Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

Faced with Professor Zhou’s question, scenes from earlier in Anping City flashed through Chen Mo’s mind one by one.

”Yes… it’s beyond what I imagined.”

Chen Mo spoke sincerely.

Anyone with clear eyes could see it—the authorities were truly putting their heart into building Anping City.

Professor Zhou smiled slightly.

”If you have any suggestions for Anping City’s development, feel free to bring them up. If they’re reasonable, we’ll consider adopting them.”

Hearing this, Chen Mo immediately waved his hands.

He had a very clear understanding of his own abilities. Knowing a little more about Pokémon than others didn’t mean he should casually get involved in something as complex as building a new kind of city.

In many matters, the worst thing that could happen was an amateur suddenly interfering.

Just then, Chen Mo noticed something.

Although the facility in front of him was only a branch of the Response Bureau, the surrounding walls were extremely tall and stretched far into the distance, enclosing a vast section of woodland in the suburbs.

Seeing where Chen Mo was looking, Professor Zhou gave a mysterious smile.

”Come in and take a look first.”

”Alright.”

With Professor Zhou present, Chen Mo entered the bureau without any trouble.

Once through the gate, a forest path appeared before them. The environment looked peaceful and comfortable.

Chen Mo curiously observed his surroundings.

At that moment, a familiar creature clinging to a tree caught his eye.

A green, crescent-shaped form.

”Metapod!”

Chen Mo murmured the Pokémon’s name.

It was the first Pokémon Chen Mo had ever introduced after arriving in this world. And because of Ah Hui’s Caterpie, it felt especially familiar.

But…

”Why is Metapod here…?”

Before Chen Mo could finish wondering, a nearby bush rustled.

A Nidoran♀ slowly walked out, glanced briefly at Chen Mo and Professor Zhou on the path, then calmly passed them and disappeared back into the woods.

”This…”

”Surprised?” Professor Zhou asked with a grin.

”But don’t rush. There’s something else you should see first.”

Soon the two of them finished walking through the forest path.

Ahead, a large flower field gradually came into view.

Above the flowers hovered a group of Pokémon Chen Mo knew very well.

”Combee…”

Chen Mo softly spoke their name.

At the same time, several Combee near the edge of the flower field noticed the humans.

The next moment—

One of the Combee suddenly showed a look of great excitement on all three faces.

It quickly called its companions.

Soon, a swarm of Combee flew toward Chen Mo.

”Pika…”

Even Pikachu was stunned.

Then Pikachu noticed the leading Combee staring at it with a strange, uncertain look.

”Bzz—?”

Hearing the question, Pikachu jumped down from Chen Mo’s shoulder and answered happily.

”Pika! Pikapi~!”

After receiving confirmation, the Combee’s eyes lit up. It rushed forward and began rubbing affectionately against Pikachu.

Seeing this familiar scene, Chen Mo immediately understood who they were.

”These are the same Combee you encountered during your second livestream in Hongjingpo Forest,” Professor Zhou explained with a smile.

Chen Mo asked, puzzled:

”Why are they here?”

This time Professor Zhou didn’t keep him guessing.

”When we decided to make Anping City the first experimental city, I had an idea—to build a Pokémon ecological park.”

”As the Response Bureau, it wouldn’t be enough to just encourage the public to interact with Pokémon. We had to set an example ourselves.”

”So we sent teams into forests and other habitats and successfully brought back a number of Pokémon.”

”Combee happened to be one of the two species willing to relocate their entire colony to the ecological park.”

Professor Zhou chuckled.

”Interestingly, when we first encountered them, they were being harassed by several Beedrill. After helping them drive the Beedrill away, our team invited the Vespiquen to move here.”

”At first she refused.”

”But later someone in the team mentioned your name.”

”And that’s what finally convinced them.”

Chen Mo looked suspicious.

”Professor Zhou… you didn’t just make that last part up to make me happy, did you?”

”Hahaha, of course not.”

Professor Zhou looked at the Combee happily circling Chen Mo and Pikachu.

”Humans can’t all be compared the same way. For Pokémon, someone like you—who approaches them sincerely—naturally earns more trust than people like us who approach them with a mission.”

Chen Mo didn’t say anything.

After leaving the Combee flower field, Professor Zhou brought Chen Mo to the research center.

This was where the bureau’s researchers worked, though most buildings were still under construction since the branch had only recently been established.

Following Professor Zhou inside, Chen Mo—along with Absol and Pikachu—quickly became the focus of many researchers in white coats.

They looked at them as if observing rare animals.

”No need to worry,” Professor Zhou explained.

”They’ve watched your livestreams many times, but this is their first time seeing Pikachu and Absol in person.”

Because of the ecological park, many researchers had recently shifted toward studying Pokémon behavior and daily life.

And since Pikachu and Absol weren’t present in the park—and were rare even in the wild—they attracted a lot of attention.

Just then someone called from outside the office.

”Professor Zhou, the bugs in the program from last night have been fixed. You can try the test device now.”

”Alright, I’ll test it right away!”

Professor Zhou stopped chatting and responded loudly.

Then he pulled out a smartphone from his desk.

But just as he was about to use it, he paused and slapped his forehead lightly.

”Look at me—forgetting something obvious. Since Xiao Mo is here, why not let him do the test?”

”Huh?”

Chen Mo looked completely confused.

Test what?

Without explaining much, Professor Zhou unlocked the phone and placed it in front of Chen Mo.

The screen looked simple.

There were no extra apps—only one icon in the center.

”Pokémon Encyclopedia”

Its icon was a small Pikachu.

”This is…!?”

Chen Mo looked up.

Professor Zhou smiled.

”This is one of the things I mentioned on the phone yesterday.”

Before Chen Mo left for Evergreen Forest, he had compiled a simple Pokémon encyclopedia and sent it to Professor Zhou.

Originally it was just a rough document meant to help explain Pokémon to the authorities.

Chen Mo never expected it would be turned into an actual application.

According to Professor Zhou, the app could:

Browse Pokémon recorded in the encyclopediaUse the phone camera to identify Pokémon through photosDisplay names and basic information instantly

”Want to try?” Professor Zhou suggested.

Chen Mo nodded.

”Pikachu, let’s test it.”

Pikachu obediently jumped to the floor and looked up at the camera.

Chen Mo snapped a photo.

The system began scanning.

Within seconds a new page appeared, followed by a mechanical voice:

”Pikachu — Mouse Pokémon. Electric-type.

Evolves from Pichu.

It has small electric sacs in its cheeks that discharge electricity when threatened.

When Pikachu raises its tail, it can sense movements around it. Pulling its tail may result in a bite.”

More detailed information could be viewed on the page below.

”Amazing…”

Chen Mo murmured.

In the original Pokémon anime, trainers also had a Pokédex that automatically identified Pokémon.

Aside from requiring manual photos, this app functioned almost exactly the same.

Chen Mo couldn’t resist trying again.

He pointed the camera at Absol.

”Absol — Dark-type Pokémon.

The horn on its head senses changes in the sky and earth, giving it the ability to predict disasters.

Absol is friendly toward humans and often appears before disasters to warn them.”

The page also included its nickname—”Disaster Pokémon.”

And below that was a short story about Chen Mo’s encounter with Absol near the tunnel on the way to Evergreen Forest.

Chen Mo suddenly realized something.

The encyclopedia he had given earlier didn’t include these details.

Meaning—

The Response Bureau had expanded the entries themselves.

Sure enough, when Chen Mo scanned Haunter, detailed information appeared as well.

”Xiao Mo,” Professor Zhou said gently.

”Updating the encyclopedia is a small matter for us.”

”We have plenty of time to organize and expand on the Pokémon information you share during livestreams.”

”But if you encounter Pokémon that haven’t appeared in your streams—ones only you discovered through your special ability—you might need to notify us.”

”Because soon…”

”We plan to release this app nationwide.”

Chen Mo froze.

”Nationwide?”

Professor Zhou nodded.

”The greatest source of fear people have toward Pokémon is the unknown.”

”Your livestreams help eliminate that unknown.”

”But distributing the Pokédex will accelerate that process.”

”This is currently one of the most important projects for the Response Bureau.”

”In the future we’ll not only release the mobile app but also printed Pokédex books, so even elderly people who don’t use smartphones can learn about Pokémon.”

Professor Zhou continued speaking enthusiastically about future plans.

But Chen Mo’s attention drifted.

Scenes from the day replayed in his mind.

First—

The development of Anping City, which already exceeded his expectations.

Then—

The ecological park and Professor Zhou’s determination to lead by example.

And finally—

This Pokédex project.

Looking at the silver-haired old man passionately describing the future, Chen Mo felt as if there was light shining in his eyes.

Hu Chengliang’s words echoed in his mind again.

”Peaceful coexistence between humans and Pokémon isn’t something you have to carry alone anymore.”

Chen Mo slowly closed his eyes.

This trip had been meant to judge the government’s true attitude.

And now—

The small details he had witnessed were already enough to answer his doubts.

It was time.

Time to move forward with his next step.
