen Mo for translation.

But at that moment, something suddenly occurred to Ah Hui.

The last time they communicated with Haunter, Brother Mo had mostly relied on Pichu to translate. And Pichu wasn’t here right now—so how could Brother Mo understand Haunter?

As that thought flashed through his mind, another realization struck him.

Right—

Where was Pichu? Everyone else had woken up from nightmares. Why hadn’t Pichu come out with Brother Mo?

”Brother Mo, um… is Pichu still sleeping?”

”Yeah. Sleeping normally.”

Chen Mo glanced at Ah Hui, then slowly explained to the camera.

”A lot of strange things have happened with Pichu these past few days. Many viewers were confused, and I received quite a few private messages. Honestly, I was full of question marks too at first. It wasn’t until Pichu described its dreams to me—and combined with tonight’s collective nightmare—that I gradually narrowed my suspicion to Haunter.”

”That’s right. During this period, aside from me and Pidgeotto training Pichu, it also had a special dream coach—Haunter. It was precisely because of Haunter’s devoted help that Pichu was able to secretly learn Electabuzz’s Thunder Punch so smoothly.”

”As for why we all had nightmares tonight, Haunter was just complaining to me about it. Training Pichu consumed a tremendous amount of its energy. Starved to the extreme, it had no choice but to devour dreams to replenish itself.”

”As for why it didn’t devour Pichu’s dreams… well, would a father who painstakingly raised his child really have the heart to hurt them?”

After personally cultivating Pichu for so long and pouring so much effort into it, Haunter truly couldn’t bring itself to harm Pichu.

”Ko-jie… ko-jie…”

Faced with Chen Mo’s understanding, Haunter grew so emotional that tears began streaming down its face.

This human…

Just as Pichu’s memories suggested—

was truly a good person.
